Purina Recalls Pet Food

Saturday, February 19, 2005

Nestle Purina voluntarily has recalled all of the pet-food products made at its plant in Venezuela after discovering toxins in the food.

According to the St. Louis Post Dispatch:
The problem is limited to Purina's La Encrucijada plant, its only facility in Venezuela. None of the food was sold in the United States. The recall includes about 10 brands; all the products are dry pet foods.

Nestle Purina PetCare discovered the problem after veterinarians contacted the food maker and complained of sick animals. The company launched an internal investigation and confirmed the problem on Feb. 3.
Apparently the toxins are caused by mold. The company is trying to figure out what's causing the mold.

84 Comments:

  • I know 9 sick dogs in the calera, montevallo area who have died or sick with diareah, vomit and starving for 6-10 days...

I believe it has to be a dog food poison or MOLD here in the US.

    VETS, PLEASE REPORT THIS TYPE

  • My 6 yr old AKC grman shepard died after eating purina dog food! The day we found our dog dead, our border collie was sick! The shepard ate 100% and the collie ate maybe 30% at the most...go figure. Oh yes and one very sick cat too. The only compinsation I have recieved is a check for a mere 14.00 (cost of food)

I feed my cats Friskie can food. My cats has been vomiting. I am wondering if this food is included in the recall. Or maybe it is coincidental. I am concerned>>>>

  • My cat had breathing problems and then would not eat. The vet said the results from blood tests showed that she had kidney failure. He said there was nothing that could be done for her so I had to have her put down. She had been eating Purina Cat Chow. Signed, Missing my cat in Illinois.

  • I have had 2 of my precious cats die in the past 2 months and they have been eating purina indoor formula. I am devistated!!. More research needs to be done immediately to make sure that other animals are not hurt. I also have a dog that has been eating purina and I will no longer by this brand.

The vet is treating her with steroid injection and antibiotics. She seems fine when she is on the medication but goes back to being sick when she is off her medication. I'm going to stop feeding her purina dog food just in case.... Pueblo Colorado

Tuesday the report was he was feeling better. He died Tuesday nite or Wed. morning. Charged her $600.00. That following Friday, we heard about the recall. He wa

  • My pet is now officially off of Purina anything. This is horrible and we can't even get a straight answer. I encourage everyone to get away FAST fom Purina who won't even acknowledge a problem or make it easier to get the list on their website.

  • I don't understand how they can be so certain that dry food is not affected. It also uses the ingredients that are causing these deaths.
I was feeding my puppies a dry weaning diet, reconstituted. One pup almost died and the vets can't pinpoint what caused it.
He was revived with IV fluids and antibiotics.
What I would love to see is this bag of food tested! Isn't there some way that dry foods that are suspect, might be tested?

  • So Sorry to hear about everyone's problems... But I wonder if its the Purina or something else.

I am feeding: Three dogs, ages 3,7,and 16; Six pupies, age five weeks; and, Six cats of various ages (two are the neighbors)

All we feed right now is Purina. We feed Dog Chow, Puppy Chow, Purina One Healthy Puppy, Friskies Dry and Wet, and Alpo.

Just at the vet yesterday for a checkup! Knock on wood, all is fine.

wal-mart does anyone think its possible that the warehouse where its kept before wal mart ships it out might be the source of contamination?????????

  • We had to have our 9 year old cat put to sleep and she always ate purina dry cat food. the sickness started about 4 to 6 months ago kept taking her to the vet., and they would give her antibiotics. She would be better till they were gone. Then it would start up again. simptoms were alot of scratching, vomiting, and biting herself till she looked like the cat from the movie pet cemetary. Poor cat wish id have know what it was then.

  • My 10 yr old German Shepard became ill after eating Purina One Senior dry food. She started vomiting food, bile and drinking excessive water. She also developed loose runny, dark stools. I changed her food back to Purina One Adult dry food and she seemed fine until I purchased another bag of Purina One Adult. Same reaction. I think it is in the dry food also. I don't trust them I now make my own food until this is over. Thankfully she is OK.

  • My one sister fed her dog a can of Alpo about 3 weeks ago and it threw it up and the next morning they took it to the vet and it died...he said that it could have been poisoned. My other sister feeds her dog Alpo chunks with gravy and dry dog food but he threw it up and she got him something else to eat, he does not act well and she has stopped the Alpo even though it is not on the recall list of products.

  • d recall has affected so many loved pets. My DIL's kitty became ill last week and is currently under the care of a Vet getting dialysis.
    Kitty was eating pouched Iams....

There are so many unanswered questions:
Where did the poison come from? IMO it won't be linked to the wheat, that is just a temporary diversion.

How could these products ever made it to consumers? What about quality control/testing?

After coming to this website and seeing that pets on a dry food diet are being affected, it is clear to me that this will get much bigger.

Who supplied the product? (by-product of human food supply selling there leftovers to Menu Foods?)
It is common knowledge that animal parts that are left over or not for human consumption are rendered into pet food.

