Woman Fined For Drunk Chihuahua

Monday, May 22, 2006

A woman in McHenry County, Illinois was fined $100.00 for having a drunk chihuahua.

Diane Marcotte claims she had left a glass of wine in the car, and that Chico must have gotten into it. The dog started having seizures, so she took it to the vet.

Interestingly, local police testified in court that they smelled alcohol on Chico's breath. Can you visualize cops holding a chihuahua's mouth up to their nose? "Yup, this dog's been hitting the bottle!".

The judge ordered placed the dog with new owners. He also fined her with child endangerment, and fined her for driving under the influence of alcohol. All because her dog got into some wine, and tried to take it to a vet.

Perhaps she would have walked to the vet, and let the dog die on the way over. At least, she wouldn't have gotten busted on the latter two charges.

Everyone makes mistakes. It doesn't solve anything to crucify people for them.

Perhaps she shouldn't have had an open item of liquor in her car while driving? Perhaps she should have a clue. It could've killed her dog, chihuahuas aren't very big. It wouldn't take much.

Really, who has a glass of wine while cleaning the car? I call BS.

  • Dogs are a responsibility and you deserve to be punished if your dog accesses alcohol and has seizures. Veterinarians are legally obligated to report animal abuse, this was stupidity and abuse.

  • Oh, come on... Drunk dogs are hilarious. Drunk dogs on beer, that is. Wine and hard liquor are very bad for dogs, but beer is fine. I have a Dachshund and if anyone leaves an opened beer around the dog goes strait to it. Dogs like the yeast in beer. I feed my dog beer everytime I drink some. It's no big deal. Can you even call it dog abuse??? This woman did in fact make the mistake of having alcohol in her vehicle, but is it really her fault that the dog just so happen to drink some? If you leave a plate of food alone for 5 seconds the dog will eat it, whats to say that if you leave a drink alone for 5 seconds that the dog wont? Who's to say anything. It happened, and I think it wasn't the womans fault. Dogs don't know better, and accidents happen all the time. You know what that's called? It's called life. It happens every day, and somethings we just can't control. I say yea to the lady with the wine. I'm sorry her dog died though. I also think it is absolutely ridiculous that she was fined for

  • I bet the dog wont drink wine again. My dog drinks alcohol, but has never gone into convultions. Chihuahuas are small dogs though. Too bad for her that she was fined. Oh well.

  • People must take more precautions when a pet owner. Even your own home can contain dangerous things. Stop and really look around and think about what may happen. Better safe than sorry. The lady should have done that and the poor litle Chi. wouldn't have drank anything it shouldn't have and she would still own her sweet lil' one. Some have to learn the hard way, I guess.

  • Read the story and learn the woman failed sobriety tests to pick up her kids from elementary school... people make mistakes, sure but this lady has problems. It's not just about the dog anymore.

  • This lady should have 1.not had wine in her car.Who does? 2.been careful, and have closely watched her dog. 3.known that any liquor drunk by a dog, specially a chihuahua who's tiny,is bad and CAN be harmful.I think this proves she wasn't the "ideal" dog owner. This case makes her seem careless and irresponsible. As for the charges, she got what she deserved. It was fair to file charges on her.It might teach her to be more responsible and caring.
