Pit Bull Ban in Ontario Getting Slammed

Monday, January 24, 2005

The CBC News reports that opponents of the Pit Bull ban in Ontario spoke to legislators today complaining that the ban on pit bulls amounts to "ethnic cleansing" for dogs.
Cathy Prothro, president of the American Staffordshire Terrier Club of Canada, told a legislative committee that the proposed law unfairly blames pit bulls for attacks against humans by all breeds of dogs.

"For this type of racial profiling, it amounts to nothing more than canine ethnic cleansing," she told the committee on its first day of hearings.

Prothro also said there is "no scientific proof that genetics cause a breed of dog to be aggressive."
Several Canadian cities, including those in Ontario, make it totally illegal to own pit bulls. Earlier we reported that the City of Windsor, required owners to surrender their pit bulls to animal control for destruction. Ontario is now considering legislation to make it illegal to own pit bulls across the entire Province. However, it allows existing owners of pit bulls to keep their animals.

  • A massive pit bull attacked my 20 pound Shelty in my back yard this morning. I kicked the hell out of him and grabbed my dog, then the pit bull lunged at me and I sent him flying with a hArd kick to the mouth. I got my little dog inside and grabbed my rifle to kill that bastard but he was gone when I got back outside. My little dog will be alright the vet said. In my opinion, only rednecks and cowards own these beasts as they're not good for anything but to kill. I told every cowboy on this ranch this morning, that if they see a pit bull on this property, "KILL THE BASTARD WHERE IT STANDS"

  • To: Sheltie owner. Sound a bit like a redneck yourself, and I wonder why someone would call a stranger a coward, yet signs his mail anonymously?

How many of your rancher buddies are going to kill innocent dogs because OOPS!, looked like a pit bull to me...

I hope that if you do kill an animal, that you are caught and penalized for your actions.

  • To Sheltie Owner,
I can understand your anger and the other commentator should realize the incident only just happened so you are still upset.
My little dog was also attacked by a pit-bull some years ago - I about 5 feet and a feather-lite but I went after the owner with hammer (he was over six feet and built like a brick sh**-house as we say in my neck of the woods). Not my normal demeanor, I can assure you but I was beside myself...thankfully, I'm not a gun owner!! I would protect my little dog with my life and anyone else's if need be.
These dogs are being phased out humanely in most civilized societies - existing dogs must be spayed or neutered and no new dogs may be imported into the region/country. It is fair enough after decades of tragedies.
However, another good solution would be to increase and enforce the license, maybe to $100 and even double that for dangerous breeds. I would pay more if it meant more inspectors to keep both humans and animals safe.
I know - and I'm sure Sheltie Owner knows - that there are no bad dogs, only bad owners but enough is enough!
To all these "so-called" animal lovers -if it bothers you, do something to stop these people who train pit bulls to attack for their own ends (be it fun or "business") because they are NOT animal.
    Jacey.

  • Dog owners CANNOT afford to support breed specific legislation. I always shake my head when a dog owner supports the banning of pit bulls; because by supporting Bill 132, they're sending their own dog (regardless of the breed) to its grave. Someone deems their dog menacing? It'll be taken away and killed, or sent to a labratory for experimental testing.

It is every dog lover's responsibility to fight against this unjust proposed law.

By Blogger Miss Havenlander, at 5:13 PM, January 25, 2005

  • I think it is important to realize that these types of laws will only hurt the responsible owners. Many people love their pit bulls (not a real breed, but a word used to encompass the American Staffordshire Terrier, American Pit Bull Terrier, and Staffordshire Bull Terrier, as well as any dog that looks like any of these breeds), and treat their dogs as family. Not every pit bull owner wants a "tough" dog, or an "attack" dog. Although pit bulls can be dog aggressive because of their history, they are not bred to be human aggressive. They make wonderful pets for knowledgable owners. Those who own pit bulls who are already below the law will continue to ignore these laws. Those who are upstanding citizens who just happen to love a breed once known as the "nanny dog", will be the ones who lose their loved ones. True animal lovers know that each dog has a beautiful soul - you can't assume that one dog in indicitive of the rest that look like him. He deserves to live as much as any other dog.

