Pets Abandoned Due to Bird Flu Scare

Sunday, March 05, 2006

The AP reports that some pet owners owners in France have abandoned their animals due to the Asian Bird Flu worries.

France's food safety had ordered all residents in affected areas to keep their cats indoors and their dogs on leashes to avoid spreading the virus. This led to a panic, causing some people to get rid of their pets in an attempt to protect themselves.

While the Bird Flu is deadly to birds, it's been reported that people and other animals have died from it too. They can definitely harbor the virus and the spread it around, however. Earlier in the week, it was reported that a cat in Germany died from the Bird Flu.

When the Bird Flu hits hard here in the USA, will Americans abandon their dogs and cats too?

  • OH MY GOD,This is like leaving your children if they get sick.People need to be more aware that the pets they get are a life long family member.Would you leave a family member if they were sick?

  • I never abandon my dog.
I'll be sure he's indoor and have no contact with birds or other animals around.

  • you know it never occurs to people to help animals out. Take for instance how many times people see dogs running down a street, how many of you actually stop and help a lost dog? But I bet if you saw a toddler running out in the middle of the street everyone would stop and help find the child's home. Lets face it people do not put much value on pets lives, it is a shame. I do not have any kids so my dog is my child and I stop every time I see a lost dog, try to get it into my car and bring it to a shelter or call the number on it's tags to try to find the owner. They will never find there way home and will end up being killed by a car, can you imagine getting hit by a car, how painful that would be? Point is society needs to be responsible "if you get a pet" take care of it through good and bad, do not toss your responsibility to the side!!!!! Veterinary technician 11 years experience :)

  • I'm sure that our governments will seize and kill off our dogs en masse if the disease starts infecting our pets... Look what they did with the mass cullings in Europe with the hoof and mouth disease.
