Rabbit Flavored Dog Food

Tuesday, November 15, 2005

Rabbit flavored dog foodPurina Darling, a dog food brand that Nestle sells in Hungary, has a new rabbit variety. It's said to contain a minimum of four percent rabbit meat.

Just goes to show how paradigms differ in this world. Could you imagine the Hell that would be raised if a rabbit variety hit store shelves here?

It was only 30 years ago that rabbit was something we ate when my dad was in the mood. My mom would go to the butcher shop and buy rabbit. We'd have barbecued rabbit, broiled rabbit, and rabbit stew even. I remember my neighbors in San Diego had a rabbit pen with maybe 20 or so rabbits, and every other weekend they'd pull one out and make rabbit tacos. Not kidding you! This was a Mexican family, and back in Mexico rabbit is a cheap and plentiful food source.

Try that now, and they'll put you on Animal Precinct.

  • Maybe in some places you'd catch hell but here on the farm I raise and sell hundreds of pounds of rabbit meat yearly to dog and cat owners.

My customers include a lady whose dog was a brittle diabetic and unable to eat kibble without wildly swinging blood sugars diabetic coma, hypoglycemia, and frequent emergency trips to the vet. Since starting on whole ground rabbit her dog is symptom free and in the best health in years. She thanks me several times each time she comes to get more.

Another buyer is a cat owner on the national show circuit. She feeds ground rabbit exclusively. She believes cats are obligate carnivores and rabbits are the ultimate prey animal. Who am I to argue since her cats win big at the shows and she charges over one thousand dollars for her kittens.

  • Where I live, the county livestock show still judges meat rabbits and they get a lot of entries as well. Many kids give them away to homes or back to the breeder but some people actually do eat them. I've personally never had rabbit but I wouldn't say no if I was offered some.
