Police Dog Dies After Being Left In Car

Friday, May 19, 2006

Stories of dogs dying after being left inside a hot car are everywhere. But it's not often you hear about a police dog dying in the same manner.

Officer John Baker (where have we heard that name before?) left his canine partner Atilla in the car, which is actually a normal procedure.

Cars used by K-9 officers have a temperature monitor that activates the siren and rolls down windows if the car's temperature gets above 85 degrees. But the device wasn't activated in Baker's car.

The officer was suspended, and The Humane Society has begun a criminal investigation.

  • What kind of police officer would do that?

  • He should be prosicuted just like anyone else and should never be allowed to have another dog!

  • People like that make me sick. We should be able to expect better from the men that are supposed to be protecting us. What was he doing? Sitting in a coffee shop on his fat butt? And why where the safty devices not on? He needs to spend some time in a cell thinking about his poor dog and what he did to it!!!

  • In my state they give people tickets for leaving their dogs in cars,Which is a great idea. But you would think a police officer would know better. And I think he should be sent to jail as anyone else would be for doing such a stupid thing.Or better yet why not take his doughnut eating butt and lock him in a hot car and leave him to die.

  • That's the problem with relying on 'idiot' lights/sensors (like the oil light etc in a vehicle). What ever happened to good old common sense?

  • If it is common procedure to leave police dogs in cars and the dog was killed because of "equipment failure" why was the officer suspended?

Police dogs dying from heat after being left in cars does not seem to be that uncommon... In fact there are several listed on this page:
    http://members.dandy.net/~lulu//mem2004-24.html
and probably many more if you go through the other pages of the site... Very sad.
(note: may want to turn sound off before going to that page, the music is loud and annoying.)

  • Here in Dallas a police officer did the same thing...said he "forgot the dog was in the car"...HELLO, how can you forget the dog was in the car...the first thing I do when me and my dogs get home from a ride is get them some fresh water or make sure they potty before coming in!
They did not charge the asshole either...I guess cuz he was a sorry ass cop.
