According to a survey by the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association, 40 percent of dogs now sleep in a human bed, up from 34 percent in 1998.The article goes on to explain that the practice of having pets sleep with us goes back to Early Man, when they used to dogs as alarm systems:
"It's something that goes back to caveman days," says Christi Ahmen, of Green Bay, Wis., who works with her dogs in shows and obedience trials. "If I'm sleeping something may happen, and with your dog in bed with you there's one more set of eyes and ears on alert. There might be a fire or someone might jiggle a door handle. The dogs are a good alarm system. It goes back to being safe and secure."But obviously, these days we don't have to worry about approaching bears or a tribe of invading cavemen. My dad and step-mother sleep with their three dachsunds. I think it's more of a love affair. For the dogs, it's more of a pack thing.
When my girlfriend's gone our dogs definitely sleep on the bed with me. And sometimes when she's here too - but with the both of us, and 130 lbs of pitbull (2 dogs, 68 and 67 lbs respectively) it's not so comfortable on our queen sized bed...
nothing makes me fall asleep faster than listening to their relaxed, gentle breathing while they doze...

When I wake up in the morning, my little 10lb pooch is splayed out horizontally across the bed and I am hanging over the edge! But I couldn't sleep without her near me.
It's unconditional love on both sides!

My 75 lb. husky has his own bed that has never been used! It's starting to look more and more comfortable to my boyfriend, when he comes to bed and there's no room left for him.

My dogs are my ears and eyes when I am asleep. Once I am sleeping I can't even hear the phone ring.... But once they (3 Pit Bulls) bark I am wide awake.... I live in sin city where anything can happen.... I have a bed(s) for them, never used..... When ever a girlfriend comes over to stay a couple of days they usually say it's them or me, well I luv one night stands..... Shorty from Las Vegas

I started letting my pooch on the bed when she was six weeks old so that I could get her outside when needed. Now I can't sleep unless she is on the bed. She is a great snuggler!!

I HAVE TWO PRECIOUS BABIES,MAX,A LHASA APSO 3YRS OLD AND PAXTON ROSE A LHASA MIX 1YR OLD. WE STARTED SLEEPING WITH MAX WHEN WE BROUGHT HIM HOME AND HE HAS BEEN THERE EVER SINCE. BUT WHEN WE GOT PAXTON ROSE AND SHE TOO ENDED UP IN BED WITH US, MY HUSBAND DECIDED THAT IT WAS ALITTLE BIT TO CROWDED AND MOVE TO ANOTHER BEDROOM. THE JOKE WAS ON HIM THOUGH BOTH OF OUR BABIES FOLLOWED HIM TO HIS BEDROOM AND SLEEP WITH HIM MORE THAN ME.

We have three dogs and sometimes our cat that sleep with us. An 11 pound Chihuahua, An 27 pound Sheltie, and a 7 pound Yorkie and Meescha our 7 pound cat. I've told my husband good thing we have a KING sized bed. As you can tell they are very spoiled and we absolutely LOVE them.
