Pit Bull Owners Must Become Vigilant

Monday, November 21, 2005

Dangerous Dog Hearing in McHenry County, IllinoisTonight, county board members in McHenry County, Illinois, a rural area north-west of Chicago, are discussing what to do in response to pit bull attacks last month.

It's a classic story. Some people get attacked by pit bulls, and it spurs lawmakers into discussing what to do about it.

I don't advocate breed bans, but I do advocate personal responsibility. If owners of dangerous dogs don't take responsibility in training, as well as restraining their dogs, they will lose the right to own their dogs. Cities like Denver, and Provinces like Ontario, have already demonstrated this.

I keep hearing pit bull owners crying, "don't punish the breed, punish the deed". But they don't offer any viable solutions. They just point their finger at the irresponsible owners, meanwhile, more people get attacked. If pit bull owners don't do something on their own, government will lose patience and do something about it.

Pit bull owners need to stop chanting their little catch-phrase, organize themselves, and go after the bad apples that are giving them all a bad name. As it stands now, we cannot rely on law enforcement to solve this issue for us. Hence, pit bull owners must become vigilant, or else watch their rights disappear.

Perhaps they should create a "Minuteman Project" to root out bad pit bull owners.

  • But even if decent law-abiding pit owners did report the activities of irresponsible pit owners, it's still going to come down to authorities to punish the violators. When people are training these dogs to fight and they're just getting a slap on the wrist, it's not going to do any good either. I'm not in favor of breed bans, I'm in favor of harsher punishment for people that don't know how to properly care for their pets and the conseqences that can follow.

  • Pit Bulls MUST be banned! These dogs are dangerous, a threat to society, and I am taking up the cause. I'm a pet owner of 2 dogs, I love animals, but vicious dogs must be dealt with!

  • Agreed. Vicious dogs must be dealt with. Banning "pit bulls" will not achieve that goal. A vicious dog can belong to any breed, or cross of a breed. There are something like 5 million dog bites across the country every year, and these are caused by many breeds. If pit bulls are banned, another breed will just be used by irresponsible owners. To crystal...you said you are a pet owner of 2 dogs...who's to say your dog won't be targeted next. No dog owner is safe from legislation. In fact, some politicians want to impose restrictions on all dog owners that include things like 100,000 in liability insurance per dog. One chicago alderman has on many occasions said he hates dog owners. If we open the door by allowing a breed ban in Chicago, who knows what else will be next. Don't assume that just because you don't have a pit bull, that this doesn't affect you. It's just a matter of time.

  • Harsher punishment for loose dogs is an excellent way for law makers to correct all bite attacks. Think about. Most people who are bit by dogs are bitten by dogs running loose. By putting a fine on your dog being loose in the neighbourhoods or streets is one way to correct this problem. It will encourage people to make sure their dogs are safely inside their property line with a very low chance of escaping (no place is escape-proof). Harsher punishments for dogs attacking people will help as well as people will think twice before getting what might appear as a "dangerous" breed and help limit and discourage irresponsible owners.

To all who believe that "pit bulls" should be banned, please understand what you are talking about. By nature, yes, these dogs have been used for dog fighting. So have Mastiffs and the Shar-Pei as well as almost every breed of dog. By buying from a responsible breeder, you can decrease the chance of the dog being "inheritably" bad tempered. Besides, I was attacked by a German Pointer (my fault, walked up behind it and tried to pet it) but I don't go around claiming they are all vicious. I actually loved one that used to live near me named Tex. My friend was attacked by two yellow labs which are considered to be the "ideal family pet." I own a chocolate one. My other friend was attacked by a German Shepherd and a Dalmatian who were loose. A kid I babysit for was attacked by a mutt tied outside a library (the owner was stupid too, kept syaing "well the last time he bit he..."). My goat was attacked by a Jack Russell last year who ripped his tail up. Notice none of these are considered "pit bulls."

As my teacher says, "Does that dog have teeth? Then he can bite." How true.

  • Pit Bulls shouldnt be banned. it isnt the breed of the dog its how it was treated. just like humans if u were abused youll have the urge to abuse back. its the same with any dogs. theres been studies that show over 30 breeds of dogs that attck or are dangerous, yet out of them only 5% are pit bulls actually more golden retievers and labs are the leading in fatal dog attacks.