For a possible stretch of the imagination: Is this a test to see how far a poison can travel before it is discovered? A way to Beef up security? etc... Let me stop before I get too political.

  • My cat has also been throwing up for a few months off and on. And he refuses to eat the cat food. I am going to start making him homemade cat food and may go into business making it! I can't believe that they would poison our animals. I never realized how much they mean to me and so many!! This is ridulous and looks like they just don't give a rip!!

  • 12 yr old Schnauzer, eating Purina Dry Chicken and Rice, died of Kidney failure at end of Feb after several weeks of gradually going down hill.
Vomit about once a day, yellow liquid of all of her food. Everything was fine prior to this.

  • Since learning about all this, I've been doing research about dog food in general and am disgusted with what I've been feeding my beloved dogs...kibbles and bits...yuck the stuff my dogs have been eating!!! Even if it isn't tainted, I've decided all this stuff is toxic to my animals and it's time for a change...no more ground up road kill for my babies.

  • I took our dog off of all wet food after the Alpo scare. I now feed him Pedigree dry mixed with cooked ground beef or cooked chicken. Also a good substitute is baby food meat products -- It helps wet the dry food. No more wet food will be used in this house.

  • Guinness (lab mix, age 6) ate PURINA ONE lamb and rice dry dog food. Over the period of about a month she began to "slow down." We didn't think much of it. Then, very rapidly, she became extremely lethargic, depressed, drooled a lot, drank a lot but stopped eating. The first vet we visited suspected Addison's disease. We put her on steroids but over the course of one week she stopped eating all together, lost strength, lost her ability to walk, began vomiting, became incontinent and developed bloody diarrhea. She died in the vet hospital 8 days after her first trip to the vet ER. We buried her yesterday and now I'm trying to explain to my two young children why their friend is gone.

  • My dog Earl has been eating the Alpo wet and we just found out last night it was recalled. I though my dog was safe because there had not been a recall on this.He also eats dry Purina dog-Naturally complete, is this safe?
I can't seem to find a list of dry foods and also what reaction should I be looking for from my dog.

  • Our 14 year old dog was diagnosed with kidney failure 2 weeks ago. Tried to nurse him with no luck and had to put him down. Figured it was his body/age shutting down.

Then Friday find out Alpo now joins the recall list. We had been feeding him the Alpo prime cuts in gravy the last few months, and the codes on the left over cans match. So, now I'm convinced this led to his death and I feel terrible.

On top of that, there will be no way to prove any of it and the company will not have to worry about it.

    Thanks Purina....

  • Our dog "Buddy" had to be put down after rapid weight loss, would not touch food anymore, frequent drinking and urination for over a month prior to him having to be put down, then in last week of life, in last few days of his life he would not even eat human food which he would normally devour, but only drink water. Day before he had to be put down he had extreme vomiting and diarhhea, and was very weak as well as his left eye appeared as though it was going blind, and finally he could hardly move around anymore and then would not drink anything either late Friday night, on Saturday am his breathing was shallow and he did not move much (very weak and dehydrated) we had made an appointment too see vet Saturday Mrch 31, 2007 at noon was earliest we could get in and at that point we knew the only outcome was euthanizing our faithful family friend of almost 9 years (he seemed to age twice his age in past month particularily last few days he was sick) and he too had ate Purina Beneful dry dog food since Feb, 2007 and Kibble n Bits new homestyle since Jan, 2007. This has the marking of being slowly poisoned when kidneys shut down due to something in his diet that was not healthy for himself.

We will miss our friend, but we hope no one else have to see this happen again. Boycott the dog food makers and only buy products without all the fillers and God knows what else they put in products (EVERYONE CHECK YOUR LABELS FOR INGREDIENTS, AND CHECK WITH VETS; PAY A PREMIUM FOR CONFIRMED QUALITY DOG FOOD VS TAKING COMPANIES WORD FOR IT, BETTER YET MAKE YOUR OWN FROM PRODUCTS YOU CAN BE SURE OF FROM THE SAME ITEMS THAT YOU WOULD EAT THAT OUR HEALTHY FOR YOURSELF). I wish I had only fed him what I ate except for the treats of course then maybe he would still be alive today and for years too come!

July 2004 - nearly lost my dog to the same issues of today. Not eating, vomiting, diahrea, fever, etc. My dog lost 16 lbs (100 lb German Shepard) in 5 days. Below is an email between myself and purina.... People the companies will lie - this was three years ago, and my dog hasn't been right since. And, no, I didn't get reimbursed for my vet bills. I did get a coupon - whoo whoo

    my response

Unfortunately, I took the food back to Petsmart (Chesterfield, MO) for a refund. I explained to them what happened so that they do not sell the food to someone else. I don't know if they will contact you regarding this or not. I didn't think to write down the lot number on it.

