If you see them doing this behavior while moving there paws in a pumping motion the are in a pacification mode steming from nursing from there mother it probably helps them to relax

My Old English Sheepdog puppy has a stuffed animal she nurses on. I don't see anything wrong with it. It's cute.

My German Shepard sucks on the heads of stuffed animals and kneeds his paws while sucking. He tends to do it when he is in relaxation mode; either when we are all relaxing at home, or when he feels frustrated by something , like when my husband plays with our other dog. It is his way of feeling safe and relaxed. I think it is fine unless it is seriously affecting their health.

I have a 3 year 110# black lab that has nursed on a bright orange stuffed football since 4 months of age. He cannot go to bed a night until it is located. He was from a litter of 12. I just thought he didn't get enough time with Mom due to the large litter size. Otherwise he is normal and well adjusted.

I have a 1 year old black lab that has been sucking the face off his stuffed mouse since he was 3 months old. He's very gentle to this mouse and uses it only to suck on, about 2-3 times per day, when the whole family is together and just relaxing. I just hope that Wal-Mart will continue to have an ample supply of his "baby"
as he wears them out after 6 months. It's very cute to see.

I'm so glad I found this because my weimaraner just started doing this. She is 3 years old, I went on vacation and my mom watched her for me. My mom said she was so sad, after a couple days she gave her this stuffed dog and she began sucking on it. When I saw her with it, it seemed like it was soothing her so I bought her one for home. Now she has one at grama's and at home. I didn't think anything was wrong with it but I thought I would check anyway. Thanks for your help and it is awfully cute.

Hi:
I have a 145# Bullmastiff that also sucks on the heads of her stuffed animals since I brought her home. Glad to find we are not alone. I brought her home 2 wks sooner- at 6 wks old & thought it might have been a little soon as my other Bullmastiff wasn't allowed to leave until 8 wks. I read somewhere it is a separation anxiety. She looks so funny being so large doing this~ carrying around a 1 foot long kitty cat. People look at me bewildered. She is a such a sweet loving big BABY!! That goes for both of them~as they are both "babied" with TLC!

I was so happy to find this post. I am a dog trainer, work in a shelter, and have asked everyone I know - they've all only seen this in cats. My 6 month old lab sucks the face of his stuffed duck, while gripping it repeatedly with his outstretched paws. I can hear the sucking sound, and sometimes he goes to sleep and falls over while he's doing it. He is a well adjusted pup, with an older dog "sibling" in the house. Was taken from a small litter of 5 at 8 weeks old. I can't imagine that he didn't have enough nursing time, as he was by far the largest pup in this small litter.

Hi, thanks for the input on this. I think my 11 month old Corgi may be exhibiting this behavior, however, she doesn't suck or kneed her paws. As I write she is laying on her side, asleep, with one of her two stuffed toys, which she holds in her mouth for sometime. She seems to do this for relaxation and security. Any other ideas welcome.
