My Dog is Cool

Wednesday, June 29, 2005

The Animal Protection Institute (API) has launched a new program and website called "My Dog is Cool", to increase public awareness on the dangers of leaving dogs locked up in cars.

The API will be distributing educational flyers, working with media, car manufacturers, and local governments, aiming to make this season a safe one for companion animals.

Some people leave their dog(s) inside their car while being away even for just a few minutes. During hotter days, the air inside of the car reaches triple digits in less than a minute, often reaching from 109° to 160°, enough to kill a dog.

The API has published a chart showing what the temperature inside of a car can reach, along with what the temperature is outside.

If you're going to take your dog with you in the car, always take the dog with you when you exit the car. Otherwise, leave the dog at home.

  • I leave my dogs in the car...with the ac on full blast while I run in to the store. I never take them with me unless I know I'll only be away from them for a few minutes. They're happy to get to go for a ride, and everyone stays safe.

  • my friend use to do the same thing, until yesterday the ac kicked off and both dogs died by the time he got back to them. anything can happen, someone can steal your car with the dogs or worse let the dogs out before taking the car.

it is just a tragic way to lose your dogs, it is safer to leave them at home, unless they can get out of the car and go with you.

  • If you can't take your dog with you, then don't put them in the car. Leave them inside a well-ac'ed home on a hot day, and even a normal day, and if it's not too bad and they have shade, water, and food nearby, you can leave them in the backyard. There is no reason to leave a pet in the back of a car, just as there is no reason to leave a young child in the car. Not even for 5 minutes. Anything can happen in the next few seconds.

  • Leaving dogs in the car is unusually cruel. People who wouldn't dream of leaving children in the car have no problem leaving their pets-it's sad and unfair. We all have the intention of leaving them "for a minute" however, we don't anticipate any setbacks and 15 minutes later, the dog is suffering. I love the site www.mydogiscool.com!! Please download their flyer and carry it with you to help educate the clueless.
