The "Dog Lock" is billed by its manufacturer as the world's first "locking leash".
I just train my dog to bark like hell at strangers if I'm not nearby.

I have encountered way too many dogs that have bitten people when tied out in front of stores. If you can't trust people not to steal your dog, then maybe these are also the types of people that would hurt your dog.

have you ever thought that maybe the dog will get strangled or god even worse? people sometimes just need to have some logic and common sense and leave thier dog at home whe you wanna go shoppoing for gods sake

I've been using this leash for years and I love it. My dog is safe (won't bite) but we've had a number of dog thefts in our quiet neighborhood here in Portland, OR. My dog goes to the hardware store, supermarket, etc. and every time he does, I know he will be there when I come out. Keep an open mind. As a runner, sometimes just stopping for a fast bathroom break is a must and this leash makes it easy when running w/ a dog. Don't knock it unless you've tried it.

Might want to take a look at this before you knock the locking leash:

Brilliant product,i have an assistance dog that mid last year i had tethered outside a shop as they did not allow animals inside,i had been gone for only 5 mins and when i came out of the shop somebody had un-tethered my dog and had the leash in there hand and i guess they were going to walk away with him.
My dog ran over to me when i called out and i gave that would be dog napper a mighty good crack on the arm with my cane :)
I was givin a dog lock leash as a christmas present and have used it all the time since,i find it more comforting knowing it would probably be to much effort for a dog thief to bother with, and my dog is just that little bit safer, and thats all that really matters,..Brilliant invention.

I have one of these...
Sometimes when you're out with a dog you need to run in a store, such as if you (or the dog) is very thirsty. Now I can do this and have the peace of mind that my dog will be there when I come out again in 5 minutes!
It should be common sense not to leave your dog outside a store for an extended period, but if you're going to leave them for a few minutes outside this is an extra measure you can take to keep them safe...

For those of us who live in metro areas, where we walk and take the subway it could be a good idea to have a locking leash?
Sometimes on our walks, I want to run in a pick up a prescription, bottle of water or whatever.
I live in a safe suburb of Boston, but sometimes worry about someone walking off with my pup.

Saying "just leave the dog at home" is stupid and misses the point. This leash is supposed to be a solution to having to leave the dog at home when you otherwise would like to take the furry friend along. Taking the dog out in the world is very good for its mental and physical health. In Denver, people take their dogs everywhere. This leash makes perfect sense for places like this.

This seems like a great product, and a necessary one at that. We’re talking about the safety of our beautiful loyal life-companions here! It’s very important. People steal dogs to sell them for money, or just because they want to kidnap them, and who knows what will happen to your precious dog once it's in the thief's hands! This is a huge fear of mine. I would be so distraught to walk out of the store to find an empty space where my precious puppy once was. When I first got my dog I was scared someone would steal him so I actually bought a little lock, which I use to lock his correction chain around his neck and to his long leash. OBVIOUSLY not too tight because I love him very much and would never hurt him. Securing your dog outside is necessary, especially for people with cute puppies. I have heard of quite a few dogs in my neighbourhood being dog-napped. It is stupid to say ''maybe the dog will get strangled or god even worse'', or ''just leave the dog at home''. If there was danger of the dog getting strangled, the product would not be on the market and people would not use it. Whoever said that is ignorant. Imagine if your dog WAS stolen. The kind of person to steal a dog is most likely not the kind of person to treat a dog well, especially if they have stolen it just for money! I have heard of people putting out their cigarette's on puppies for ''gods sake'' (in the words of the over-dramatic blogger ‘’cyprus the great’’), so have a think about that before you hastily speculate about a dogs safety. People should take their dogs out MORE. Dogs are just as entitled to have interesting and stimulating lives as humans are. These people have just invented a product that helps people keep their dogs safe, something that I had to think up of myself for the safety of my own dog. We should all be thankful.
