Dog Lock - Locking Leash
Friday, December 30, 2005

The "
Dog Lock" is billed by its manufacturer as the world's first "locking leash".
It allows a dog owner to chain their dog to a post, fence, or some other object out in public, with the comfort of knowing that no one else can unhook the dog and walk away with it.
One end of the leash is secured around a post, while the other end is wrapped around the dog's neck. You wrap it around the neck tight enough that it's head can't be pulled through the loop. The loop is then locked into place with a lock.
I suppose necessity is the mother of all invention. But it seems it would be better to leave the dog at home.

Bow Wow Breakfast Cereal for Dogs
Friday, December 30, 2005
Bow Wow Breakfast Cereal for Dogs is a new line of dog food intended for morning consumption. The company that makes it claims it's specifically formulated to meet a
dog's needs in the morning.
I'm not sure specifically what a dog's needs are in the morning. I find my dogs often need to poop in the morning, maybe that's what it means.
They have six varieties in all, including:
- Barkfast Squares
- Chompions
- Chewa-Bunga
- Fido Flakes
- Grrr-nola
- Pooch-Cheez

eBay Considers Sale of Dogs
Monday, December 19, 2005

eBay is thinking of allowing people to sell live animals on its website. They've
started a forum to gather public opinion.
We are hoping to launch a Live Pets Classified Format early next year. The listings would not be transactional and there would only be a listing fee. We are also looking into allowing non-profit animal shelters to list animals for adoption for free.
I would love to know what our active community members think about this new category. We are also considering Pet Services in this format as well - grooming, walking, etc..

LiveDeal Says Dogs Are Big Business
Thursday, December 15, 2005

LiveDeal
announced today that selling dogs is big business for them, noting that half of the top 24 search terms on its website are dog-related.
Live Deal is a classified ads website, where people can post ads, just like they do in a newspaper. In fact, if you visit their homepage, you'll see dogs right there at the top of the page.
To celebrate their success in pushing puppies across America, they're having a
Holiday Pet Parade, where pet owners submit their pet photos, and rate each other's photos.
The company says that pets are the fastest-growing category on their site, growing in excess of 50-70% month-over-month. "Dogs" and "puppies" are their top two most heavily searched keywords.
If you haven't guessed by now, what I'm getting at is the issue of puppy mills looks as if it's going to be running stonger than ever. While going through a list of puppies for sale in my area, I found a listing for a chihuahua,
showing a photo of a man, wearing a wife-beater, with tattoos all over, standing in front of a cage. He says the puppy was family raised. Aren't all puppy mills family operated? Who knows!
I'm sure there are many responsible breeders that rely on classified ads, and I certainly don't want to take anything away from them. If you plan to buy a puppy via classified ad, be inquisitive on its origins. Familiarize yourself with the breed, before you buy the puppy, so that you can make an intelligent evaluation. Puppy mills often produce unhealthy puppies, and you certainly don't want to bring home a puppy that's going to cost thousands in vet bills.
It's your money, so you make the best decision how and where you purchase a puppy.

Virginia Senator to Modify State's Dangerous Dog Laws
Thursday, December 15, 2005
An article published in the Virginian Pilot says that a State Senator in Virginia plans to submit legislation that will change the state's dangerous dog laws.
Senator R. Ed Houck (D) says that the state's existing laws put focus on the dangerous dog, instead of putting focus on the dog's owner.
Houck's proposal, which mentions no specific breeds, includes penalties for dog bites ranging from misdemeanors to felonies, depending on the severity of the injuries and whether it was the first time the animal bit someone.
If approved, the bill would force owners to list dogs declared dangerous on a state Internet registry and purchase insurance of at least $300,000.
Putting the focus on dog owners is a step in the right direction, unlike other states that punish dogs for bad behavior.
The part about creating an Internet registry of dangerous dogs is interesting. The report goes on to suggest that this list will contain dogs that have actually attacked other people and animals, and not just little nips on the back of a leg, but traumatic injuries and deaths.
Considering there are many gangs who own pit bulls and rottweilers and encourage them to sport aggressive behaviors, putting these owners into a public venue will make it easier for citizen watch groups to monitor them for repeat offenses.
Now, we'll see if the State of Virginia can do something to empower law enforcement to go after bad dog owners.

2006 is the Chinese Year of the Dog
Thursday, December 15, 2005

There's a saying that every dog will have its day. According to the Chinese, they'll also have their year.
2006 is the year of the dog, according to the
Chinese zodiac.
An
article published on CCTV.com says that retailers across China are stocking up on anything resembling a dog to cash in on New Year's gift giving.
Shops in Nanning, the capital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonumous Region, have already stocked their shelves for New Year's gift shoppers. Everything from cups and slippers and to handbags has doggy designs on it. Shop owners say as long as it's got a dog on it, it will sell.
It sounds like dogs are going to be good luck charms next year.

Panting Dogs are Laughing
Tuesday, December 13, 2005
An article published by All Headline News says that panting hard is a sign that dogs are happy.
Patricia Simonet, development and program coordinator for Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Service, started researching dog sounds in 2001, while a professor at Sierra Nevada College. Simonet and her students recorded dogs playing at a shelter. They isolated the growling, whining, barking and the panting sound she now calls laughter, reports The Associated Press.
I've come to understand this after having played with my two dogs. I'm sure others have too. Though not all panting is strictly laughter, there is still the exhaustive type of panting.

When you think of dog food, the word "Jelly" usually doesn't come to mind.
But actually, this brand of dog chow is made in Italy by

Anyways, this is a moist dog food targeted towards adult dogs, with varieties like Tuna, Chicken and Rice, and Sardines.

Dog Owner Racks up Big Fines
Thursday, December 08, 2005
The Associated Press reports that Pamela McMahan gets fined $50.00 by her condominium association everytime she walks her mixed-breed cocker spaniel through the lobby to the outside.
That's because the association has a rule that dogs cannot be walked through the building, but must be carried. So far, she owes $1,600.00 in fines.
The association argues that dog leashes can cause other elderly people to trip and fall. McMahan says her dog weighs 20 pounds, and she has a back injury.
She's filing a complaint with the State Department of Fair Employment and Housing.

Baked Dog Tags
Thursday, December 01, 2005

Anyone remember back in the 1970's seeing those commercials for "
Shrinky Dinks"? Those things you colored up, put into the oven, and they shrunk up into glossy colorful art?
Well,
FasTags basically copies the same idea, except they already come colored, and are designed as pet tags. You just need to put your dog's name and owner info on the tag. Then it's ready to bake.
Actually, I didn't realize that Shrinky Dinks are still around. They don't have products specifically marketed as pet tags, but they do have the
supplies available to accomplish the same thing.
If you have kids, it would probably be a great art project to create dog tags with Shrinky Dinks. Otherwise, if you want a baked dog tag really quick, FasTags is probably the choice.
