Dog Owner Racks up Big Fines

Thursday, December 08, 2005

Danger Cocker SpanielThe Associated Press reports that Pamela McMahan gets fined $50.00 by her condominium association everytime she walks her mixed-breed cocker spaniel through the lobby to the outside.

That's because the association has a rule that dogs cannot be walked through the building, but must be carried. So far, she owes $1,600.00 in fines.

The association argues that dog leashes can cause other elderly people to trip and fall. McMahan says her dog weighs 20 pounds, and she has a back injury.

She's filing a complaint with the State Department of Fair Employment and Housing.

  • Americans with Disabilities Act might be a more potent arguement than housing fairness.

This sounds like a fancy place. Why doesn't one of the doormen come to her apartment and escort her and her dog downstairs and through the lobby. The doorman should be standing ready when they return.
