Letting a Dog Lick Your Mouth

Published today in a health column in Deseret News, is a question about whether or not it is healthy to let a dog lick you on the mouth.

Joe and Teresa Graedon who writes this column, suggest that while you may not catch a cold virus from a dog, that there are other things to be aware of:
Some germs could be transmitted from pet to owner. Cats can carry Pasteurella multocida, which can cause sinus infections in humans. dogs might be infected with Bordetella bronchoseptica (kennel cough), which could pose a problem, especially for immune-compromised patients. Such patients might also be susceptible to strep and staph infections carried by pets.
Personally, I wouldn't let any unfamiliar animal or person to transfer their saliva into my mouth. But that's just me.

  • Letting a dog lick your mouth is nasty. I would however allow my dog to do it in other areas such as your hands or even your foot. A lick is a dogs way of saying he or she loves you . This is kind of like a kiss, but wtter.

  • A dog naturally licks the mouth of the leader(s) of the pack. It is how wolf pups would start the regurgation reflex in the leader, so the pup could eat. Dogs have not lost this instinct, and still lick hoping it will lead to being feed.

  • Some dogs have the very nasty habit of eating feces. I have observed various dogs doing this... either eating their own or one they have found on the ground.

    Apart from the aesthetics of eating scat, there is a very strong chance of passing worms and other body parasites.

    This is one reason that many (non-Anglo) cultures regard all dogs as dirty animals.

    But of course, your dog would never do that! ;-) How can you be sure?

  • I think that there is really nothing to worry about when a dog licks you in the face. They do have the cleaner have cleaner mouths than us b/c they pant and the air eliminates bacteria in there mouth that would stay in ours. So I even kiss my dog back!!

  • Dogs' mouths are not cleaner than humans. But the germs that live in a dog's mouth are "dog" germs. Most germs cannot infect across species, with a few notable exceptions. So unless your dog actually has the fresh germs from some nasty encounter outside, the germs in his mouth are not adapted to living within a human body. They don't know how to attack us. Cat's mouths are no different, and certainly not any dirtier than ours. That is some funny ignorant nonsense, though.

  • The question or myth that a dogs mouth is cleaner than a humans is absolutely not true. As we speak my son is doing a science project on that very topic. There are too many variables, and as humans we do not eat garbage, use our tongue as washcloths and toilet paper, or snack on other neighborhhod remnants, therefore we are noticing in our project that bacteria grows faster in a petri dish of dog saliva than a humans.

  • I right now am doing a project on this subjuct. Any way, i have a dog and she is the greatest thing in my life! I love her to death! She is my little baby.   • To be licked or not, that is the question. It could give you a case of e coli, but like anything else in life it is a personal choice. People that see dogs/cats etc. as carriers of microbes are probably right, so a person has to decide whether they prefer "doggie lovies" to a safer more sterile relationship with their pet. Dogs will follow their owners cue or instruction. They really don't seem to care one way or the other if they are taught as puppies.

  • I'm pretty sure that the few people with the crotch licking dogs are just joking. Really, somtimes people just try to get others going, and so long as they really are just joking, well then it is kinda funny. Chill out.

    As far as the actual question at hand, do what you want. I don't let my dog lick me, and I still love him, but if you let your dog lick you, who cares? I think dogs lick mouths because they can smell food, not because they are showing affection. I don't think animals are that caring. It's more about posession with them than love. Those who think their pets get jealous of other animals, nah, they just think they own you and they are showing off their posession. I'm not trying to be rude, just realistic. I doubt my pets love me, and I really don't care because they are cute, and sweet, and I love them.

  • I agree with about everything the above said.. earlier dirty posts were joking ( I hope! haha ) and there is nothing dirty about letting your own dog lick on the mouth. However I'd never let someone else's dog lick me on the mouth.

    I believe the above is right also about dogs generally showing dominance or looking for food to a certain extent. However I will be naive and believe that my dogs love me. They pick favorites, cuddle, my g/f tells me they both cry when I leave but not for anyone else, and seem TRULY happy to see me when I return. Maybe I'm being silly, but I love my dogs and like being so. :)

  • To each his/her own. I love all my dogs; allowed them to lick me on the arm, and and face, but never on the or in the mouth. To me, that is tantamount to french kissing a dog, regardless of the whole germ issue. I love my dogs sort of like my children too (the kids come first though) and I don't let me kids tongue kiss me, so why should I let me dogs? One of my in-laws allowed a dog to kiss my child in the mouth. When I got angry, they actually tried to force upon me how okay it was!!!

  • If you actually look up the information you will find that it is an urban legend that a dog's mouth is "cleaner" than a human's.

    Also the comment that "They do have the cleaner mouths than us b/c they pant and the air eliminates bacteria in there mouth that would stay in ours" is completely untrue. Saliva helps to rinse food debris and bacteria off our teeth and out of our mouths. The more air the mouth is exposed too the drier it is, leaving the bacteria on teeth to cause cavities, and on the gums and tongue, causing bad breath. The panting would increase the amount of bacteria.

  • It's a myth that dogs have cleaner mouths than humans based in the fact that a dog bite on a human might not become infected as easily as a human bite to a human. Dogs' mouths carry bacteria, even more than humans because of where they lick and what they eat, but it's mostly canine specific bacteria. If a dog licks your mouth, any virus, bacteria, or parasite the dog is carrying on its tounge from licking itself or eating feces or carrying a dead animal in its mouth would be placed on your lips. Even if you wip off the saliva, that won't necessarily wipe off or kill the virus, bacteria and parasites. Then if someone else kisses you, or you kiss someone else, or you lick your lips, you or they would be ingesting the virus, bacteria, or parasites. It's just something to keep in mind if you're talking about babies, small children, or immuno-compromised adults.

    I have seen the bulging outline of a parasite under the surface of a child's eyeball from letting a dog lick his mouth.

    There are other ways to let your dog show love.

    my dog has very bad habbits and very bad breath . I would never let him lick my mouth or inside my mouth.

    yes dogs can be dirty but they are 100% genuine and love their owners.