  • Jacey, a few years ago I (not my dog, MYSELF) was attacked by a husky. Luckily, no major damage was done before a friend pulled the dog off of me.
Do I now fear all huskies like an ignorant fool? No, they are wonderful dogs, in the hands of a capable owner. Just like any other breed.
The dogs you post of sound like behemoths. Giants with a length of 6 feet? God knows how much they weigh? These are not Pit Bulls. A purebred American Pit Bull Terrier weighs between 40-60 pounds, on average. Mine is a two year old male at a healthy, conditioned weight and he weighs 55 pounds. The dogs you had encounters with were probably poorly bred MIXED breeds.
As for the comment about only red necks or cowards owning this breed... Do you even know how many Pit Bulls are certified therapy dogs? Did you know the police and armed forces have a number of Pit Bulls in their service? Did you know Kris Crawford owns a team of fully trained Search and Rescue dogs... and they are ALL Pit Bulls?
Are these dogs useless? Should they be "phased out"? Are their owners red necks and cowards or brave, good people who use their dogs for good causes?

  • To those who believe in BSL:

No person or animal deserves to be 'attacked' by dog, regardless of breed. There are many who would believe that the bully breeds are from the loins of Satan, however, they are far from it. The only dogs that the media grabs a hold of are those that are owned by irresponsible owners who have no business owning a dog in the first place. Sadly, this has an affect on those individuals who choose to have an American Pit Bull Terrier or any of the other bully breeds.

I currently own a 1.5 year old female APBT who I couldn't imagine living my life without. Dog aggression is common in her breed, but that just makes me that much more aware of what happens around her. The APBT wasn't breed to show human agression and if a dog did, it was promptly culled. The dogs that attack humans are either poorly bred and/or poorly socialized and trained.

I sympathize with those people who have been bitten by a dog or had a pet bitten, but take into account the fact that these animals are not likely living their lives with people who truely give a darn about their welfare.

  • 3yrs ago a friend of mine had a baby PITBULL a bed had fell on one of it's backfoot and cut part of it off. This was when it was a week old I got it when it was 5 weeks old they thought it was going to die so they were going to take out to the country and kill it. I ask for the dog and they gave it to me. I took it straight to the Vet he gave it a shot and told me to keep it warm. Also it only weighed 2lbs. I did as he said and TODAY this is the most wonderful dogs I have ever owned. It would not or has not ever been MEAN to MAN or BEAST. It is how you treat your Best FRIEND (DOG) how it turns out. I have also took in 4 Other Best Friends over the last 3yrs because they have been beat or abused. They start at a Jack Russell Terrier, Now she thinks she is the badest dog we have. Someone threw her out on the Highway when she was a puppy. I also have another PIT BULL that is scared of her own shadow because her owner decided to kick all of baby teeth almost out plus leave some of the biggest BOOT marks on her I have ever seen. I,ve had her 2yrs now and she has never been mean to anyone. Then I have another part PITBULL and she is as GENTLE as an ANGEL. Then I got a part GREMANSHEPARD/ PART ROTT AND HE WAS LEFT TO DIE IN A BACK YARD. Next door to a friend of mine when his owners moved out and he is a living doll. How is all of this possible its because I show them all the LOVE and FRIENDSHIP I know how too. Plus I 3 daughters and a son in law that help me with the LOVE and KINDNESS. It is all in how you treat your BESTFRIENDS (DOGS).

  • I have to be concerned about eliminating breeds as I own one that is labeled as "dangerous"-a rottweiler. I have had him since a puppy and now he is near ten years old. He has never hurt a human and he is one of the most dog-friendly animals I have ever seen. The only thing he craves is attention and he will take all that is offered him. At well over 120# he certainly is no lap dog, but would love to be.
My concern is that euthanizing or whatever means is used, starts with pit bulls, then rottweilers, then mastiffs and so on and so on.
Now for the rancher who would call me a red-neck, I also own two 20# mixed breed terriers (rat, jack russell, fox) that are my little pals, but I guarantee that if they were the size of my rottweiler, they would be a dangerous animal to be around.

  • BSL, to me, is simply ignorance. Without pointing too many fingers, it amazes me how many people who "hate" pit bulls are unable to recognize a real APBT in a line-up.

To the gentlemen with the Shelty....I'm sorry for the lack of responsibility of the owner who's dog attacked your's. Still, it is completely insane to say anything that looks like a pit should be shot. More bites in this world are attributed to "family" dogs than can ever be held against pit bulls. Do some research and repost in a more intelligent manner. I am not a redneck, nor am I stupid. As a graduate of a top university, I think it's this understanding of the world and its surroundings that makes me want to love a bully breed even more.

