Likewise, not all pit bulls and Rottweilers are vicious killers. But if you got rid of them, you most certainly could reduce the number of human deaths in the jaws of dogs. We're just not sure it's worth the effort. Far more people are killed in accidents around the home every year than the paltry 150 deaths attributed to nasty dog breeds.I just find it interesting to see that newspapers like this one, and the Wisconsin State Journal are evaluating this rationally.
No K-9 is born vicious no matter what breed, someone has to make a K-9 vicious. The people are the ones whom should be made to control or an ordenence against owning a vicious animal.

Pitt bulls should not be banned in Utah. I agree that some dogs may be vicious but not all of them are, and to ban a dog by its breed is ignorant. Dogs aren't born vicious. Depending on how they are raised is what decides that. If the owner doesn't care enough to control their dog from birth, then they shouldn't be allowed to have dogs in the first place.
We actually have two pitts that are obedient and the worst they would ever do is probably lick someone to death. The reason being is because my boyfriend and I spend a good amount of time with them and we train them to be this way.
These dogs are our family and we treat them like one of our own. We take them both to pulling competitions, which basically teaches them to pull weight, as well as obedience and protection training. Notice here that I say training, meaning that they can and will learn when and when not to perform the intended commands. With all of this, the dog has a nice rounded education of what it's duty is. These are ALL efforts made by the owners.
Others that purchase pitts only have one purpose for them...which is to teach them to protect. This isn't an idea that I would recommend because rather than having a balanced knowledge of it's duty, all the dog thinks is that it needs to protect it's owner and it will do anything necessary to accomplish that duty. It's this type of ignorance that these owners show that turns the dog into a violent fighting maching because the dog is under the impression that everyone and everything is a threat to its owner.
Others purchase pitts for the sole intent of fighting the dogs. Yes this does bring in a good deal of money if the dog wins, but it's cruel and dangerous. The decision of making dog fighting illegal is the best decision and obviously was not made in haste. (Also note that this type of violence is taught to the dog by the owner..)
My main concern is that I have two pitts that I love very much, and to bann them because of their breed is ludacris. I intentionally spend every chance that I get with them to make them good, obedient dogs and to automatically assume that they are aggressive because of their breed is racism against dogs.

this is ridiculous what next banning people with brown eyes from certain cities because there are a high number of criminals with brown eyes? what are people suppose to do when they have a family pet they love and have cared for for years and they're banned from where they live, thats just not right. are they suppose to kill all of these dogs in these cities? just up and murder them,or do they have to take their whole family and move because there are a few dumbasses who dont think of a fair way to handle things?????!!! I love pits and i have never met one thats aggresive at all to people..ever!

Pitbulls are the best dogs ever. It is all in the training as with any breed. The media has made people scared of these dogs I am sure that there are other breeds biting people but it is not published. they just keep trying to take more of our rights away if my dogs aren't bothering anyone then they should leave them alone. Owners of any breed need to be responsible and not let the dog run loose. If you have never owned a pit bull you should have nothing to say until you have

I am a volunteer for the local humane society and I agree with all your comments. Two of the sweetest dogs awaiting a home are pitts. The reason they haven't gotten homes yet is neither dog likes cats and one really doesn't care for other dogs. Strangely enough the dogs to watch out for at this time in the kennel are a German Shepard and a black lab that have both bitten staff. I myself own a American Bulldog and she is gentle and loving but still a little hyper as she is still a young 13 months old.Pitts are getting a bad rap that just isn't fair as it has nothing to do with breeds and everything to do with how they are raised and socialized. -Frank

I'm new to Utah and I have a PittBull and she is my sons dog and the best dog ever so my question is she banned and if so what cities? All? I hope I do not have to get rid of her due to people not turly understanding her breed. Small dogs actulally bit more than large its just the large you hear about yes the bite might be worse, but I have to agree with most, dogs of any breed are not born mean.

I am against the owning of pit bulls. I dont necessarily agree with going to the extreme of banning them. I agree that all dogs can be vicious. But pit bulls are bred for fighting. A cross between a bulldog and a terrier, they crossed these to make a fighting dog. It's in there blood to attack other animals. They're not as knows to hurt people, they have of course, just like any other breed. But they are known to hurt other animals. This is why im against them. I would rather a human get attacked than an animal. Animals are much more helpless. And because so many people use them for pit fighting (there's nothing im more against than holding pit fights)but for the safety of my pets im completely againts them, and i get very defensive when i see one in our neighborhood. And i do agree that it's more of how the owner raises them. But the whole point is that it's in there blood to attack other animals.

i am a proud pitbull lover and owner. A teacup poodle is more likely to bit or attack than my pitbull. She acts like she is a lap dog and is afraid of her own shadow. Im sick and tired of hearing these people talk about how they are a fighting breed and how they are more likly to be aggressive. my friends pappion is more aggressive than my dog. My pitbull is the most loving dog you could ever meet. She is great with kids and great with other dogs and even the family cat. they sleep together and even play together. dont hate the breed hate the deed. unforuntatly michael vick isnt being burned, shot, drowned or hung like he did to his dogs..
