Hog Dog Fighting Under Federal & State Crackdown

Monday, December 20, 2004

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) reports that Federal and State authorities are executing arrest warrants in South Carolina, Alabama, Arizona, and Georgia in relation to organized hog dog fighting. The operation began last Saturday (Dec 18). The HSUS is working with the USDA and state and county law enforcement officials.

Hog dog fighting, also known as "hog catch trials" or "hog dog rodeos" is where a fighting dog is put into a pen with a pig, with the dog usually tearing the pig apart. Crowds cheer as they watch dogs tear off the ears, tails, snouts, and groins of squealing pigs. Hog dog events are often billed as "family entertainment", with mothers and children in attendance.

The HSUS and state and federal law enforcement authorities have learned that hog dog fights are regularly organized in at least 10 states nationwide and its presence is apparently growing. States known to have hog dog fighting activity include Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Texas.

Earlier this year, NBC affiliate WPMI-TV in Mobile, Alabama, exposed the horrors of hog dog fighting through an undercover investigation. That videotape spread throughout the South and led to an arrest and conviction of the hog dog event's operator on animal cruelty charges. Shortly after WPMI broke the hog dog fighting story, Louisiana Rep. Warren Triche introduced a bill to ban hog dog fighting in his state which passed and has since been signed into law.

More information on hog dog fighting including streaming video, is found on The HSUS' web site at www.hsus.org.

  • You guys are a bunch of freedom killers and are too stupid to realize it. This is a part of our history as a diverse group of people. Leave it alone! I just hope something terrible doesn't have to happen before you people realize we want to be left alone. There are others more passionate than I who will not give up these rights without a fight.

  • It seems the South didn't learn any civility from the first beating they took. Perhaps the North needs to remind them again.

Torturing animals is what they call a tradition. They're so proud of their dogs because they can tear apart a defenseless hog. They cut off its tusks! I guess they's afwaid the big piggie gonna beat up their puppie

Nothing but a bunch of backwood inbreds. They are an embarrassment to the rest of the United States, and the civilized world

  • You can judge a society by the way they treat their animals.
The South remains to be judged - again.

Torturing animals and gamefights for the amusement of so-called enlightened southerners only highlights problems that are going on down there.

I cant belive they take their kids to see a dog tear up a terrorized defenseless hog. What kind of people are they? Whats going on down there?
Animals have rights to dignity and protection, now it needs to be specificially from southerners.

    What a bunch of hicks.

  • You guys ought to get your facts straight on what really happens at these events. i have partcipated in hog trials for ten years and never seen a single hog killed or ear ripped off. so attend one of these events.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 7:56 PM, July 11, 2005

  • I did attend one. I went to Double P Catch Pen in AL. Two hogs died that night from their injuries and a dog had his chest cut open by a hog.

  • Hog Dog fighting is WRONG. I'm am only 15 years old on the news i just watched footage of this so called event and i cried! People who this is are HORRIABLE and stupid. This Hog Dog stuff isnt a form a freedom. It a form of curlty towards animals. Its horriable and wrong. it is not training the dogs for hunting. Tell me when the hell u EVER hunt a pig that is trap IN A CAGE all defenseless?? NEVER!! For all you people out there who this is such a "great" idea. I would like to trap YOU in a cage and have a I dont tiger Bite at you while your defenseless. This is WRONG!!! This is not the last i will be putting up But right now i'm JUST SICK u people make me soo sick

  • I am speechless after witnessing t.v. footage of the torture of defenseless animals brought on upon so-called human beings. To think these losers actually pay to amuse themselves by watching and hearing the cries of an animal being ripped apart makes me more than sick - it tears at my soul. I personally would pay to see those same people put in a cage and torn to shreads by these hogs. Maybe your kids could watch, too.