After 5 days, $200 in vet bills, 16 lost pounds, and medication, my dog is doing better. Just extremely tired.

I appreciate your response. It does seem that you care about your quality. I hope that no other dogs become ill.

    Sincerely,

    xxxxxx

  • I love my dogs. The first recall I stopped feeding them dog food period not matter what kind. They are not going to tell us if all dog foods are contaminated because of the ALL MIGHTY DOLLAR so it's up to us to make that decision. What's wrong with cooking the food yourself and feeding them. I have and my dogs are fine. Yes, it's a little costly but, so are hospital bills. I prefer to cook their food then go through the heart ache and pain of seeing them suffer or die. SO PEOPLE LESS MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICE AND DO RIGHT BY OUR ANIMALS.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 12:34 PM, April 11, 2007

  • After reading responses that date back a few years PEOPLE STOP FEEDING YOUR DOGS THIS STUFF. Buy various (people)foods in bulk and feed your dogs. You can cook the food in large quantity and store it in the freezer. What's wrong with a little meat, rice or potatoes, gravy, and vegetables, my dogs love it. They are healthy and strong. I have two Shih Tzus. I love them two much to take a chance with their lives. I couldn't bear to see them suffer or die. They can't make these decision but, we can. Be smart and do the right thing. From one animal lover to several.

  • Our 11 year old German Shepherd was on Purina dry food and she developed dark stools, diareah,
drank lots of fluids. Took her to
the Vet and they brought her back to life. The dog had an inflamed
stomach. We now have her home on a blan diet consisting of rice,
chicken, venison, and chicken broth. She's grdually recovering.
We'll prepare her food from here on in. We feel it was the Purina
dry dog food that caused the inflamation of her stomach and
pet doctor bills that were extemely
high. The Vet said it could be the food but he felt there was no way to confirm it.

  • I have two family pets that chose to eat purina moist and meaty, which is not wet nor dry food. It is in plastic wrap and is a soft food. now both are fighting some type of kidney disorder. They have never ate any other type of food and are just 1yr old. Consumers please be aware of this food!

  • I just lost a Fennec Fox, she was fed Purina One Cat Chow indoor formula and 9live (Chicken & Gravy). First she went off food, was only drinking, than had a horrible diarrea and finally kidneys failure with a very weak liver. She started getting sick several weeks ago. She was 6 and was never sick before... Vets can't explain the sudden decline in her health, they tried everything to save her without success...

Ididn't want to get panicky since purina wasn't on the FDA list, but my dogs been eating dry purina one (red bag i think its original) and she couldnt barely move two weeks ago, a lot of shaking non-epileptic, and barely walked. I took her off it all and fed her whole grain rice, grean beans, eggs and turkey and she's feeling a lot better. did my dog almost die? how do i know if she needs vet treatment? She's ok now...

  • I own a small pet boutique, and I carry natural, human grade dog foods. I did my research on dog food before we opened, and were completely disgusted with what we found. We immediately switched our dogs' food. The problem for us consumers is...that no one knows where to find information on the foods and how to decipher the already manipulated ingredient list on the bags...or what they mean. That doesn't include what they lie about or hide. My hope is to help people to learn what they are feeding to their pet. I have a few recommendations for people who'd like more information. I can recommend some foods: Anything from Natura Pet is my favorite. They make 5 brands. I settled on Innova, Innova Evo, California Natural, Karma (organic). They are the only pet food company that can back-up their "human-grade" with an USDA and Organic Certified facility (they make their own food). They have a website www.naturapet.com and also a nutritionist on staff. You can compare ingredients and foods on their website. They are about $40 for their largest bag, but you certainly get what you pay for!!! I can't say enough! Also, Solid Gold. They don't manufacture their own food, but they source from only the best places. They also use plant oils for their fat source rather than chicken fat. Their website is www.solidgoldhealth.com also with a nutrionist on staff. Wellness made by Old Mother Hubbard is similar to Solid Gold. I also recommend Eagle Pack HOLISTIC Line (they manufacture their own) and Canidae for a good "basic" food. I've not done much research on any other foods, because I feel that this is a good variety to find a formula for each dog and price level. You can find information out there, but you have to look in the right places, and decide what companies are being truthful. A good book that I'd recommend is "Foods Pets Die For" and her latest version "Protect you Pet" by Ann Martin. She had done tons of research, and has vets and other qualified individuals backing her up. It can be bland in parts, but you would not believe what pet food companies can get away with. She also explains how the FDA and organizations work WITH the pet food companies. It's very eye opening. If you can get ahold of the first version...I'd recommend it.

