Dogs Chasing Rabbits to Become Illegal

Tuesday, March 28, 2006

BeaglingThe State of California is considering a new law that will make it illegal for dogs to chase after rabbits.

The proposed bill, AB 2110, introduced by Assemblywoman Loni Hancock (D), outlaws the sport of "Live Field Coursing". However, it's written in such a way to apply to any situation where a dog owner is aware their dog is free to chase rabbits...
(b) For the purposes of this section, "live field coursing" includes any activity in which a dog is left untethered and allowed to track and pursue any rabbit, hare, or fox and that results in the injury or death of the rabbit, hare, or fox.
So, if you know your dog likes to chase rabbits in the backyard, and you allow it to do so, you will become a criminal if that rabbit is harmed, and may serve up to six months in a county jail, or a $1,000 fine.

The issue of Field Coursing became overblown when the ABC News affiliate in San Francisco ran a story that covered the sport. Instead of portraying it as a beagling competition for hounds and beagles, they used words like, "Blood Sport", "slow terrible death", and "some of the pictures might be disturbing".

They've managed to turn a centuries old sport into a "rabbit rights" issue.

  • Just because it is a "centuries old sport" does not make it humane.

  • This just in: Cats chasing mice to become illegal. Why do rabbits have rights that mice don't have.

This is the stupidest thing I have ever heard.

  • You do know that the dogs generally don't catch the rabbits right? I have a beagle who has a rabbit friend who waits to be chased. Get a life people. Its called nature.

  • You got to be kidding me. I would love to throw that person into a tiger's cage and see if they can control the tiger's natrual instincts.

Come on people, you got to be kidding me. Dogs are doing what their instincts are telling them to do. What next tigers and snakes aren't allowed to hunt to eat?

  • This shouldn't be a law! What if a dog is chasing a rabbit and the rabbit hurts itself by tripping or running into something it's not the dog's fault, rabbit's are so fast they might've not seen what hit them.
Then it would be worng topunish the owner. What about the dog's instincts or rights?!?California should listen to other states like New York or somewhere!

  • Some of these comments are nuts! Whats this sh*te about putting the person who forced this bill into a tiger cage? Crazy! Wild dogs chase rabbits for food. Our domestic dogs are fed at home (or suppose to be). They should be shown that chasing and harming other living creatures is wrong. It is our responsibilty as dog owners to ensure the safety of all who share its world, people, ferrets, bunnies, goldfish, you name it. If Fido wants to play "chase" get him a frisby. Get ya butt off the couch and play with him and leave the wildlife alone.