  • How are animal rights activists freedom killers? Whose freedom are we threatening?
This is a part of our history as a diverse group of people. Leave it alone!
oh yeah, real smart. I'd like to see someone use that line while talking about the enslavement of poor people, Africans, Indians, and just about everybody in the world.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 2:11 PM, December 01, 2005

  • Obviously, the people that attend these fights have NO REGARD FOR ANIMAL WELFARE. These hogs are frightened to say the least, and I highly doubt that any dog that is injured is EVER taken to a veterinarian to be sutured or given medical treatment. How is that not suffering?? Both animals are at our mercy and we should NEVER teach our children to laugh or enjoy such cruel, inhumane and low acts, I dont care who you are or how much you think you know - IT IS WRONG.

  • After watching these hod/dog events on tv this week, I am still recovering. It really upset me.
These events need to be stopped.
If it means an organized trip south,so be it, count me in. These southerners need educating. They want to fight--perfect.

  • all right all you hog-doggin idiots. let me inform of you a little epidemic that is plaguing our country even right now as i type this. I watched a video clip of your sport today, and i noticed something, the only dog i saw were "pitbull's" , or sometype of bully breed participating in this sport. Im sure you all really love your pits, and im sure you get all pissed off when the government or media speaks of "banning" pitbulls, or dogs that resemble pitbulls, because of their "agressive nature" and "unpredictability" . I am a pitbull owner myself, and i love my dog. He is a part of the family and has never shown an ounce of aggression. And i have worked hard to get my neighbors and friends and relatives to accept my friend for being a good dog, not a vicious killer. The reason people think this way about the breed, and the same reason the breed is subject to so much breed specific legislation, is because stupid people like you use these dog's drive and determination to put on a show that you know pisses 99% of america off!!! Go ahead idiots, add a little more fuel to the fire....dummy. because of people like you, before you know it good people like myself and other responsible pitbull owners will have to euthanize our family members because some congressmans kid saw a clip of your fiasco on the evening news and got his feelings hurt.Just great. I could care less about the pigs, kill em for all i care. BUt let me contradict what you say... pit bulls are not hunting dogs. ARE NOT HUNTING DOGS! So dont say that your training them for hunting. Use a figgin hound dog for that crap, thats a hunting dog. I guess all im trying to say is its people like you dummys that give justification to local, city and state governments across the country to ban, confinscate, and euthanize our beloved bully breeds. Way to go, stupid.

    By Blogger bkjeffrey383, at 10:28 AM, December 07, 2005

  • Your assertion that pit bulls are not hunting dogs is not entirely accurate, kind sir. Pit bulls were originally bred for bullbaiting, basically latching on to a bull's nose to hold him in place while the butcher slaughtered them. They perform this very same function when hunting hogs. They are the catch dogs. While the bay dogs track the pig and corner it, the pit bull or am bulldog is sent in to hold it in place while the hunter either shoots or stabs it. And to the people who think these guys are worried about their dog taking on a full grown boar with tusks, it happens every day. These amazing dogs, some only 45lbs or less, will hold a 300-400lb hog with 6in tusks in place. Pretty damn impressive if you ask me.

  • it would be fun and exciting to see man against hog! many have been wrestling for years with their southern porkers(aka)wives! should be a walk in the park for the macho men! BTW: spectators can throw beer cans at the men (only) who are in the "pit"!

  • I am from the South and am sickened by this and any cruelty to animals. There is no book or passage in the Bible that says humans are to be cruel to animals in any way. I am disgusted and God will prevail. Anyone who is cruel to animals will be cruel to a child- this is not made up. so beware of anyone who is this way and please report any and all animal cruelty you see. be civil no matter where you are. Whatever your religion or belief -animal cruelty is WRONG!

  • To all of you who are calling us hog hunters stupid, i have a few things to say.My husband hunts and for one it's legal in our state, it's history. Our dogs are bread for hunting hogs, and they love every min. of it. My hunsband will only kill a hog, when we need meat. It made me sick to read that ya'll say were stupid, and nothings but imbreads. You come of our part and we'll say all you wannabees what it's like.
Another thing, you wannabees are saying NOTHING about killing bear, rabbit, bear, coon, sqirell, or no other kind of animal that uses dogs. We do use PIT BULLS and don't get me started on that subject, because none of our dogs, have EVER bite our kids but we have had other breeds bite and try to kill our kids, but there not making headlines now why is that? I'll tell you why because Ya'll HATE what the SOUTH has so go F**k off.