  • Five months before the Pet Food Recall began, my cat almost died from renal failure. It came out of the blue, and three different vets told me they had no idea what was happening and that basically he was going to die -- his levels were off the charts. They just blasted him with fluids as a last-ditch effort. Miraculously, he pulled through. They were as much shocked by his sudden kidney failure as by his recovery. Of course, he still must get regular subcutaneous fluids. At the time, he was eating Friskies Sliced Chicken in Gravy. This, of course, is made by Nestle Purina. It is NOT on the recall list. I am convinced his renal failure is related to tainted food. I spoke with Friskies and they say it cannot be -- that the wheat gluten used in his food was not tainted and was not at the same plant as the contaminated wheat gluten they were using. They asked for the information on the can -- who has the can? That was months before the recall surfaced. I called the FDA and no one has yet to call me back. I am certain there is much we do not know.

  • Our dog was fine Sunday,March 25 then started throwing up Monday March 26. We could not get a vet to see him until Tuesday afternoon on March 27. He was no longer drinking water or eating. The vet did blood work and the results showed severe dehydration, kidney failure and his pancreas was inflammed. He was six years old. We were feeding him regular Kibbles N' Bits and a month before he bacame sick we had switched him to Lean Kibble's N' Bits. He was also getting Pedigree Marrow Bones and Pedigree Dog Treats. The vet said he could put in IV but it looked pretty hopeless. By then he could no longer walk or even lift his head. So we had him euthanized. We feel devastated to this day. I don't believe they will ever admit just how many pet foods are contaminated.

  • Our cat was eating Purina Indoor Cat Formula for months now, He was 3 years old and had been seeming to lose weight and not want to eat lately. 7 days ago he began vomiting, had runny diarrhea, difficulty breathing, convulsions, and finally died in my oldest son's arms as he tried to get him to a friends house (we were out of town). We initially thought he had some sort of genetic problem but after reading these posts is is chillingly similiar to what other pet owners are describing.

  • My dog died from massive, unexplained kidney failure at 3-months of age. The breeder and vet both suggested dog food. My dog ate Purina for puppies. Apparantly the massive kidney failure has been a common affliction from this poisoned food. More people have to speak up and complain inorder for these companies to be held responsible!

  • My dog is dying right now as I type this. I fed my healthy 8 year old Pit Bull "Pro-Plan" from a bag I bought back in June. She got sick, I took her to the vet and when her health improved I integrated the Pro-Plan back into her diet, unaware that all of this was going on. It started happening all over again now she is 15 pounds underweight and clinging on to dear life. AVOID PRO-PLAN

  • I feel for all of your pain and suffering. We just finally got my dream puppy, a Pomeranian. I wish now I had looked at dog food a bit more closely as the seller gave me a trial bag of purina puppy chow. Puppy was extremely active all morning, but we were stuck in the town for a few hours and it had travel 3 hours previously so I opened the bag and gave him a handful. I feel like I may have given him a death sentence. 10 hours later he hadn't eaten anything else, was becoming even more listless than before, praying he will be fine till morning as we have no vets close enough to get to, till tomorrow. He drinks water occassionally, runny stools and vomiting. My little fox is suffering and all I can do is hold him and pray that he will be fine.

With big companies acting irresponsible for that almighty dollar, there may be only one way to reach them and get their attention. Keep your documentation, have the food evaluated and file a class action lawsuit, lobby for changes. Sometimes even the coldest of people can be reached through their wallet.

Good luck to all of you out there,

    Blessed be.

  • PURINA PUPPY CHOW
    we have 5 pit bulls,
2 of which are very sick (vomiting, and bloody diareah)
some close friends of ours, with a puppy from our family of pit bulls, has died, right along with 2 other of their friends dogs too, all of these dogs were fed supposedly nothing but the best.....purina puppy chow.
all of the sick dogs show the same symptoms i described. Nestle Purina, you could only imagine, makes millions of dollars out of their puppy chow alone. honestly i think they paid someone off to keep their name from the recall list, because if i would have known, i would have dont it a long time ago.....I am positive that whats causing these illnesses in our pets is their food. if my dog lives through this, from now on i will only make my dog human food,. i know of about 10 dogs dying from eating this same food.

  • On June 24, 2007 our dog Snoopy died he was 12 years old. The only dog food he ate was Purina Beneful. He had been extremely healthy until January then he stopped eating and was extremely thirsty he had had problems walking and standing up. He threw up mold and bile. This went off and on for 5 months four vets could not figure out what was wrong with him organs were functioning properly. 3 other vets were consulted by phone they had no clue either. Then he got extremely dehydrated the vet had a problem finding a vein to put an iv in. With in two hours of the IV he was dead. Even though the vets could not explain this we coped by blaming old age. But He had been very healthy and well taken care of, inside dog with regular vet check ups until this point. His dad was healthy and lived to be over 16. The cat Rocky who was 8 had similiar problems, but not as extreme. On a friday he was fed a new bag of purina cat food for the first time. By Saturday he was weak by Sunday he could not move and had all the same simptoms of Snoopy the dog a month before. A different vet tried to put an IV in and had a problem finding a vein also. The IV put too much fluids in him and he almost died other vets were consulted and none could figure out the problem either. He died that wednesday. All any vet could determine was that is was an unknown toxin that killed them both. Both had extensive tests and the vets bills were well over $1000.00. I began ckecking the internet and reading about all these other problems with purina. Was it the food that killed both my mothers babies? Purina says their food has been tested and was fine. But no blood tests showed a certain toxin in the animals either, both just had ALL symtoms of a toxin. They died within a month of each other they were inside animals that were not exposed to any kind of toxins or poisons, healthy well taken care of animals dead for no reason. The food was the only thing they had in common Purina sometimes they even ate each others food when nobody was around to stop them. Anybody that has had this problem PLEASE write in. Julie the dog breeder if you read this please leave me a way to email you or something. I would love to hear what all you have came up with. These animals were like my mothers children and it has taken me two months to be able to write this if it is the food these companies need to be stopped, if it wasnt the food i would love to know what killed them.