Without people like you ranting and racing, the pit bull would slink back to where it once was.....as the beloved dog of many well known people. Instead, over-reactions and instant stupidity play themselves out on paper, or in this case, on the internet. Next time, we should all sit and think before we type.

  • What to do if attacked by pit bull? Does anyone know? I am a housewife with 2 small kids. My neighbors have 2 pits bulls that have wandered into my back yard. Short of shooting them while attacking, can anyone point me in the direction of some advice?

  • i think the pit bull ban is BULL, i have two pugs bull terrier mixed.. and they have to get fixed!! we had the oldest for 6 years and he hasn't bit a single person my dogs would never bite anyone enless it was protecting my family.. like if someone broke in... and someone in my family getting beat.. thats how we're raising my dogs to attack when needed... and so far it's good... they never bit anyone.. scarppy we had him for 6 years and he never bit a single person!! it's the way the owner raised them.. it's not the dog's fault the way they were raised.. so why punish a dog! I ASK WHY PUNISH THE DOG FOR THE OWNER'S FAULT!!!!!!!!!

  • I just came upon theses comments in looking at what that Bastart Micheal Bryant and his followers have done. Little Sheltie man - I think that before you decide to slam pitbulls that you should read about the dogs that roam YOUR streets. I have a pitbull, a miniature pinscher and 4 chinchillas. Guess who wants to eat the Chinchillas for breakfast, lunch and dinner. In your mind you would think my pitbull. Absolutely not. It's my little guy rather. Like one other person said you must be a redneck yourself, maybe existing in a redneck world, where your kind of people are raising people to eat your sheltie. Get out of your barn and look at what normal people do with their pets!

  • Lady with the 2 kids - funny how you said that your neighbours 2 pitbulls wandered into your yard....But didn't say that they did anything. Cause they did not! They were being curious that is it! AND WHAT THE HELL ARE ALL YOU PEOPLE DOING WITH GUNS!

  • My first dog ended up being a pit bull. It was a complete accident. My pit bull mix puppy didn't look like a pitt when i got it, but as it got bigger we noiced the pit. At first I was scared of the breed so I wanted to give it away, but my boyfriend said I took on the responsibility of raising the mutt so It was not right to give it away. (The fate of many pit bulls is a shame.) I vowed to keep the dog and be a good pit bull owner. It turned out to be the best thing I ever did. That dog was the most loving and obediant dog I've ever owned. It looked like a big monster, with it's massive head and frame, and It's harsh bark. Looks can be deceiving. This dog loved all people and dogs, showing so much love, never meeting anyone it didn't like. (Better than my black lab, who would bark and growl at strangers until I scolded her.) The sad thing about these dogs is that most of them are naturally wonderful with humans, and it is because of humans that the dogs turn bad. I do beleive that pit bull owners should be responsible for their own dogs development. It is up to them not to turn their dogs into monsters. People shouldn't try to wipe out an entire breed because other people are stupid. It just doesn't seem right.

  • kill the pitbull? are u sick, kill yourself u hick

  • I am a lover of amimals, however after reading and hearing about the morbid and brutal killings of numerous people, children, babies and other animals by pit bulls in the later years, I decided to do some research.

To put it simply, pit bulls have a split personality, inbred, rooted and ingrained in them. They WILL attack even those who love them, without reason.

Yesterday, my sweet lovable, fat black kitty, sitting in my front yard was attacked and killed by two pit bulls within seconds of going into my house to get a glass of milk. I live in a secluded area and have for 30 years, and my animals have never been in danger.

Two weeks ago the same pit bulls walked right into my house and into my living room toward one of my absolutely adorable Himalayan cats Boo Boo, (I also have her brother Yogi) who was sitting on
the sofa. I turned around from what I was doing and Yelled "NO" and they ran, but later they tried to return. I told them to "GET", (I have a very strong voice) and they left. I Didn't see them again till yesterday July 22, 2007. A week ago they killed a dog a couple of blocks away.

They are smart though, because the animal control cannot seem to find them, which means, they WILL
    be back.

Pit bulls should be either banned or licenced in every city and state. They are VERY dangerous and
those who choose to let them live among themselves and their children, are in GRAVE DANGER.

I pray for everyone who owns these demon inbred animals, that their children and themselves are not malled to death and eaten alive like so many others who also loved and adored their sweet and
    loveable doggy.

If you love yourself and your children, you would NOT own one, nor let them come near you. They
should be banned, and breeders of pitbulls should be fined and imprisoned for every life their creation destroys.