  • Well, to comment on the young ladies's before mine, the worl is "in bred not imbread. Pitting a dog to kill a farm animal while your children are watching is great fun. Maybe you could save money by asking your local mortitician to watch an autopsied body being embalmed. Great with hot dogs and catchup, and DO bring the children. Don't you feel the least bit WHITE TRASHY? Go back to school and bathe.

  • I read all the post and I am disgusted with alot of the Views and attitudes from people who think they have the right to regulate what people should consider as a pastime. When Dr. Richards or Judge Hartwell decides that they are going to take their Lab on a duck hunt or Pointer on a upland game bird hunt; every one looks at them as being polished and affluent. Even if you pricks don't hunt yourselves, you will put your self in the company of these affluent men. This sickens me. Its prejudice in it's purest form. So what a sub-culture does something a little different than we may do or chooses to have fun in ways we may not find acceptable, It's there right. Pitbulls have been used to hunt pigs for a very long time, Its what they are used for. Its what they are bloody good at. You wouldn't use a circular saw to to hammer a nail like you wouldn't use a hammer to saw a Piece of friggen wood. SO likewise you wouldn't use a Lab to hunt pigs, because that job is better suited for a pit bull or a dog of its type and skill. All this damn crying over animal cruelity is sickening. What about farmer Jons new born Calf that has been eaten by the damn wild pig, what about his crops that have been decimated by the wild hogs. You pricks sit there in your little affluent worlds and give your opinions about what shouldn't happen all the mean while you don't offer a solution. You jerks sicken me. AND I AM FROM THE NORTH, I DONT LIVE IN THE SOUTH. SO WHO GIVES YOU FRIGGEN IDIOTS THE RIGHT TO LOOK DOWN ON PEOPLE BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT LIKE US!!! YOU ALL ARE PATHETIC AND IGNORRANT.
If you don't like it, don't watch it point blank. ANd leave these people alone that have made this apart of there tradition.

  • PLEASE STOP THIS. WHAT I SAW ON T.V. HAS MADE ME SO SICK THAT I HAVE RESEARCHED THIS DOG HOGGIN CRUELTY AND HAVE COME TO THE CONCLUSION THAT THE WORLD IS GOING TO END BECAUSE PEOPLE HAVE LOST THE COMMON SENSE THE GOOD LORD GAVE US.WE DO NOT HAVE TO TREAT OUR FOOD CHAIN WITH THIS AWFUL CRUEL SICK CRAP.ANIMALS DIE SO WE CAN FILL OUR BELLIES. RESPECT THE ANIMALS. THEY KEEP THE MEAT EATERS ALIVE. I THINK WE SHOULD BECOME VEGETAIRIANS. I LOOK AT AN ANIMAL'S EYES AND THAT IS ENOUGH TO REALIZE THEY DESERVE TO LIVE TOO.

  • As always all the facts are left out. I have been to numerous "hog dog rodeos" I have never seen cut tusks nor have I seen dogs viciously tare apart any hogs. I have seen families spending time together, young teens not on the streets doing drugs and drinking alchol. Yes hogs and dogs get hurt and there has always been medical attention given to both. But as always to ones against it only show there side. I take my young dogs to the pens to train them. I'd rather have a controled enviroment so the chance of my dog getting hurt is lowered. How would you feel if your dog didn't hold that wild hog in the woods and it came after you? Or you put a young pup on a hog in the wild and it killed it because there were not enough people to help get it off? And calling a wild hog defenseless is like calling a lion a little kitten. I thought I lived in a "Free Country" it looks like my freedom is slowing being taken away. I am totally against dog fighting and what my dogs do is not fighting. If you take away our "hog dog rodeos" what will be next, fox hunts, coon hunts. I guess thats what you can expect from people who want God taken out of our lives too.

