When Should a Dog Be Allowed to Bite?

Tuesday, June 06, 2006

Sam Basso, who blogs Poochmaster, brought up an interesting point about when a dog should be allowed to bite.

Read his article here.

The question, therefore is, at what point does a dog cross the line and become a dangerous dog?

That is, what makes one particular beagle more dangerous than another beagle? If a dog bit someone, does that mean there is something abnormal with that dog? Or, does it mean that it was simply doing what came natural to it?

If a dog bit someone, should it be confiscated and euthanized?

  • Read the article! I agree 1000%..What are dogs for?? If they can't protect themselves or their owners-we are simply reducing them to nothing more than a little pussy cat!! Of course they must be well trained and under control! That's the owners responsibility! If you walk aroiund a horse and it kicks you does that make it vicious? If a cat scratches someone do they kill it? That's what they do-and dogs bite. Everything has its own means of protection.

  • I think the article is good also. I am also lucky that I live in Edmonton, Alberta I guess because our bylaws stipulate that if a dog chases, causes property damage, or bites and has been 'provoked' to do so the owner will not be at fault .... of course the understanding, though not stated, is within reason!!
So if my dog is being teased at the gate by someone and he gets out because he is so aggitated and then jumps up and barks and perhaps even bites someone then he is not going to be deemed a 'restricted dog'.
I do think though that fear biters are workable with experienced owners that are willing to work with their pets every day... Of course I think that ALL dogs should be worked with every day, it does not have to be a whole 'obedience session' but brush ups and practice that is fun and practical. Besides they love the attention!!
