Skeeter the Narcoleptic Poodle

Thursday, October 20, 2005

Most dogs jump for joy and wag their tails when it's time for chow. But not Skeeter, he just goes to sleep.

Skeeter has narcolepsy.

It's extremely rare in dogs and has fascinated Skeeter's veterinarian, Walter Rowntree of Bannock Animal Medical Center in Pocatello, Idaho. The condition is so rare, Rowntree said, that there are no statistics available about its prevalence in dogs. The condition is triggered by excitement, and causes the victim to fall instantly into a deep sleep.

Skeeter's condition has gotten progressively worse. His owner has to feed him special food. And to avoid him from falling to sleep, she holds his hind legs up in the air, and rubs his neck.

  • Skeeter's use of drug Ritalin is old hat and out of date. The new drug for EDS is Modafinil, also know as Provigil and those who take it for Narcolepsy don't report the side affects Ritalin gives. When you first start taking this you might find you have a dry mouth, but this will pass. For Cataplexy there is Seroxat.

  • Why would they need to put him down?? He's not in pain...he just can't live a normal life. But I think a life with disability is better than no life at all; to say he should be put down is like saying that dog with no front legs should be put down, just because he has to work a little harder to function. Geez.