  • I am from the south and I hunt hogs with dogs. I have not been to a fight where they put them in a pin and let them go at it for money. We put them in a pin to trian the dogs that way we dont go into the woods worried what are dogs can do. If my dog cant hunt then he is just a pet I will not force them. But I have never had a hog get killed or have his ear pulled off in the pin. the hogs in the woods are not at all helpless they are mean and my catch dogs do go to the vet for everything and believe it or not he is a am bull and he has never been mean to a nother dog or my family, he loves kids, but when he sees a hog he goes crazy. But I am just pissed that people see some bad fights and try to act like the south is so bad, you know some of us love the woods some of us hate it. do not say that yall need to come fight us again because there are a lot of good people here and yes there are some bad. You guys from the north that run there mouth about how all of the south is bad yall no better than anyone else, we got anuff to worry about we dont need yall telling us what to do. you did not grow up here so you dont know you just hear the bad and go from there. I know yall have people who do bad shit to but you dont see me bad mouthing them we are only human we have to live with what we do so if you dont like it then dont watch it, this is how it was done in the past and some people like it.

  • I know that there are people that feel that hog dog trials are cruel. I wish to do a little educating here. we in the south are not like folks from the north or anywere else. i am southern born and southern bred. Folks in the south have and still do as in old times use dogs to put meat on the tables for there families. Pleas take a moment to understand that what we do is deep seeded into or heritage. I have never been to a hog catching event or do I approve of them but keep in mind that if someone isn't teaching dogs to caych hogs you may very well wake up one morning with one of these very aggressive feral hogs in your front yard. A recent report in Texas (my home state) estimated the feral hog population at six million. The only thing at this time that helps slow down the expantion of feral hogs is people who hunt these nuisance critters with dogs. I breed train and use dogs to find and catch these nuisance animals. You may ask yorself what am I doing to help stop this epidemic? I think a lott of good people are missing the big picture.

  • I am a life long hunter from Texas, and I hate all forms of hog dog training and hunting. Don't let the hog dog advocates fool you...it is a brutal "sport". It is conducted near me all the time and dogs and hogs are always injured. Being a field Vet is part of the sport. Hogs are mutilated long before being killed. Generally, yes, the kill is quick, but after something no animal should go through. I strive to exact quick kills and won't shoot otherwise. I do not purchase meat at the store and live off what we catch while fishing or harvest while hunting. Hog dog groups hide behind "helping out the land owner" but plain and simple, they enjoy the "sport". Most real hunters see this as not even part of hunting, but as a blood sport. Do some searches for pics of hog dog hunting, and you'll see they are feeding you all a line of crap when they say the hogs don't suffer. I am from a long line of traditional hunters that love nature beyond all else. Hog dog hunting flies in the face of that fully. Hogs have been here for hundreds of years, if they were going to eat us out of house and home, or kill our kids, we would have seen it long ago. Its an excuse to keep doing something they like to do. In Texas, traditional firearm hunting accounts for more control of hog numbers than do hog dog hunters. It is ineffective and disruptive to the native game as they hunt at night. Deer and livestock are commonly chased by the dogs. I could go on forever...the whole thing needs to be outlawed. And don't forget, this comes from a hunter that still gets upset when an animal dies - at my hand or not. I'm just from an area where you can still actually live off the land. Love it, yes, live with it, yes, as the Native Americans and many of our founding fathers did, but torture it, NO! It lacks all respect to the game we hunt and the outdoors these guys claim to love.

  • I would first like to say that I was born, raised, and now choose to live in Alabama. I was unaware of these terrible and cruel practices termed 'sports' until I heard of the recent allegations against Micheal Vick and his involvement in dog fighting. I was horrified at the videos shown on ESPN. Since seeing these videos, I have been researching these sorts of activities in hopes that I can find a way to help these neglected and abused animals. People that choose to participate in these activities are cruel and uneducated. Those that take their children to these 'events' are just plain dumb. It is unfair to assume that all Southerners participate in such terrible practices. My family has always had boxers as pets and member of the family and I have recently adopted a bulldog puppy. Just hearing of how people can treat their animals (any breed or species) almost brings me to tears. This is not a Southern problem, this is a problem that the United States as a whole needs to address and eliminate through education, harsher punishments, and stricter enforcement.

