Purina Beneful Prepared Meals

Tuesday, March 21, 2006

Purina Beneful Prepared MealsPurina Beneful is now available in a new variety called "Prepared Meals".

The photos make it look pretty good, even for people. In fact, the photos make it look like something you might find at a Chinese buffet.

I remember when I was a kid, we'd joke about about poor folks having to eat cans of dog food. Today, dog food is looking better all the time! Not too long ago we bought some dog cookies that looked just like Oreos, except these were peanut butter. The ingredients list looked just like that on a real box of Oreos, and smelled just as good. I was tempted.

Take a look at the container these come in. I bet people would buy it just to get the reuseable containers.

  • I've been hoping for this. Both of my dogs love Beneful. I wonder if they'll come out with a "light" version? We'll definitely be picking some up.

  • Awesome, my dog is going to love these!

  • Why would you feed your dog something that is 78% water, lacks sufficient protein and uses inferior protein sources like "meat by-products", contains "added color" which dogs can't even see, contains "artificial flavors", and contains wheat and soy which are known canine allergens? Feed this and expect your dog to become lazy and lethargic with dry itchy skin, loose stools, and bad teeth.

    Seconded. That stuff is crap.

  • The funny thing is that I put this kind of crap in me everytime I go to a McDonalds or a Chinese buffet, and I still love it.

By Blogger Steve, at 9:43 AM, March 22, 2006

  • No doubt, McNuggets w/ Hot Mustard would be my dead-man-walking last meal! When I travel with my two dogs, the only thing they'll eat on the road is McDonald's hamburgers. Not bad as a treat but not meant to be a regular part of a healthy diet, for humans or animals.

I'm surprised with the number of dogs in America that the fast food giants haven't added doggie delights to the menu. You're right Steve, it's all the same.

  • That's kinda what I was getting at Chris. There's dog food these days that looks good enough for me to eat, considering the kind of junk food I put into myself already. And those cookies that I mentioned, looking like Oreos, and smelling just as sweet.

As it is now, I feed my dogs leftovers, and we'll buy them a box of chicken nuggets, just for them. The lines between dog food and human food have blurred.

By Blogger Steve, at 10:56 AM, March 22, 2006

  • Understood and agreed.

This is directed to the other readers who are planning to try Beneful.

While the lines between have blurred, as you say, between human and pet food (thanks to marketing efforts like Beneful's) the fundamental difference between us remains.

Dog food that "looks good enough for me to eat" is designed to do just that: appeal to the human eye because that's how we identify what whets our appetite. If I saw this on a plate without seeing the label, I would think it was human food - though my chicken stew looks better!

But dogs don't use their eyes, they use their incredible sense of smell to identify food.

    < soapbox >
So I don't trust companies that appeal to my senses instead of (a) my ability to discern what constitutes healthy nutrition and (b) my responsibility to provide the best for my mutts.

  • Wow, Im really glad you guys put it that way. Youre right, it appeals to us, not to the dogs!! I wouldve gotten it too, but now I totally understand what youre saying, that this stuff is just garbage. I'll stick to feeding my dog real chicken...

  • Dogs can't see the colors? My dog picks the red ones out first, then the green ones, then the yellow and brown ones... unless there's a difference in flavor between them, which I seriously doubt, it would seem that my dog does indeed see those colors.

  • For those of you all up into "natural" stuff, fine, this isn't for you.

But for those of you who are already feeding canned dog food, I have to say, TRY IT. I did and I don't regret a moment of it. I've never seen my dog so happy! And, I feel good about feeding this to my dog because I can actually see the peas, carrots, rice, barley and other real ingredients in the food. The images on www.beneful.com actually live up to the product - it looks that good! I've tried other products that say they have vegetables in them and I've maybe seen 1 or 2 carrot slivers and a nasty looking pea. But that's not the case with Beneful Prepared Meals, I can see every pea, carrot, pasta, spinach..every ingredient. I'm hooked no matter what the heck you all say. I've had dogs live to 18, 19 and I proudly feed them "crap" from a bag and now, Beneful Prepared Meals. To each his own...

  • My dog is a VERY picky eater. I used to feed her Science Diet because of its nutritional values but nowadays she won't touch it. I want to stick to more nutritious brands but she doesn't seem to like it. She would only eat Cesar. I bought Beneful for her the other day and she LOVEs it, but now that I hear it's not that healthy I don't know what to do.

