Dog Runners Under Attack in Arkansas

Friday, January 07, 2005

Dog Running has become a popular sport in many places of the United States. It's where packs of dogs are used to run down and chase wild game, such as deer, squirrels, foxes, and others. It's the same as fox hunting in England. The problem is that other property owners are having enough of the noise, vandalism and trespassing caused by some dog runners.

The Arkansas Democrat Gazette reports that several hunters and property owners packed themselves into the Game and Fish Commission in Little Rock yesterday to address the matter. All agreed that authorities need to crack down on the trouble makers.
"But we're just out there to enjoy ourselves and have a good time" says one coyote hunter, who admits that some of his fellow dog runners are flouting the law.

"My enjoyment is running dogs," said another dog runner. "I could care less about killing a deer. You can take a look at my hunting record to tell that."
Trespassing is a big problem with dog running because when dogs chase after a fleeing animal they tend to overcome fences and other barriers.
"People who don't have access to big chunks of property ought not run dogs, says another dog runner. "If you've only got 3 acres to run on, run Chihuahuas."
Heck, if I had 3 acres here in Southern California, I'd get a golden retriever and let him run all he wants.