  • Help! What should I do if I feel my dog food is contaminated and not on the recall list?

I read that other dog foods are being investigated. My dog has all the signs: Sluggishness, loss of appetite, jaundice eyes, yellow gums and belly, vomitting, dark brown urine. She had an xray done of her stomach and her liver, spleen and kidney are enlarged. She also had bloodwork done and her enzyme levels for her liver and kidney were off the charts high. She is being treated by her vet & is showing some signs of improvement. I started her on a new dog food on Sat. Sept.4 (Purina Pro Plan Chicken & Rice Senior). Ten days later she stopped eating it and then showed all the above symptoms. I still have the dog food and would like to have it tested, but I'm not sure how. I called the FDA & they were no help, infact very rude. I strongly feel this food is contaminated. My vet says it's a possibility and only told me to call the food company. What should I do?
    Thank you,
    Jill

  • It is so sad and heartbreaking to hear that it is till going on.... but I have been watching almost everyday...hoping and praying it was over but knowing somewhere in my heart it was not. I am so sorry
and my heart goes out to all of you going through what I had to go through May 12, 2007. I lost my beautiful, healthy, precious lab mix the same way. All of the same symptoms you all have mentioned going on with her and not knowing what could be wrong until it was too late. I have joined a clas action lawsuit to make them pay and hopefully draw attention to this so that this tragedy will never have to happen again. If you want to contact me, especially Julie the Breeder, since I fed my inside, pampered pets Purina dry food exclusively before my beloved "Isis" death. She was young and full of life and this didn't need to happen to her, us or any of these precious and loved animals. We thought we were giving the best, because that is what we were told in the advertisements and tv commercials. We loved our animals and provided and cared for them in the best ways we knew how, thought the first reaction is one of profound sadness and guilt that we weren't able to protect our babies, in fact they, the pet food manufacturers are the ones who are guilty as charged and they will be held accountable for this!!!!! We must hold them to their accountability, we must now get angry, and make them pay!!!or who else will speak for our animals.

  • I have a 3 year old Lab Retriever. I usually feed her Eukanuba, but I was running out of food and not near the pet store. I was in Target and purchased Purina One, Adult Dog, Large Breed Healthy Weight. My Lab became extremely sick for a week. Bloody diarrhea, week long of vomiting, extreme weight loss. I had her back and forth to the vet several times for many different tests. Cost me close to $1,000.
We took her off the Purina poison and got her back on the Eukanuba. I will never buy any Purina product again.

  • Hi, I've been feeding my dog the cans of Purina with no problems, but a few days ago, I bought her the Purina indoor small crunchy bites from Walmart, and she has been throwing up constantly. She has been drinking a lot of water though. I took her off of it yesterday just in case it was something else, and will try her again tomorrow to make sure. Will repost with results. JC--10/30/07

  • I stopped feeding my dog the Purina indoor small crunchy bites, and she stopped throwing up the next day. Thankfully she only had a small bit of the food. I tried her again with a small bit of the food, and she started throwing up again. She's been off of it for a couple days and is right as rain.. I hope that noone buys this brand, I will certainly tell everyone I know not to. JC 11/3/07

  • We lost one of our three dogs to Purina Mighty Dog canned food. The other two, though younger, recovered. When our dogs first got sick, I had to take the oldest one to the vet. Cost over $600.00 to get her stabilized. We took her home and the next day it was announced that there was poisoned dog food being sold by Purina and others. I called the vet office and advised them of the problem but they had not seen any reports at the time. Rest assured, they have by now. Our Loni held on for two more weeks but the poison damage was already too extensive.
Needless to say, I no longer use Purina products. Purina is owned by Nestle. Nestle, being an international entity is looking for a cheap way to push their products. They, like many other companies, rushed over to China to do business without doing a QA program to insure the quality of their products. This to me, is inexcusable. Nestle and Purina have essentially thumbed their collective noses at the American public. I can never trust Purina again !

