St. Petersburg, FL May Soon Allow Dogs at Restaurants

Monday, July 10, 2006

When Florida's Governor, Jeb Bush, signed into law a bill that paves the way for dog to join their owners at the State's restaurants, St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Baker said he wants his city to become the first.

The law doesn't allow dogs into restaurants, rather, it gives local governments the freedom to make such laws. However, the law restricts dogs from eating inside the restaurant; they can only dine in outdoor areas.

The law also requires each restaurant to obtain a permit.

  • Dogs should be allowed inside resaurants in the United States. I've seen them in restaurants in many european countries where it is allowed. It depends on the dog. As long as they are well behaved it should be permitted. The restaurants could have pet friendly sections. I'd rather be at a table near a dog than a disorderly child.

  • Although I am the proud owner of 2 wonderful dogs and I voted for Jeb as governor, I am against allowing dogs so close to restaurants that servers can pet them, much less inside any restaurant, please read on... Scenario: A dog just got his/her flea treatment and the dog goes to a restaurant and gets touched by a server who "forgets" to wash up before serving a guest their food, now this nasty chemical is all over their plate and they ingest some of it which causes them to get sick or worse, perhaps cancer sets in. This is only one example of the many hazards we can expect to be exposed to if restaurants allow close proximity for animals at dining establishments.
