Dog Ordinance Limits Two Dogs Per Home

Monday, January 02, 2006

A two dog limit per household is probably the lowest limit I've heard of yet. This is apparently the case in Haddon Township, New Jersey, as evidenced in the township's municipal code, 104-14.

It seems that in a time when so many dogs need homes, government could do better to remove this limitation, with the caveat that dog owners must still abide by the township's existing laws on licensure, sanitation, and control.

I mean isn't that what the limitation law is trying to address anyways? To promote responsible dog ownership? Instead, the township expends money to provide for animal shelters, when it could save that money and let dog owners adopt as many dogs as they can reasonably take care of.

  • Could this be fought in court? Probably. Is anyone going to fight it there? No.

I agree, this kind of thing is oppressive and overkill, and harms efforts to place dogs with responsible dog owners.

Dog hoarders, those types who have 75 dogs and 300 cats, are a completely different issue. This isn’t about dog hoarding. This is about a bunch of busybodies and dog haters who have nothing better to do than to harass responsible dog owners.

Time for dog owners to fight back.

    We do vote, you know!

  • MY RESPONSE:

My name is William Ficek. I was forced to sell my home in Haddon Township because my fiance had a total of 5 English Cockers. The dogs were all beauifully groomed and trained show dogs. And some were used for therapy work. But nothing made a difference to the town council. They harrassed us until we had to sell. It ruined our relationship. I wound up in California, and my ex-fiance and her dogs are now living in peace and quiet somewhere in the state of New Jersey. I bought a house unaware of such an ordinance and was victimized by my real estate agent. The town council made us look and feel like criminals and for that I will never forget and forgive them. We lost bad . . . and it nearly cost me everything including my health. So, please beware of Haddon Township. They are corrupt and miserable people and I have nothing but anger and contempt for the unfair way that we were treated.

    Sincerely,
    William Ficek