  • My 12 year old female Papillon has decided that she no longer likes Nutro. So after a day and a 1/2 of her not eating ANYTHING, I thought I'd try the Beneful Prepared Meals. The way she gobbled it down, you'd think she hadn't eaten in a year! I continue to mix the Nutro canned in with the Beneful Prepared Meals so she gets more protein, but I'm just happy that she's actually eating something.

  • My dog Sophie can eat any thing that has corn or chicken in it this has been good for her. Do you have the dry dog food with out corn or chicken in it?

  • Chris,
Just so you know, Nestle Purina Has 2 kennels housing many dogs of all ages. There is nothing Nestle Purina puts on the market that is not healthy for dogs or cats for that matter. Years of research & feeding trials, to prove the nutrition value of their products.
Yes, they also provide "eye" appeal to there products as well to entice the consumer but that does not mean there is no nutritional value to there products.
If I were you I would continue feeding your pet McDonalds & see how long your pet will live without serious health issues.

  • I hope those of you who are purists with their dog food are just as choosy with the food they feed their family and themselves. I recently lost my 14 year old Scottie to liver disease. My remaining two terriers went into a funk and refused to eat anything from Merricks to Natural Choice. When I finally tried Beneful, both dogs ate as if they had never been feed before. Two months of Beneful later, my dogs are very enthusiatic about their food - for the first time ever. Good going Purina! Just lower the price a bit!

  • I got a sample of this and my dogs love it, the beef stew one smells like the same thing I cook and it is so nutrious. I have always been a firm believer in dry high priced dog food with just the right ingredients, but I now am totally sold on supplementing the evening meal with this. It truly looks and smells good enough for human consumption. With this i do not even have to give my dogs their evening snack they like this better. It also seems to be extrememly nutricious. When i tried to feed mmy dogs moist food before they got the runs but they had regular stool with this. My only problem is it isnot available in Michigan. This is how i found this article because I am searching to get this for them online. I highly reccommend you to at least try this it is awesome.

  • i've been feeding my 2 year old shih tzu for the last 5 months now and he has not skipped a meal yet. The only downside is that the white hairs (he is mostly white) under his chin have changed to brown. The added colors or dye on the food might have caused this. Shampoos and monthly visit to the groomer doesn't seem to work. I'm currently looking on changing his diet completely.

  • my little chihuahua had a seizure and was quite ill and could't eat. So i got her some prepared meals and she started to eat again a very little at a time now after two weeks she is eating well and running around and looking great. I continue to feed her those meals. She looks better now than in a very long time.

  • you know that's the funniest thing that I heard that Stuff made by purina is crap. I've actually seen vets recommend that stuff.
The three top dog foods I see vets recommend is
    Science Diet
    Purina (Beneful)
    Pedigree

I personally like those brands too because they all had their way of keeping my pet very healthy. Before I had to give her away.
My grandma now feeds her dog Beneful and I've seen positive results come out of those creatures. I do beleive in the affects.
Funny you mention the 'good enough to eat thing.' Back then when my great grandpa used to do deliveries he ran across the Alpo company sending them their stuff as needed. During that time he was on their lunch break and to his shock he saw men going into the factory carrying hamburber buns. *shrugs* So I guess if it's good for the people then it's good for the animal

  • If you have a picky eater, try Flint River Ranch. My dog would not touch any type of dog food other than Cesars until I ordered FRR. The vets I've talked to rave about the stuff and all of the ones I know recommend Nutro and FRR above any commercial brand dog food. A long life is one thing, a long healthy & happy life is another.

  • We feed our Kerry Blue a mix of Flint River Ranch and Beneful preparded meals and we have never seen her so happy about meal time. When we travel, she is content to eat the Beneful prepared meals right out of the plastic container- it is really convienient. What a difference in the appearance of the product- usually canned food does look (and smell) like crap- you can see the veggies, rice and good stuff in these meals.
    - Thank You Purina- but please lower the price-

  • My 6 year old Yorky ate Iams lean dry food for 5 years - and hated every meal. Switched him over to Beneful and he whines while it's being scooped. What a difference. He's healthy, happy and has the best coat ever. No kidding. And now I'm glad he's eating the dry, not canned food!