  • Look...I love how everybody likes to tell everybody else what to do. I don't let hogs I catch get mauled and I don't like to see them in misery. However, I don't like spineless idiots who say play the Southern race card either. I travel all over for my job, and I will tell you that the most backwoods/imbred people I have met come from the northeast. Hogbayings is a Southern thing, because hogs are in the south primarily. Just wait until they get to you neck of the woods to open you mouths....Cause this sport is moving across the nation..."Aint it Grand"

  • "Nothing but a bunch of backwood inbreds. They are an embarrassment to the rest of the United States, and the civilized world"

now, this paired with your inane and rather unamerican comment referencing the civil war makes you seem like quite the biggot.

hicks can be found anywhere. and hicks are generally characterized as "backwood" and maybe could POSSIBLY be "inbred." as a proud, educated, refined and cultured alabamian, i do not personally know or associate with such people. so lumping me and my entire region into a section of delinquents is not only enraging, but also erroneous.

as for your illustrious northeast region that is supposedly superior to its opponent in the civil war, the most backwards and uncivilized people i have ever met have been from new york and new jersey. don't flatter yourself into thinking because you reside above the mason dixon line that you are more "civilized." y'all have the same potential for trashiness and backwardness as anyone in the southeast does. so spare us the holier than thou act, you're not fooling anyone.

the real issue here is animal cruelty. so stop being so small minded as to assume it's a regional problem. there are sickos and backwards people everywhere.

  • All you yankees are a bunch of idiots. People use Dogs such as pit bulls and other such breeds to hunt wild hogs and have for years. These breeds are known as "catch dogs". Other breeds such as catahoula are know as "bay dogs", this means they track and corner the hogs. Hog dog fighting is used to train catch dogs. You dont just take an untrained dog out into the woods and let it loose on a 400lb wild hog. These dogs live to hunt and go after hogs. They love it. Yall need to get a little more educated yourself before yall start makeing coments on the subject. I know many well educated people who enjoy this sport. And if you dont think this is a sport why dont you take your ass into the woods with some dogs, run several miles with your dogs after a hog and when they catch it pull that 400lb hog out of the brush and try to tie it, stab it, or even shoot it.

And for the person who said "It seems the South didn't learn any civility from the first beating they took. Perhaps the North needs to remind them again." You can come on down south and ill show you a beating you ignorant s.o.b.