  • I just lost another family pet.
This is the third dog , I have lost in the past 2 weeks.PLEASE DO NOT FEED YOUR PETS ANY ALPO FLAVOR DOG FOOD,OR ANY PURINA BRAND FOR THAT MATTER.My dogs suffered with vomitting, bloody diarrhea, all the symptoms assoiciated with the bad dog food, the vet bill just for one was well over $800.00 but,if I think it would save our family pet I would do it again. The vet said it was the food,so please check your pets food and watch for sickness the first sign of it please get them to a vet, maybe it could be caught in time.We lost ours anyway :~( but maybe there's a chance.

  • I just lost my cat, I decided to change his caned cat food, as it didn't seem to satisfy his hunger.
I asummed it had to much water.

So, I changed to the Purina canned cat food. This satisfyied his hunger, but, after 1 week he began to loose weight VERY RAPID...
then he stoped eating or drinking.
( Happened in 14 days after beginning the Purina canned cat Food )
My vet gave him IV with ntibotics,
    but they didn't help.
I had to put him down yesterday, as he was becomming severly dehydarated and slowly starving to death. I asked my vet and he said the pet food problem was all taken care of. I tend to disagree.

  • Just lost my older (17) cat to kidney failure only to now have my younger cat going through the exact same thing. I had switched them both to Purina One over the last 6 months.

I had no idea that this was happening to others. I feel like I killed my cats.

I had switched my dogs to Purina, as well. I just put it all in the trash.

I will be having my younger cat put down this weekend. She is declining rapidly.

    This has got to stop!

  • I just bought purina pro plan "natural" can cat food for my cats and now they are all vomiting. The dry food I feed them is "Science Diet Sensitive Stomach". They ate both of these successfully after the cat food recall without getting sick - but the latest bag and cans I bought from the store in March 08 are getting them very sick. I do not know if it is the canned pro plan naturals or the science diet sensitive stomach dry. Has anyone else been seeing problems with either of these products in their animals? If so, can you please email me at sonoran_desert@yahoo.com ? I am starting to suspect cat food poisoning again...

  • I purchased a container of Purina Pro-Plan dry cat food for my kitties on Jan 9th. Within days all three were vomiting and had diarrhea. I returned that container to Petsmart and purchased another container of the same food. Two of my cats rebounded nicely. The third, who was elderly, did not rebound. a couple of weeks later he started vomiting feces, which was disgusting. I took him to the vets repeatedly, but they didn't seem to know what was going on. This kitty died at the end of February. His initial symptoms were vomiting and diarrhea. Later he showed extreme weakness, he couldn't walk without staggering, the vets said he showed signs of kidney failure and severe dehydration. Just passing on my experiences. This cat was very healthy before all this started.

  • Three weeks ago I switched my cat food to purina cat food. My 12 week old kitten got very sick, throwing up not eating not drinking. I had to force water into him with a dropper. I figured it was the food since my older cat was sick too. they both recovered....now yesterday my husband purchased purina indoor complete dog food dry. My 5 year old mini schnauzer has been throwing up all night as well as my 14 year old 105 pound lab. Now if you dont think that is disgusting to wake up to having to clean think again. They were all just fine yesterday and this morning all of them are sick, even the kitten who snuck a few bites out of the dogs bowl last night. I am never feeding them this brand again!!

  • We had a 4 month old Huskey named Nanook and we switched his food about 2 weeks ago from IAMS Puppy to Purina One Large Breed Puppy. We slowly mixed it in as suggested before officially going straight to Purina. The first day he vomited twice and had really runny poop. After that it went fine and I figured he had gotten used to the new food. He ate it for almost a week, then Monday morning he wouldn't touch it. My husband had just gone out of town on business so I wasn't sure if he just missed him and wasn't eating because of that (I had heard of that happening before). That evening I finally was able to get him to eat some dog treats but that was it. I also noticed that day that as soon as I put the Purina One in his food dish it was immediately swarmed by flies. I thought that was very odd as I only see random flies in my yard and as soon as I poured the food lots and I mean like at least 50 flies swarmed. Usually as soon as I put his food out he eats it so I never noticed this before. Anyway, by that evening I ended up throwing out the food that was in his bowl because he wasn't interested in eating it and the flies were still covering it.

Tuesday morning I refilled his food bowl and the flies came again, I immediately dumped it out and went to the store and bought a different brand of dog food. By that point it was too late, he refused to eat anything - the new food, the old food, dog treats, I even tried some human food. He wouldn't touch it. He wanted to be outside all day so I let him, it started to rain and I tried to get him to come in. He wouldn't come in. That evening I tried again multiple times and he still wouldn't come in. So he ended up sleeping outside that night.

Wednesday morning I went outside to check on him and couldn't find him anywhere. I looked around the yard and finally found him laying under my children's climber. I was calling his name and trying to get him out, but he wouldn't come. So I got down on the ground and looked inside the climber and his normally bright blue eyes were almost completely drained of color. I was mortified!! I immediately took him to the vet. On the way to the vet he was vomiting and peeing on himself. By the time we got to the vet his eyes were tinted yellow. As soon as the vet saw him he said he had jaundice... his eyes, inside of his ears and his gums were turning yellow. He ran a test for Parvo and took x-rays looking for an obstruction. The results of the x-rays showed his liver was almost 3 times the size it should have been, his liver was failing. The vet said this could be the result of consuming contaminated food.