  • I know that a lot of people believe that this food is designed to appeal more to people than to the dogs eating it, but I cannot deny that my dog LOVES this food! Yes, it is packaged in eye catching tubs that look more like something a person would want to eat than a dog, but that is because we are buying the product...obviously not our dogs. I was crate training Kai and he seemed to lose his appetite. I tried a lot of different types of food, but he would not have any interest in most of the dry food I tried to feed him. But, he will eat these in a matter of minutes. I would recommend this product to anyone that has had a hard time getting their dog to eat. They will love it! The only downside that I found was that his urine tended to be a little more yellow than normal. Try this product! Your dog will love it...and that is more important than worrying about whether or not this product is designed to appeal to our senses rather than our dog's. Bottom line, if it helped my dog gain weight and get back to his normal healthy self, who cares if it comes in a pretty package?

  • I have been buying these Beneful prepared meals for about the last year and I can not find them anymore. I live in Odessa Texas

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 5:20 AM, May 21, 2007

  • Chris is right- Beneful is garbage. Just because your dog likes it is not enough reason to feed this junk.
Kids like candy and we like chocolate, but that doesn't mean we should eat that stuff every single meal day in and day out!

Our dogs have no choice in what they eat- we have to make those choices for them and it's only fair to feed them healthfuly.

Beneful is low quality garbage that is neither beneficial nor healthy and is marketed to appeal to us, and seasoned and flavored to appeal to dogs, so we'll keep buying it. It's making Nestle Purina rich!
The ingredients they use in this "food" are mostly cheap grain and worthless meat scraps of unknown origin- it costs next to nothing to make and earns lots of profit!!
Do you know what meat-by-products are?! If you did, I guarantee you wouldn't feed this to your pets.

Do them a favor and learn how to read an ingredients label and feed them healthy foods. Even if you yourself are a junk food junkie- is it fair to your pet to force them to eat unhealthfully too? It's not like they have a choice in the matter and of course they like the flavor of junk food- who doesn't?
Do you want them to live long healthy lives, or what?

By Blogger starsenchis, at 12:55 PM, June 08, 2007

  • I too find Beneful to be one of the poorest quality foods I have looked into in a long time. There is no reason a dog should have over 4 different sources of corn. Dogs don't need corn in your diet, it just ends up a big heaping pile in your yard.

Also, dogs "love" beneful so much because of the amount of SUGAR and SORBITOL in it. Talk about a hyperactive dog with bad teeth, and poor long term health.

Did anyone notice the "animal digest" in Beneful? It's the leftover tissue of random animals that they don't specify. It could be anything. Rats, horses, goats, pigs... and it's all the fun tasty stuff like hair, teeth, horns, feathers. Yummy!

And others are right, the silly shapes and colors are for owners appeal. Dogs don't care.

  • My dogs have eaten the Beneful dry for years and now the prepared meals are available in my area. I mix them with the dry for my 14 yr. old and she loves it.

  • Be prepared to hear alot of nasty things about this dog food. Most of the people that complain about it ,are overweight or voteing for Hilary Clinton while hugging on trees on the "Left Coast".

This food is great ! Both of my dogs love it and are very happy since we started feeding it to them regularly. I mix it with dry food and my dogs cant help but chow down .
I totaly recommend Beneful , and back it up all the way.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 11:18 AM, March 19, 2008

  • Your dogs may love it, but it doesn't change the fact that dogs need a lot more protein than this food offers. This should be given as an occasional treat, in addition to a good quality high protein food, such as Beneful dry.
(You must be a Obama supporter, who believes everything you hear!)

  • It is amazing to me why people continue to make stupidity out as some type of a virtue. There are obvious differences among the multitude of dog foods on the market today but many of the comments I have read are from people who simply have problems getting their dogs to eat.

My 13-1/2 year old Belgian Sheepdog has been through two 25 week tours of chemo therapy over the last three years for lymphoma. One of the side effects of treatment is nausea and loss of appetite. I have periodically tried ALL of the so-called holistic and natural dog food and most of the time he won't eat or even touch them. I have even cooked for him with mixed results.

He eats Beneful Prepared Meals without problems and enjoys every bit. His stools are fine and since he has a blood test before every chemo treatment, he's had nearly 50 of them over the last 3 years. I see no differences between his tests pre-Beneful and now. His oncologist things Beneful is fine.

Without these prepared meals he would be dead. Despite what he is going through he's happy, playful and doing great.

For all you idiot critics who run-down people who are just trying to coax their dogs to eat, get a grip.
