Ban on Pit Bulls gets scrapped in Georgia

Monday, July 18, 2005

An article in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that a legislator in Georgia, Earnest Williams, has agreed to drop his proposed statewide ban on pit bulls, and to instead target "vicious dogs".

The article went on to say that many dog owners were angered over the proposed ban, and cited examples of such persons and their arguments, suggesting that perhaps public pressure had something to do with it. However, the article also mentioned that the bill, House Bill 78, "went nowhere in this year's General Assembly session". Which leads me to believe that Williams was not personally swayed by the protestors, but that other legislators were not willing to touch the issue with a ten-foot pole.

Perhaps this proves the best way to attack breed-specific legislation is to sound off, and complain!

  • Let legislator Ernest Williams get his children, grandchildren, wife , or himself mauled orkilled like the six in Denver Col. on 11/06/2005and other parts of the U.S,. Ernest Williams would be first to bring an emerg session if he could to get the ban put on pit bulls in Ga.when it happens to his family or himself. Read articles in Scamento, Denver, over the U.S.

  • I am particularly happy that the ban was scrapped. I was terrified of dogs because of my childhood experiences and what I heard on the news and read in the papers. I decided to conquer this fear by getting my own Pit-pup. Because of me actually raising and owning my own American Pit Bull Terrier,(a descendant of a champion, if i may add) I now love dogs. It does not matter what breed of dog it is...it's all in how one raises their breed of dog. I have been bitten by a german sheppard, a little westy, and chased by a few muts in the past, but never a pit-bull.

  • I have to say this is disappointing news. Being a victim of a pit bull attack I can say whole-heartedly that this is a breed that should never have been bred in the first place. For any one interested in owning one I encourage you to do to accurate research of the breeds history and make sure you are physically capable of controlling a large aggressive dog.

  • Anyone that feels that any dog is aggressive by nature is completely wrong. ALL dogs are taught to be aggressive. It is the owners that need to be punished and given jail time for attacks that their dogs have committed. The dog should also be euthanized immediately. If a dog kills someone the owner should be charged with some kind of murder/manslaughter. But no breed should be banned. Just the owners need to be.

  • I'm a dog lover. I took in a pit bull.I can tell you that I truly believed that these dogs got a bad rap. I loved this dog and would have done anything to protect him. He had a great home. He was for the most part an inside dog. Well I dont care what any one says, these dogs are dangerous, I hve the scares and so does my neighbor to live with. My dog was NEVER miss treated. My dog was given the best love and care. These dogs are killers. Its not if a Pit attacks its only when a Pit will attack.

  • I work in an animal hospital and a pitbull was found by a vet i work for. I now own this dog. He doesnt have a mean bone in his body. He was a clinic dog for a year and was loose in our hospital with clients and there pets everyday. He never once showed any agression. Animals are not born mean they are trained to be mean. What needs to happen is the owner needs to be held responsible for what there animals do and there wouldnt be all this fighting and watchdog attacts.

  • I am glad this was scrapped. I am about to move back to Georgia and I will be bringing a pit bull mix with me. I can tell you that he is the most gentle thing ever. Cats can run him off of his food and he wont mind. I would hate for him to not come with me becuase he looks a bit like a pit! Neither this dog nor my other dog are allowed to run loose and are always on a leash. I dont think I should be punished because other people tech their dogs to be mean and then let them run loose.

I think they should be after vicious dogs not just one specific breed. And leash laws should be more strict. Dogs are taught to be mean it doesnt just happen. If people kept their dogs penned up this would not be such an issue!

  • They should at least be made to be kept on a leash or chain if they are outside a person's home. In Odum, Georgia, one owner (ex police chief, at that) just lets his run fancy free, and has no care in the world what the dog does. The dog has nearly attacked a child, has come at some people in the neighborhood, and has actually bitten me. This particular dog even chases after big trucks. He is a threat to this neighborhood. There is supposed to be a dog ordinance in this county (Wayne County, GA), but like just most anything else, it's not enforced.

  • I have always been against pitbulls because of what you hear about them. However, I have recently gotten a pitbull puppy. It is very sweet and so were it's parents. Being a dog owner of 8 dogs of all different breeds, I know it is not what kind of dog, but how the dog is raised whether it will be mean or not. I had a Blue-heeler that I raised from a puppy. I had to keep it in a pen because of the county we lived in. The little boy next door would pick at it when we were not outside. One day the boy came over when we had the dog out and the dog attacked him. I had to give the dog away after that. I never had a problem with the dog with anyone else, he just learned not to like that boy. If a dog is not socialized, both with people and other animals, it can get mean. That is any breed of dog, not just pitbulls.

  • In Georgia there is a vicious dog law, an animal nuisance law and a containment law. If there are people in your neighborhood that are letting their dogs do whatever they want, call animal control. You will do everyone a favor. It is the negectful dog owners that ruin it for all dogs.