They sent me home with 4 medications to give him, special food to force feed him with a syringe and IV's to give him twice a day. I did this for the rest of Wednesday and Thursday. Thursday his eyes were glowing florescent green. We made the decision that if a miracle did not happen overnight and we would have him put to sleep on Friday.

Nanook passed away early Friday morning in his sleep.

Prior to switching to Purina One Large Breed Puppy Nanook was in perfect condition without any health problems. The food change was the only thing that was the only change made to Nanook's enviroment. He had just been to the vet the Thursday prior for his checkup, his shots were up to date and he had no issues at that time. This all happened within a week from that day.

I have contacted Purina and am sending them a sample of the food for testing. I am also looking to third party testing after reading all the postings on this board, as I do not have alot of faith in getting much help from Purina on this matter.

I am sorry for all the other losses on this blog.

  • My golden retriever dog died yesterday after eating Kibbles & Bits Homestyle food, first time she ever had it, she was 6 yrs old and healthy and my daughters joy, the tears hurt.

  • My two year old Golden just started a new bag of Purina One Large Breed food. She has eaten the brand for months but the new bag was in a plastic type of bag rather than the paper one. She ate a bowl in the afternoon and had diarrhea at about 2am. I thought she might have eaten something in the yard and gave her kaopectate. She ate more of the food and even the kaopectate could not firm up her stool. I immediately took up the food and called Purina. They say the recipe has been changed and the new food has no yogurt in it which may have upset her stomach. I think they are full of bull and refuse to feed my dog anymore of Purina One food. What foods can we trust? I am considering making my own, but like the way the dry food keeps her teeth clean. Any ideas out there? Her stools are back to normal now that she is not eating Purina One.

  • I took my perfectly healthy Maltese mix, Dorrie, to the vet for her annual checkup on June 19, 2008; she was the picture of health according to her vet. During her visit, the vet suggesed that I switch her from soft food to crunchy food to help control tarter buildup. I finished up the food I had and began looking for a dry dog food. At the end of July 2008, I chose Purina One Natural Blends Chicken & Oat Meal Formula because the package indicated that it was natural and healthy for your dog.

She seemed to love it at first, but then I noticed her consumption slowed down. We also supplemented her diet with foods (vet approved) so I didn't think much about it at the time. I also found vomit in the house a couple of times and thought that she had eaten too much grass and gotten sick. Again, I didn't think much about it at the time. Then, on Sept 2, 2008 she began shivering as if she were in pain constantly. I took her to the vet to get some blood work done. They did a CBC, Blood screen minor (canine), a fecal examination - nothing looked irregular. They did not check liver or kidney function. The emptied her anal glands because she was very full and sent her home.

I called them back 3 days later because she had not stopped shivering and would not come when called which was highly unusual. I noticed also that she didn't seem to want to come inside, which was highly unusual because she was an inside dog. When I could get her to come in, she would mostly hide under my bed. On Sept 15, 2008, she was becoming increasinly lethargic and started vomiting foam and bile so I immediately took her to the vet, again. The vet said she had a blockage in her colon and needed surgery to massage the colon so she could pass it. The next day she had to be transferred to an emergency animal clinic for 24 hour critical care because her organs began shutting down.

Over the next two days, her health rapidly declined despite the fluids and antibiotics she was given. She developed peripheral edema, began vomiting blood, had bloody diarhea, could not move, her protein levels were critically low even after two plasma transfusions and she began having seizures. She died on Sept 18, 2008 at 1:30am.

I mentioned to her vet that I had just switched her food but since Purina was not mentioned in the recall last year, she did not think it was related. Neither her normal vet nor the emergency vet could figure out why she had gotten so sick and what the problem was. They kept asking me if she had gotten into any chemicals because her chemistry levels suggested that she had ingested a toxin. She had NO ACCESS to anything like that around our home or yard.

I didn't connect her food with her death until I started researching foods for our new puppy. That's when I found all of the information on Aflatoxicosis from dog foods containing corn. Apparently, a mold can grow on the corn and if not caught before it goes to the dog food manufacturing plant gets added to the dog food. This is lethal to dogs and results in liver failure. I have found a lab that will analyze (I kept the food) the food because I am now certain that this is what caused my dog's death.