  • There’s nothing wrong with hunting or fishing. There’s nothing wrong with butchering an animal for food. That was god’s intensions. That’s how we survive. The issue here is not the cuts and bruises these animals receive during our selfish acts of entertainment. We cut and bruise ourselves all the time. The difference is that our hearts don’t beat at a million beats a minute. We don’t fear for our lives or ponder on whether or not we will be alive in five minutes. Our eyes don’t bulge out of our heads displaying the worst type of fear imaginable. It doesn’t matter if the pigs have one layer of skin or 138 layers. There is still nerve endings and pain. This issue has nothing to do with race or location. I live just north of the capital of Hicksville and am surrounded by neighbors who believe in this type of sport yet I am totally against it. With 10 acres of land and several small farm animals, I’ve never had to protect my animals from the constant wild pigs who cross my yard. A true hunter doesn’t let his future steak suffer in pain. He kills to kill instantly and to feed himself and his family. But what god respecting purpose do these fight have? Just like any other sport that shows lack of disrespect towards living things not just humans. That’s the problem these days. Yes we are superior to every other species and we abuse it. When we see things like boxing or violence on TV or animal cruelty such as this, we teach our children that when superior to something or someone, take advantage and abuse of it. This then leads to the violence and killings we see in our schools. The drugs and rebellion in most of our teens today. We see people putting kittens in grocery bags and throwing it in a canal. And I’m sure someone can come up with a decent excuse for that too. Don’t you see, this type of sport is like a gateway drug “per say,” to other acts of not only cruelty, but selfishness. Instead, we should be teaching our kids compassion towards anything that serves a purpose on the land we’ve borrowed. This sport should not be an outlet for boredom in small towns. Your in a small town for a reason. If you cant handle that then move. Animals shouldn’t suffer cause you don’t have a chuckie cheese. If everyone asked themselves how they would feel if it were themselves in every aspect and situations in our lives, you wouldn’t have as many child abusers and cheating spouses and so on. You and I are lucky our fate has lead us to lead our lives as humans. But what if your fate was to live your life as a pig? Would you have the same views? When we lead by simple acts of kindness, we teach others to respect those less fortunate . Doesn’t it feel good to help an old lady across the street? Why should it be any different towards animals? And let’s not talk about heritage and roots. Those days are gone. We can cure cancer, make babies in test tubes and communicate with out wires. Did your great great great great grandfather know pigs are smarter than any other domestic animal, dogs and cats included. They have amazing problem solving abilities and are very trainable animals. May god forgive those of you who think this is an acceptable behavior and influence. May he forgive you for sleeping soundly at night with no remorse for your actions.

  • For all of those people who think southern people are just abunch of "Hicks", that doesn't know anything, take another look. If all of your little grocery stores and resturants were to just up and close down one day and never open back up again. Who would die of starvation first? Yea, you people up north!!! I have been to several Hog dog baying contest in south georgia. Never once have i seen a hog get killed or much less a scratch from a dog. Over the years i have used dogs for hunting several different kinds of game, including hogs, never once have i treated these dogs with cruel ways or let them get hurt much less hurt another animal. Yes, my dogs may look mean but they would never harm a thing. They just do what they are trained to do. Track down other "game" animals, not to catch and kill. SO BACK OFF YOU DUMB YANKEES!!!!!

  • Let me begin by saying I have been hunting hogs with dogs for several years now and I find there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. It is just as much of a hunting sport as anything else. As for all of you whining about these hogs being tortured or mistreated, get real. Have you ever been within 10ft of a hog? Well, I have and let me tell ya, if it were not for my catch and bay dogs, I probably would have taken a few beatings by these beasts. I am not going to lie to you and say I do not enjoy hunting hogs with dogs, because I do. Just as I love every other type of hunting and fishing. Hogs are not like the cute little pig, Babe, that I'm sure you are all thinking of. They are wild animals and if you ever come across them, they are mean as hell. They destroy crops and land and they are a flat out nuisance. I will say that I do not believe in torturing any animal, and I can assure you that if hog doggin' is done the RIGHT way there is no animal that is being tortured. Yes, there are pens with hogs and there are dogs that go in these pens, some of the dogs will bay, and the others will catch. The dogs are protected wearing vests and collars for their safety. The hogs are bitten by the dogs, they are not torn to shreds for the entertainment of hearing them suffer. Putting the dogs in the pens with these hogs is a form of training for the dogs. Believe it or not, but here in the South, some farmers, ranchers, or landowners will pay people to eliminate the hog from their property. This is done by hog doggin'. The dogs love to hunt, they live for it. If any of you did as much research as you say have you would know all of this and this discussion would not even be going on. But, because there are close-minded people out there who just want to run their mouth about subjects they know nothing about, I felt the need to express my opinions upon the subject. I am not going to sit here and tell you that no where here in the south are hogs tortured for the entertainment of others, because I’m sure it is happening, and that’s a shame, because it makes all you think that is how hog doggin’ is done, and its NOT. But, before you go bitching about us inbred southerners, research the sport and the people who par-take in the sport. I am sure that they will be happy to take you on a hunt or show how real hog doggin’ is done, until then, SHUT YOUR MOUTH!