  • well I just want to say that I used to love pitbulls been around them my whole life never believed any of the crazy stuff I saw or read UNTIL a coupel months ago my brother in laws pitbull attacked my dog and killed it right in front of my kids and and my husband and me, this was a pitbull that was raised in a very loving family ALL his life he is 3 years old and he got him when he was a puppy!! so all of you that say it is the owner you are wrong because that dog has a very good owner and treated him wonderful. and my dog was not bothering him or anything we were down in MY yard he came RUNNING down and attacked my MINATURE DACHSHUND I will never trust the breed again. So maybe people need to rethink this oh it is the owner crap

  • i would like to say to all of you who keep telling your anecdotal stories about how you either owned or knew someone who owned pitbulls who treated them wonderfully and gave them all the love and attention in the world and were surprised that they attacked someone or another dog, you are completely ignorant. it is often the dog owners who DO love and shower their dogs with so much attention and affection that create problem dogs. ANY dog, especially powerful breeds such as pitbulls, need knowledgeable owners who know how to properly discipline their dogs and keep them under control, which they need much more than love. dogs don't just attack out of nowhere, you are just missing the warning signs, and are likely reinforcing them with all the affection you are providing. dogs need a pack leader, not overabundant attention, and anyone who is putting their own needs first of having a companion to dote on rather than their dog's should not own one. give your dog attention only when it is being submissive, and make sure it gets EXERCISE. (and to the person who expressed surprise that a pitbull killed a miniature dachsund, he most likely saw it as prey, and this is probably because the owner did not control it or correct it properly after developing fixations on other small animals such as squirrels, etc, though I am sorry that happened. tendencies like that need to be nipped in the bud before they escalate.)

  • I was so worried I would have to move, because there is no way I'm giving up my dog.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 4:04 AM, July 24, 2007

  • Im sure that the majority of these dogs are very sweet and thats because you have raised them properly. We can't ensure that everyone raises their pit bulls properly! Therefore you have to ban all owners from getting pit bulls! I saw 2 of the most ignorant idiots with a pit bull this weekend. I can NOT trust these guys with the saftey of my 3 yr old at the park or other public place! So you can fine or jail them if my kid gets mauled? Dont you think it's too late at that point. Think people.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 12:53 PM, September 25, 2007

  • These dogs are born to be agressive, like a wild animal it is in their blood. You can treat them as sweetly as you want but can you trust them with your 2 or 3 year old? If you do then you are a fool and should and will go to jail if and when such a tragedy happens, that they end up mauling you or some child in your family or someone else's. Can you train a chihuaha or daschund or beagle to be agressive? I don't think so because it is not in their nature to be that way while the pitt can turn as nasty and dangerous as the tiger that turned on that famous trainer in Vegas, even though he weaned him from birth. Pitt bull owners are insecure and probably like to bully and be feared by others, period, it's the only idiotic reason to want to own one.

  • I have one and he's the biggest pansy ever. He'll never be mean. People that think all pit bulls are born aggressive are ignorant. Of course dogs are going to be mean if you breed them to fight and in most cases attacks occur because some idiot didn't put his damn dog on a leash, or put a muzzle on him if he's aggressive. Humans could prevent the majority of these attacks, but then again, how can you really expect some douchbag who fights dogs to be even a little bit responsible?

  • This whole deal is ridiculous. BSL is a door that we do not want to take. If we ban one breed it opens the door to ban others. This will allow all big dogs to be banned (and yes, that means your friendly little golden retriever, because they are on the list of "breeds that attack").

Laws on owning dogs should be enforced. Meaning that your dog should ALWAYS be on a leash in public...do not allow any unsupervised time with children and dogs. Making sure that gates are sturdy and the dog can't knock it down.

Also, animal owners need to be aware that you CANNOT baby your dogs. These are wild animals. They do feel emotion, but they need stability of you as a pack leader. Dressing them up and treating them like children should not be the way you raise your dogs. Exercise is a HUGE thing for dogs. It releases their tension and tires them out. Teach them to work for food....like going for a walk before you feed them.

I am a 5'5 woman who weighs about 118 pounds and I can control my two HUGE Perro de Presas. My male weighs 140+ pounds and my female weighs 115 pounds. I exercise them EVERYDAY individually so that I can spend one-on-one time with both of them. The neighbor kids are allowed to play with them as long as I am supervising them. They come and knock on my door so they can go in my backyard. My husband takes them to work sometimes (he is in the military) and they run around the office. They are inside dogs and they are obedient. I have snapped trained them to where all I have to do is snap and they come and lay by my feet. My dogs are the same breed that killed a woman in San Francisco and in Florida. The difference between me and those owners is that I am not training them to fight (San Francisco) and I do not baby my dogs like the woman in Florida who gave an entire room in her house to her dogs. This behavior allows aggression to pop up....the fighting dogs is obvious but even babying your dog is allowing aggression to happen. When they bark at you, growl, or snap when they are puppies and all you do is give them affection, you have just now let them get away with being aggressive and they think it is ok to then go and bite another human being.

