San Francisco Passes Mandatory Pit Bull Sterilization

Wednesday, November 16, 2005

Pit Bull SpayingAssociated Press reports the City of San Francisco passed new laws that require the spaying and neutering of pit bulls.

This all comes five months after a 12-year old boy was mauled by his family's pit bulls. The law seeks to punish all responsible pit bull owners for the mistakes of a few.

Of course sterilization has no effect in making a dog docile. The rationale, rather, is to reduce the number of dangerous dogs in society, and sterilization is a "humane" alternative to death. The goal is to make it harder for people to acquire pit bulls, by making them a rare commodity. Hence, the net effect is a pit bull ban.

It makes sense, considering San Francisco has managed to attract notoriety as the most dog friendly city in the country. Mayor Gavin Newsome had to actually get special legislation passed at the State level just so that he could enact a breed ban without actually enacting a breed ban. All in the name of protecting his city's precious status.

Why sure! Any city that's going to cut off my gonads, whether I like it or not, sounds pretty friendly to me!

Fine, if San Francisco wants to ban pit bulls let them. They've enacted so many other stupid laws, that we may as well take advantage of this new guinea pig for draconian measures. The country needs an example to remind itself why we fight for freedom and liberty, and we may as well make an example out of them.

  • It is a dumb law. It will only increase the cachet of pit bulls with the people who regularly violate laws anyway. Du,b law.

  • leave SF alone! so we passed a law to slow the growth of a bread of dog. at least we're not cramming our religion down your throat or starting senseless wars.

  • You say in the article that sterilization does nothing to make a dog more docile- WRONG!

98% of serious dog attacks involve unsterilized animals! You think that's just a coincidence.

The thing that's dumb about this law is that it's limited to pit bulls.

  • "Of course sterilization has no effect in making a dog docile."

This is erroneous. Spaying and neutering reduces aggression in all breeds, and reduces pit bull aggression significantly. And it prevents pet overpopulation! Everyone should spay or neuter their dogs and cats.

  • i think this is a perfectly logical solution as i know plenty of people who own pits only to breed them and sell them. these people do not breed pure bloodlines because they appreciate the animal, they breed them for the sake of a profit and do not take extra precautions to keep the animals trained well. leave the breeding up to the breeders. i was mauled when i was 5 and i still have many scars to remind me how an irresponsible owner can effect the life of another person.

  • This law is obsurd. Rescues and those who support spay/neuter alway say things like "Spaying and neutering does make an animal more mellow/friendlier" but NEVER list references (or at least not reliable or not extremely biased ones).

A recent report of the American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation reported significantly more behavioral problems in spayed and neutered bitches and dogs. The most commonly observed behavioral problem in spayed females was fearful behavior and the most common problem in males was AGGRESSION.

And check out the American Pit Bull Registry's website; under their spay/neuter section it says that a side-effect of spaying females is increased aggression (and they're FOR spaying/neutering).

This is also a bad idea, because we all know it is just an open-door for an all-out Pit Bull ban.

  • There's data that says when dogs are neutered they become less agressive. I heard there's never been a case of a fatal dog attack by a neutered dog.

  • while ignorance about a breed is not the fault of the politicians, responsibility is the owner's job of the breed. and educating people about the breed is part of that job. if that means that you have to show people why our dogs aren't to blame for some ignorant few who decide not to train and to do illegal things, we need to get the information out there and educate these people or ignorance will be the name of the game. and get people to help stop dog fighting and and help these dogs regain their renown as a family friend and child companion because that's where this dog belongs. that is what it's original breeding was intended for.

  • i think this is stupidity at its best. recently i have encountered three breeds that, the way society puts it,do not come close to the pit bull's aggression. im talking about (1) the stupid golden retriever. the dog belongs to the family of my g.f. and he has tried to bite me , my g.f., her sister, and thier mother, all in the same day. now should i go get a ban put on this aggressive dog? and (2) chihuahuas. my sister-in-law has one that just barks all day and clings to my pants if i walk near it. seeing that it has small jaws it really cant hurt me, but because of its aggression should it be baned as well. and finally i worked in a dog daycare i know that (3) yellow labs males are agressive. on three seperate occasions the lab hurt 2 puppies and actually cut a gash into the face of a pitbull we took care of. then while i was walking one of our bulldogs, another male yellow lab ,who was on a leash, ran draged its owner and cut a gash into the bulldogs neck. now lets not forget about the lady in france who got her face mulled by her own lab. but all the media talks about is hooray a succesfull face transplant. should the lab be baned as well. i bet that if it was a pittbull that did it there would be nonstop coverage of what the city is doing to ban em
but what do you expect from san francisco, eventually there will be a ban on heterosexuals and only homos will be allowed to live there, then no pits or people will reproduce there ever again.

  • Thats horrible that you have decided to punish a breed of dogs for the mistake of people. you say this a good idea i think its just cruel and intolerable punishment. you people are sick.

  • I think, after much reading and research, that this is a step in the right direction. But, it should be a law that ALL dogs be spayed/neutered. Dogs who are spayed/neutered are not only NOT contributing to the problem of overpopulation and will have fewer health risks, but they will also be less likely to wander off an owner's property, will not be under the influence of hormones, and will most likely be less agressive. Anyone who is curious about this topic should read Fatal Dog Attacks, by Karen Pryor. Not only has there never been a documented case in the US of a spayed or neutered dog killing a person, it also shows that any breed (inlucding Yorkies) have the potential to inflict injury or death.

  • This is one of the dumbest idea's i have ever heard. i am an owner of a pit bull. she is a sweetheart and wouldnt hurt a fly. she is a lap dog and its because i trained her that way. it is all how your treat a dog. the only reason pit bulls or any dog of that matter is mean is how it is raised. because a few scum bags or ghetto scum have mean pit bulls dont ruin the breed due to miss use of the dog. it sucks that if my one dog bites someone it is just a dog bit, but on the other hand if my pit bull were to bite someone they would kill it. so anyways stop the BS thoughts on these dogs and start training them correct, or for the people who cant afford the correct training then maybe provide this at a low or free cost. start there before bashing something you dont have or havent owned.