  • do your homework crystal, it is ignorant bimbos such as yourself that fan the flames of this media anti pit bull hype, check out how many documented attacks from other breeds! Look for Rottweilers, Pinschers, German Shepards, and the like. There are a great many dogs biting and killing people other than the pit bull, but those breeds dont make headlines! Stupidity such as yours is what causes this problem, you're no better than the people abusing these animals

  • I think they should not ban them for a number of reasons including how it's not the dogs fault its the owners. Instead of banning pitbulls the should fine the owner big time if there is an attack by his/her dog. I also think they should be more careful on who theyh give the dogs to and need a special license to own or breed a pitbull. Once they (if they ever do) Ban pitbulls there will be different dog attacks from different dog breeds. These dogs dont deserve a life life that they deserve a family who loves and cares for them. 80% of abused dogs are pitbulls! 80%!!!!

  • I believe that any person that believes that pit-bulls should be banned should see them as puppies. If u could ban such a sweet animal then all breeds deserve to be banned. I own two pits and they are the most loving and caring dogs i have ever had. It's not the dog it's the way you raise the dog. I could train a Daschund to be viscious if i wanted to. Should we ban them too?. Crystal needs to think before she speaks. If someone even attempts to take my dogs from me they would be in for a hell of a lawsuit. "Punish the individual not the group." A black robs a store should we kill all blacks for it?

  • Crystal, have you ever taken the time to meet a well mannered pit? I have a pit(Gracie) and a chihuahua(Pinky). Judging by the "vicious dogs must be banned" mindset, why are you not trying to ban my Chihuahua? He barks at and tries to bite everyone that he first meets, the worst my pit ever does is almost knock you over from trying to say 'Hello'. Abusive parents raise abusive children, loving owners will raise a loving pit bull. Remember that old commercial: "You, alright! I learned it by watching you!" Aquired traits are just that...aquired. Learn about the bandwagon before you decide to hop on it.

  • The problem is that pitbulls are not bad dogs, it is the bad owners. It is ashamed that the whole breed gets a bad rap because of the few bad ones out there.

  • i have been the owner/operator of a apbt/staffy rehabilitation shelter for over 10 years. i have seen what owners have done to these so called 'dangerous dogs' if you knew the position these animals were in you would not be so inclined to say they were dangerous. the animal is not dangerous, its the sick twisted people that collect an torcher these things like rag dolls. if you have never owned a pit bull then you have no right to say whether or not you believe they are dangerous. did you know in many European dog show, the working dogs are stood in front of each other and if they dont show dog agression they get deducted points? how many huskies/poodles/rottys/mastiffs/great Danes/cattle dogs/sheep dogs ext... have distroyed dogs smaller then them and attached people over territory or out of fear or beaten in aggression? when i was in my teens i was running in my neighborhood when a collie jumped the fence in his yard and chases me down and nearly took my hand off i had to have almost 20 stitches and several skin graphs. does that mean collies should be banned? if you are ignorant of the behavior of the breed from personal experience as a pet owner (not the neighbor of, or the victim of and animal whos story you dont even know) then you have no right to speak out that they MUST be banned or that they are vicious. if you dont really know then dont say, you just sound stupid. and yes some of the dogs that come to us cannot be saved, and have to be put down, but not that many suprisionly, with alittle love most eventualy come around. thoughs that have to be put down are ALLWAYS fighters, and usualy so mangled and scared they couldnt live a normal life even if they could be rehabilitated.

  • I think part of the solution would lie in mandatory dog training classes or just sterilizing males except ones kept at breeders homes who are licensed and insured professionals. The choice is up to the owner. If a dog is checked by an animal behaviorist and shown to have no aggression than this would minimize attacks. If dogs are aggressive, they are trained or sterilized or neutered. My plan would cover all dogs and therefore all attacks and not discriminate or harm innocent animals and responsible owners. I think it's ridiculous to outlaw a breed when the vast majority are good dogs, and when there's so many other breeds that bite. Another thing is to educate people, who are mostly idiots and don't know anything about dogs. Politicians will do what idiots say, but if people are educated they will see this not a solution.

  • the whole banning pit bulls and other "dangerous breeds" is'nt good. these pets and just like humans, we dont ban blacks in certain states becuse they are "gangsters" just like that steriotype, there are white people that rap and are "gangsters" so why punnish the breed when a dog is made into a dangerous dog? it could be a terier or a poodle or any dog, even a labridor retreiver. The owner makes the dog.

  • I LOVE PITS IM LOOKING FORWARD TO OWNING ONE MYSELF I DONT THINK THEY ARE MEAN DOGS IT ALL DEPENDS ON THE OWNER

  • Let's be realistic. Yes, all dogs have an aggressive side. I have two min-pin mixes that snap a bit and I am working on helping them overcome this. Nevertheless, they are min-pin mixes and weigh less than 20 pounds. There is no way for them to kill a human being (besides a baby). They are not large enough, nor strong enough.

