Pet Sitting is a Fast Growing Industry

Saturday, March 04, 2006

Holly HuntimerThe Arizona Republic reports that the pet sitting industry is experiencing a boom.

The report features the business of Holly Huntimer, who started her pet sitting business while attending college.
"When I started I thought I'd be the little neighborhood pet-sitter, nothing big, nothing extraordinary," Huntimer said. "Business started snowballing. And then I put the ad on the Internet." In May, Huntimer had to hire three employees to help with the growing demand...
She now has 100 active clients.

Holly's business offers several services including pet-sitting, house-sitting, dog walking, overnight stays, and on-site poop-scooping.

The report goes on to say that Pet Sitters International, a trade organization for pet sitting businesses, has grown from 300 members in 1994 to about 7,400 members today.

It sounds like a business idea that's frought with money to be had.

  • This whole pet sitting concept is really taking off. We took our dog on a ski trip to Aspen last year, realizing there were no doggie day care facilities (we didn't think it would be a big deal). After the first day, I searched for someone to walk the dog, at that time there was only one girl in town with such a service and the prices were attorney high (and she was Booked)! Anyway, keep it up girl, you are in a RED HOT business. Be fair and Square and you'll be one of the lucky people.. the few who enjoy what they do! Good luck.

  • I started my pet sitting business in December of 2005, and of course, I am impatient, but it has been kind of slow. I love to hear from existing pet sitters about their experience, it is very encouraging! Thanks for sharing and keep up the great work!

  • With such a booming market, I quit my job as an overworked, underpaid database programmer to start a pet sitting business. Look for me soon at www.ontheballpetcare.com! Another big market that's been around longer is obedience training. I'm about to complete my own training with Animal Behavior College and I'll be able to offer pet care and training!

  • By the way- I charge $20 a visit, and am seriously considering going up to $25- with gas prices and car maintenance, I don't see a very large profit margin.
