El Paso Shelter Euthanizes Family Dog by Mistake

Friday, February 25, 2005

The fear of reality was brought to the City of El Paso, when it was reported that animal control picked up a family's poodle, took it back to the city shelter, and euthanized it the next day.
Out in the West Texas town of El Paso
I fell in love with a Mexican girl
Another report came out weeks later that the mistake was due to a procedural problem compounded by a lack of available staffing.
Off to my right I see five mounted cowboys
Off to my left ride a dozen or more
"The dog did not die in vain. It is improving the system," said Loretta Hyde, a member of the committee and the Animal Rescue League.
Something is dreadfully wrong, for I feel
A deep burning pain in my side
The Humane Society of El Paso has written an open letter to the public trying to distance itself from the city animal control.
Cradled by two loving arms that I'll die for
One little kiss, then Felina good-bye
Apologies to Marty Robbins.

  • Other then that it was an El Passo shelter that made the mistake, I have no idea why the author put parts of the song "El Passo" into the story but Marty Robbins is the country music singer who had a #1 hit about 25-30 years ago when he recorded it.

  • my sister also had a pregnant pitbull euthanized by mistake at the pound, after it was kept in quarantine for 10 days. i believe that if el paso really cared about its over populated pet situation then they wouldn't be making mistakes like these but trying to get more people to tackle the dilemma, it hurts the families as well as God's creatures. Sure you can always get a new dog but what about fixing a broken heart.

  • I suggest that citizens here in El Paso should set up a campaing for better laws to protect our animals from animal control.Recently, my cat whom is a senior happened to be put in quarantine for biting a little girl, but my cat was inside the whole time, asleep. I experience threat from animal control that i needed to sign a paper and i suggested him to leave but he fully refused to. THe law doesn't protect you or your animals, and neither does animal control. They make mistakes and it should be suggested that there should be a law to protect us and our animals for accusations, picking up dogs without a 1st refferal warning, euthanization mistakes. THey should be sued. In the end i had to pay for almost $275 dollars of quarantine for something my cat didn't do. I felt that as a citizen i wasn't protected by the law or especially my cat, instead i felt i didn't have any rights. We need to create a system or capaign or something to protect our animals from animal control. I also would recommend that you stand and fight for your animals/pets when animal control takes them from you. They don't have the right even if they are a seperate system of the laws.

  • Are you people stupid or what? CALL A LAWYER!!!!! your rights are being walked over! Call the ASPCA, call the AKC, call AFLCIO! Stand up for yourselves!

  • Stand up for yourselves!
These people have been too enabled to do anything for themselves. They believe someone else needs to solve their problems. El Paso is not synonymous with "personal responsibility".

  • I can't believe what is happening to this country as a whole. A business is short-handed, makes one mistake, albeit a regrettable one, and everyone starts screaming "Call a lawyer". As far as the pit bull being euthanized I say "AMEN"!!!! Those animals are too dangerous to even be considered in the dog family. Ft Bliss has banned ALL pit bull breeds (including pit mixes) and Rotweillers. It's about time! Then you have people here who are so uneducated they can't even spell a simple word like "what"! I'd be embarassed to post something for the world to see that I don't even have a 2nd grade education when it's free in this country! No wonder places like China, Korea, Japan and others are passing the US by more every day. Wake up AMERICA!!!
