World's Strangest Sounding Dogs

Wednesday, March 29, 2006

World's Strangest Sounding DogsPeter Grier thinks he has a pair of the strangest sounding dogs around.

The writer for Christian Science Monitor has two beagles, each emitting a unique howl. When the two start barking, it makes for an odd stereophonic canterwalling.

Annabelle is 14, a purebred beagle, has a rough sounding howl resulting from a nail that had been lodged in her throat.

Peanut is 11, a beagle mix, had lost some teeth resulting is a whistling overtone in her howl, and increased volume to the side.

So how do the two sound?
"Well, I've been hearing that sound," she said. "My husband and I, we didn't know what it was. We thought it might be ... geese!"

There's a vision - a flock of hounds flying south in a "V."
I think beagles have the coolest howl. Wish there was an audio file of these two dogs.
