Cosmetic Surgery for Dogs May Become Illegal in West Hollywood

Monday, February 07, 2005

The city of West Hollywood, in Southern California, is considering a law to ban certain cosmetic procedures on dogs, such as tail docking and ear cropping. They already have a law banning declawing. Mayor John Duran was quoted:
"I believe the anti-declawing ordinance was the first step in addressing cruelty to animals, but we have to do more, and this proposed ordinance is the next step."
The law would also ban any surgical procedure designed to prevent a dog from barking, removing fangs, or any procedure that is deemed non-curative.

  • Could you post a copy of the law... does it mean that if I try to move from another city with my faithful Dobie to west hollywood that I couldn't bring him in, or is it only stopping cropping procedures within the city limits?

  • The existing law banning declawing is codified under 9.49.020 of the West Hollywood Municipal Code, which prohibits people from performing an onychectomy (declawing). So therefore, my belief is that these proposed laws to ban ear cropping, tail docking, and other procedures, is limited to performing these procedures only. Thus, if you already have a pet that had these procedures done, there is no violation, and it would not be against the law to take your animal outside of city limits to have these procedures either.