  • Nov. 6, 2008.
My dog, a healthy beautiful Jack Russell of about 9 years, got incredibly sick last week. She has never been sick, and is the example of a healthy and happy dog...energetic, playful, etc...
Last week, she almost died. She became very sick. Fine in the morning before work, but after work when I got home, she had become incredibly lethargic, threw up her PURINA ONE SENIOR FORMULA, all over the floor, diareah, shakes, and also didn't want to come inside.
She had incredible pain in her abdomen!!! We have never seen her like this, so we brought her to the vet. X-rays, blood work, all normal. They did not check liver or kidneys either. I thought she may have eaten something outside that made her sick, but she was inside the entire day, and I found her sick when I got home from work in the evening. She lost weight, wouldn't eat or drink. The vet wanted me to keep her there for 2 days for observation, at a cost of $2500, and leave her sick in a cage. She has never been in a cage and I know she wouldn't have wanted to be there. I had to take her home, but only after the vet makes me sign a form saying it's against medical advice. It has been about a week, and she seems to be recovering. She is eating only cold cuts from the deli.(by hand) Won't touch the dog food. I hate to say it, but it was a new bag of dog food, and they just recently changed the material of the bag the food is in. It used to be in a more of a paper bag, now the food is in a plastic bag??? Whatever it was, almost killed my healthy dog. I truly feel it was the food. I love my dog like my child. Almost losing her devastated my wife and I. I truly feel it was the PURINA ONE SENIOR food. I also feed her Purina bacon strips snacks, and just tried a new purina snack, I don't remember the name now, but it was a gourmet dog treat by purina. Please contact me if you have similar problems. My email is neilmack510@hotmail.com. I don't trust these Corporate Foods anymore! I may just continue to feed my dog people food to keep her healthy! More needs to be done to ensure these foods are safe!!!!

My dog Chance had no side effects from eating this food which was purchase from the local Walmart. He actually improved in health and skin condition until I was forced to change food due the unavailability of his favorite.

Overnight she developed vommiting and diarrhea, became extremely lethargic etc... I took her to the vet and after over 1600.00 worth of tests we still dont know whats going on... Shes been on high dose antibiotics(Flagyl) for several weeks with great results, however as soon as she goes off the meds she has severe watery diarrhea. She just had a scope last week and we are awaiting the results. I just hope its not too late. She is the sweetest, most loving dog in the whole world.. It is breaking my heart to see her so sick.. I dont know if its the purina food or not but it all seems too coincidental to be anything else.. I will never feed her this food again after everyhting I've read tonight. I am so sorry to hear of all the lost pets over this irresponsibility.. It is horrible that they put this on the store shelves claiming it is good for dogs!!!

  • I just have a question for everyone that is saying they switched their dogs food and then overnight began to have diaherra and vomiting....did you SLOWLY transition the dogs as you are supposed to do (i.e. 1/4 new food to 3/4 old food for 3 to 4 days and then 1/2 and 1/2 for another 3 days and then 3/4 new food and 1/4 old food for 2 days and then a handful of old food and the rest new food for 1 or 2 days and then the switch is complete) or did you just instantly give your dogs the new food all at once and never giving their systems a chance to adjust. By not giving them the transition time, you can cause bloat and system failure in these dogs and it starts with the vomiting and diaherra. All dogs no matter size or age have to be transitioned into ANY new foods that are introduced to them. I am not saying Purina didn't have contaminated foods, cause I believe there are many many out there, and probably more that we don't know and haven't heard about as of yet, but you have to be responsible enough to know that you don't just take away the old food and start a new food without a transition period.

  • RESPONSE TO LAST POST DID YOU SWITCH FOOD SLOWLY MIXING IT? YES WE DID AND I HAVE HAD A CAT SICK FROM NOT SWITCHING GRADUALLY BEFORE IT IS NOTHING I REPEAT NOTHING LIKE MY ANIMALS SNOOPY AND ROCKY EXPERIENCED OR THESE OTHER PEOPLE. CHANGING FOOD WITHOUT MIXING MAY MAKE THEM A LITTLE SICK BUT IT WILL NOT MAKE THEM THROW UP MOLD SHUT THEIR ORGANS DOWN AND MAKE THEM DIE A SLOW MISERABLE DEATH THAT VETS CANNOT FIGURE OUT. I CANT BELIEVE ANYONE WOULD ASK THIS QUESTION AFTER READING MY OR OTHERS STORIES. THESE ANIMALS HAVE DIED SO PURINA WOULD NOT LOOSE ANY OF THEIR PROFIT. ROT IN HELL TO THE PERSON(S) WHO MADE THE DECISIONS THAT THEIR PROFIT WAS MORE IMPORTANT THAN MY SNOOPYS LIFE.

  • Our 10 yr.old husky. Princess was always in good health until all the dog food recalls. We where feeding her pedigree and alpo. First she started drinking alot of water and peeing on the floor. Then she just started to slow down. Had to put her to sleep. Now i wonder if the food killed her slowly.

  • we have two lab puppies about 3 months old and we have has them for 2 weeks. we have been feeding them purina puppy chow because that was what the previous owner feed them and now they are pooping blood, vomiting, not eating or drinking. is the dog food the reason for this? they were fine until about two days ago.