Pit bulls, while they are beautiful dogs that have the potential for gentility, are large, muscular and are designed to do damage. Their jaws lock on prey making it impossible for any person to open their mouth once they have clamped down on their prey. They are some of the strongest dogs out there.

Let me state, however, that I am NOT in favor of banning the breed. I have a few friends that own pit bulls and they are awesome dogs. Nevertheless, we need to admit that not all dogs are created "equal". Some dogs should require special licenses. Not only would this be good for society, licenses would also be great for the breed. People with a true love for the breed would jump through the hoops to own the dog while those who intend to own the dog as a status symbol would be deterred.

If you have to have licenses to own other types of animals, what is the big deal about a special license for a pit bull and other dogs known for the ability to kill not only small prey but also larger animals and people?

A special license might even be a temporary law. In 20 years or so the dog may be bred in a way in which it is much less aggressive.

Let me restate that I loooove pits. They are gorgeous, loyal, smart, and, when properly cared for, as sweet as any other dog. But these dogs have a physical structure unlike most other dogs and this must be taken into account.

To use an analogy, you don't need a license to own a can of mace but you do need one to own a handgun. We haven't banned guns yet.

  • Vicious dogs are a problem no matter what the breed. Pit Bulls are naturally aggressive though, they were bred that way, to fight. Another problem is that once they get a hold of you, you can't get them off. One clamped on the back of my dog's neck and it took a good samaritan with 5 smacks to the jaw with a hammer to get her to release. If it wasnt for that guy I am sure my dog would have been killed. This Pit Bull was 'rescued' from dog fighting. It jumped through an apartment window to get to us.
So now what about the ones that are agreesive towards people. I would rather have to fight off any other dog than a Pit Bull. Granted Rottweilers and other breeds can do alot of damage but I think Pit Bulls should be banned because they seem to be all too willing to attack unitl their victim is dead. I researched pit bull attacks after my attack and they are happening much too often and the fatality rate is really high. Higher than that of any other breed of dog. Obviously owners cant or wont control them so do away with them.

  • I am a mother of four young children ages 6, 4, 3, 16 months. I also own four pitbulls. I dont understand why Crystal is saying we should bann the breed. How syupid are you??? I have watched my children hit, kick, throw things at my dogs, even try to ride them like a horse! And I have never not once seen any sign of aggression from my dogs towards my children. I have raised these dogs since they were pups right along side my kids. I feel they are truly apart of my family; hell its just like having a furry kids to me. Yes I know theese dogs have a bad rep and I rally truly believe its not the dogs fault. If you beat your children into being scared do they not retaliate? Do they not become agressive towards others? Well offcousre they do! So why does that make the breed bad? Most of theese poor dogs are beaten and starved from the time they can walk. And its only pure nature to react like that, its called survival of the fittest. There is no one in the world that can convince me that my dogs are horrible beasts and that I should get rid of them. My parents, and both grandparents own small dogs and everytime we go to visit it is almost routine for my kids to be bitten and have to go to the emergency room for a stitch or two. I would far more expect to be bitten by a small little ankle biter rather then a large dog.And besides if we would say that pitbulls are bad what about Black people or the people from Iraq? Just because one Black man was to deal drugs and or shoot and kill someone does that mean that all Black people are drug dealing killers? And so one Iraqi citizen blew up our troops with a suicide bomb does that mean that all Iraqis will just be walking arund and blow us all up? I think not and the people who think like this are STUPID!!! And besides if we are to ban pitbulls well we might as well kiss all large breed dogs goodbye!!! So there you go Crystal, you are really an ignorrant person to think that pitbulls are bad dogs. You are the kind of person that should not own an animal of any sort or kind because of your ignorrance and prejudice. What would you recommend we ban next? I have a great suggestion; we should ban you Crystal and all the people out there like you!! Oh yes Crystal if you would like to comment back you may e-mail me at gabby2186@att.net. I would love to hear the stupid response you can come up with!

  • To the idiot with the pit bulls and the babies in the house. You are risking your baby's lives. You have introduced a hazard into their environment that could kill them easily and unpredictably. You are a fool. Not every pit bull kills a child. Not every gun kills a child. Not every open box of rat poison kills a child. But why would you ANY of these things where they MIGHT kill YOUR child? As I said, you are an idiot.