Click on the links below. I'm sure you will find it interesting the statistics on pit bull killings, verses all other dog killings. Half of the killings are done by pit bulls, mostly children, and half were attacks on the owners.

    http://www.dogbitelaw.com/Dog%20Attacks%201982%20to%202006%20Clifton.pdf
    http://www.dogbitelaw.com/PAGES/statistics.html

Please visit my website http://christianfunfair.org/lifesavers.htm. It has been active for 7 years. You will see I am for animals, not against them. I take in stray animals and find homes for them. They are one of God's greatest creations. But God did not create the pit bull, man did.

There are many good, good people who own pit bulls that have been attacked and yes, killed. Can one honestly say that out of 2,000 pit bull killings that these good people abused their dogs? That would be absurd.

  • I have an 11 week old red nosed pit named roxy and a 1 year old sheltie named axle. I fell in love with roxy as soon as I saw her and I had to have her. I did not know much about pits when I bought her, but have been doing as much research as possible. So far, Roxy is very well behaved. She can sit and shake for treats and she pottys outside most of the time. I have noticed she gets a little rough with my sheltie, but she only seems to be playing and wages her tail. I am still nervous about having her because I also have a 4 month old son. I really want to keep her and I am trying very hard to raise her to be a family friendly dog. Wish me luck. If anyone has any tips for me, please let me know!

  • I am for banning Pit Bulls and Rottweilers. They are vicious dogs.
As a child [8] I was playing in a park on a swing when a rottweiler came out of no where and bit me on the face, I now have the scar right across my cheek to remind of that day everyday! luckily my uncle was there and did to that dog was it deserved right there and then. Another incident with this breed was my aunt was attacked this morning while walking her jack russel on her street and was bitten severely on her arm, tearing through the muscle.. she is now in hospital and her dog is dead. Regardless if people say it is how you train them or care for them, it clearly is not these types of dogs [rottweilers & pit bulls] are born with an innate trait, and that is to kill.
If people want to own these breeds they need to keep a muzzle on these beast 24/7, I wouldn't trust them to take it off even for them to eat

By Anonymous Cait, at 5:30 PM, January 17, 2008

  • I hope that this comment reaches the ears of reasonable people. Consider that there are 2 victims, mamed and murdered innocent people and mamed and murdered innocent dogs. People cause these problems by being irresponsible dog owners and creating irresponsible laws. One does not fix the other. It is not, unfortunately a 1:1 correspondence. In fact bans of almost any kind band-aid an issue leaving important work undone while the masses argue non-essentials points. It really is a brilliant political diversion.

My suspicion, not knowing the actual statisitics is that the statistics are misleading. If in fact there are more pitbull injuries, it is due to preference. What I mean by that is the type of people who want to encourage dog agressiveness would choose this breed based on their strength and ability and popular intimidating appearance. These people.THESE PEOPLE not allowed to select a pitbull will indeed select another. I suppose Rotwiellers and German Shepards will appear ripe for distruction.

So, while we debate less important points about a breed, legislators get a break from people who want to see something done, and irresponsible dog owners continue to get to be themselves.

As for me, it is probably obvious that I love pit bulls. I would never let anyone hurt my dog who has in fact helped many people. For one, I found him in terrible condition, so poor that I don't understand why he is so gentle with people having been dealt a bad hand by people. Since then,I have used him to help build confidence and reading skills with children in inner city schools. It's amazing to watch the kids open up around him. He brightens the day of so many people with his quirky goofy ways. In 6 years, he has never shown 1 ounce of aggression towards people, dogs or cats for that matter. Unfortunately, even a burglar was able to have their way with him on our couch. It's funny now. But before I found him, I didn't even know that I liked pit bulls. Now I'm a huge fan. Since then, I have found many pitbulls dumped on the streets by owners who do this without consequence or education. Many, I've had put down due to their condition and some have found excellent homes.

This law isn't about pitbulls. IT's a quick fix. That's pretty much about it. It's about the ban that doesn't solve a problem for humans or animals. It is about infringement on freedom as a law abiding citizen. I'll give an example or 2. How many alcohol and gun related deaths are there each year? Why won't the government ban alcohol and guns? It could save thousands of lives. However, these things are not banned, they are regulated with age requirements, and many other stipulations. That is because we have these freedoms. Most people do not abuse these freedoms. But for those who do, the laws are becoming more stiff each year. If we want fewer dog (not just pitbull) attacks, laws must reflect this same logic. Think about it. And Thank you for your consideration.