Owners need to step up and take care of their dogs or stop owning dogs. Say no to any BSL in EVERY state! It is not the breed that is bad, it is the owner!

  • I am grateful that the state did not ban American Pit Bull Terriers. By nature they are not like some would say an aggressive dog toward fellow man. They are quiet the opposite and very loyal and loving animals. Of course you have breeders who raise them to be so called game and aggressive which is in no way the animals fault. Too many people blame an animal for actions that are due to irresponsible care and breeding. If a true breeder has a dog that acts aggressive toward humans he will have the animal put down his self. The pit has become this monster in the media because every back woods breeder saw they could make a quick buck off of breeding huge so called pits and raising them to be aggressive, so this blame should be placed on those breeders and those people punished not the breed. Its amazing to me how back yard breeders can no paper up any dog, and its considered a pure bred pit. Most of these so called American Bully dogs you can look at and tell by its short body frame and wide head that it was actually bred with an English Bulldog, but hey for $1000 a pup they will never let ya know that secret. Im sorry but no matter what someone tells you a true American Pitbull Terrier is not a low rider who is short and stocky. They have wieght averages, and medium hieght builds. So the true American Pitbull Terrier is indeed a dog who is blamed for anything when an attack happens, which no one can figure out that inbreeding or line breeding can cause mentally challenged dogs just like in humans, but hey its a quick buck at the sacrafice of a wonderful breed.

  • I am glad That it didn't pass, I have been showing pit bulls and doing agility and so on. I recently moved to GA, I worked at my two pervasively animal shelters in LA. Ya pit bulls are naturally and have been bred to fight since the 1800's but my dogs an other responsible pit bull owners will have to say that they are like another dog but you have to take a more safety caution with them. My dogs do not show any aggression at all because we have put time and money into our dogs making them a good ambassador for the breed. WE need to stop stupid people who fight them, not just kill and ban this wonderful breed.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 9:30 AM, May 11, 2008

  • First & Fore most "God" didn't create pitbulls. Man did, a pit is a man made breed. Next it's not the owner, it's the bloodlines. Dont buy a f**king Jeep dog & expect it not to kill some little MUTT. Buy you a blue or a AmStaff. Leave my damn dogs alone. If my dog bites you then its your fault. they are my dogs not yours so keep your f**king hands, feet & eyes off of them. Now if all you "pit owners" would follow in my steps the bad name would die down. BE A SELFISH A** HOLE WHEN IT COMES TO YOUR DOGS!!!

  • not that this will ever get read but you guys need to get a grip. other than the few ignorant fools on this site read something for once instead of going off about how your kids could be in trouble or your grandma getting run over by a reindeer. i own a pit she gets disciplined and she gets love. animal planet has even said that pits are the most willing to obey their owners. which is how they are bread to fight. they know their owner is happy with them. anyone that owns a pit will tell you when you get on to them they immediately get sad because they know their owner isnt happy. hate the deed not the breed. if anyone comes after my dog they will be shot. that includes government officials police and michael vick

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 12:58 AM, September 08, 2008

  • pits are the same as people. some are bad and some are good. you shouldn't punish all for the bad seeds i think it should be a case by case thing. I own a pit and i'd trust him anywhere with anyone. He's just a big baby. He is afraid of my cats...and stumps might I add. People are fools if they think that the breed should be banned. Just idiots. If that were the case with people we'd be banning a certain gender or race from certain states who have high crime rates with this certain race or gender.

By Blogger Jennifer, at 11:20 AM, October 03, 2008

  • It seems to me that it is possible people on both sides of this issue are being idiots. First of all no dogs should ever be "trusted" with any child alone any dog breed can hurt a child and most will if they are hurt or mistreated. Secondly pitbulls ARE aggressive by nature, toward other animals NOT human. However, any dog treated poorly by humans or not socialized properly will become human aggressive sooner or later. Pitbulls when trained properly and kept by knowledgable owners are not only "okay as pets" but they also make extremely intelligent and loyal pets. They have been used by law enforcement as drug sniffers and k-9 officers, and also used as rescue dogs and seeing eye dogs. A big problem is that people who do not treat them right and wont train them properly get a hold of these dogs and dont take good care of them, and do stupid things like leave them alone with their children. In conclusion a pitbull is no more aggressive toward humans than any other dog breed, they are just more powerful and thus more dangerous. I would never support the ban of such a loving companion but would support breed specific legislation that required anyone who was hoping to own a pitbull to take a course in obedience training and dog control.
