Camp Dogwood

Monday, February 13, 2006

Camp DogwoodDog Fancy magazine and DogFriendly.com have both named Chicago has the "dog-friendliest city" in the USA, much to the disappointment of city officials in San Francisco.

And Chicago is home to a dog-based campground called Camp Dogwood.

Camp Dogwood was created to provide an overnight dog camp experience for adults with dogs, reminiscent of summer sleep-away camp. The Dogwood motto describes the camp as a place "Where your dog can be a dog!"

The grounds are almost 200 acres of woods, open fields, and wetlands all situated on the private shores of Wooster Lake, in northern Illinois. Bunking together in lodges, cabins and tents, people and their pooches can spend the entire camp weekend bonding, playing and learning more about each other than they ever could at their local dog park.

The camp provides a wide range of activities for beginning, as well as experienced, dogs and handlers. Schedules include: agility, flyball, Frisbee, trick training,
behavior training, lure coursing, arts-n-crafts, photography, hiking, beach
games & parties, canine health & nutrition discussions, scrapbooking, dog and
human massage therapists, talent shows, a night time astronomy program, among others.

Camp Dogwood's 2006 schedule includes Spring Camp May 26-29, Fun Match Day on
September 9th, and Fall Camp October 6-9.

  • I just saw an Animal Planet show this week that profiled Camp Dogwood, and I have to say that although "camping out" doesn't appeal to me when it comes to vacations, this company really looked very interesting. I was very impressed to learn about the different types of activities dogs have available to them and it seems that the adults have a good time too; they have a chance to talk with others about their dogs and everyone seemed to be having a great time. This camp isn't appropriate for my current dog as she is afraid of other dogs, but I may actually consider this place for future pets.

  • Camp Dogwood is awesome... I've been to all three of their "Winter Woof Inn" camps which were held in the winter in hotels and they were tons of fun! (they did not have a winter camp this year unfortunately, and may not in the future)
The staff is all wonderful, and the activities are great. I already knew some of the staff members from other places such as the agility instructor who works at a local training facility, and I got to know several of the others and they were all very friendly and knowledgeable.

For dogs who may be shy or nervous around other dogs, they offer orange bandanas which tell other dog owners not to let their dogs run up at will (not that the dog is aggressive, just that it needs a little extra space...)
