World's Strangest Sounding Dogs
Wednesday, March 29, 2006

Peter Grier
thinks he has a pair of the strangest sounding dogs around.
The writer for Christian Science Monitor has two beagles, each emitting a unique howl. When the two start barking, it makes for an odd stereophonic canterwalling.
Annabelle is 14, a purebred beagle, has a rough sounding howl resulting from a nail that had been lodged in her throat.
Peanut is 11, a beagle mix, had lost some teeth resulting is a whistling overtone in her howl, and increased volume to the side.
So how do the two sound?
"Well, I've been hearing that sound," she said. "My husband and I, we didn't know what it was. We thought it might be ... geese!"
There's a vision - a flock of hounds flying south in a "V."
I think beagles have the coolest howl. Wish there was an audio file of these two dogs.

Diamonds Made From Dog Hair
Wednesday, March 29, 2006

A company in Russia called
New Age Diamonds is offering to make a cultured diamond using hair from your dog.
With a handful of Missy's hair (approx 1 gram's worth), they combine it with carbon and run it through their HPHT (high pressure, high temperature) machine. The result is a real, actual, diamond, with your dog's DNA inside.
The thing is that they don't offer clear diamonds, only yellow, green, and red ones.
The company also does diamonds made from human hair and cremated ashes too. Expect to shell out a minimum of $2,000.

QuickFinder Claw Cutter
Tuesday, March 28, 2006
QuickFinder was probably the most innovative new product on display at the Global Pet Expo last week in San Diego.
It's a claw cutter that detects the Quick in an animal's claw, and alerts you where and where not to cut. This way you avoid cutting blood vessels and nerve bundles.
The photo on the right is of Tripp Manheimer, inventor of the QuickFinder.
There are three colored lights on the handle: red for "don't cut", yellow for "caution", and green for "safe to cut". It's guaranteed to eliminate cutting worries, and works on dogs, cats, and bird, of all claw density types, even black claws.
It's manufactured by a company called MiracleCorp, which makes other grooming products, but won't be available until August of 2006.

Driving Licenses for Dogs
Tuesday, March 28, 2006
In Vienna, Austria, they
implemented a new licensing program for dogs called, "Driving Licenses for Dogs".
It's not a license to drive cars, but an "obedience license" for dog owners, demonstrating their ability to handle their pet in public.
It's not a mandatory license, but just something to let Vienese dog owners boast about.
It comes with a written test, and an "driving test", where a dog owner takes its dog out for a walk and demonstrates dog handling etiquette, like muzzling a dog, and picking up poop.
The license is actually more of a test to address a big problem in Vienna with dog poop laying on city sidewalks. Thousands of people signed a petition to force the city to find a solution to the 5 to 10 tons of dog excrement produced daily.

Buying Purebred Dogs From Mexico
Tuesday, March 28, 2006
The
National Animal Interest Alliance, a group that supports responsible animal and pet welfare, issued an
audio release warning people about buying purebred dogs from Mexico.
This made me wonder if there is an increase in the number of Americans buying foreign-bred puppies. If there is, why?
Is it because prices are cheaper? Well, I'm not convinced prices are cheaper. These dogs are not purchased in Mexico, rather they are shipped to the United States, and sold through a variety of outlets, anywhere from newspapers, to pet shops, to online classifieds.
I tend to believe it's the result of so many federal and state laws that make it difficult for American breeders to do business.
At the heart of the issue are puppy mills. Instead of government spending money to bust the puppy millers, they instead resort to cheaper solutions, by enacting "budget neutral" laws that make it difficult for breeders to operate a business.
The problem with this is that puppy mills don't abide by laws. However, ethical breeders do, and it's making it difficult for them to stay in business, and has reduced the supply of purebred puppies in America. Hence, these laws have created a growing dog breeding industry in Mexico.
The end result of these laws is that there are still more puppies being bred throughout the world than ever before, but they are being bred more sickly.
If our government spends more time and money busting the puppy mills, instead of enacting more restrictive laws, then there won't be a demand for foreign-born puppies. Let the ethical breeders flourish in America, and we won't have to worry about disease stricken Mexican puppies.

Dogs Chasing Rabbits to Become Illegal
Tuesday, March 28, 2006

The State of California is considering a new law that will make it illegal for dogs to chase after rabbits.
The proposed bill,
AB 2110, introduced by Assemblywoman Loni Hancock (D), outlaws the sport of "Live Field Coursing". However, it's written in such a way to apply to any situation where a dog owner is aware their dog is free to chase rabbits...
(b) For the purposes of this section, "live field coursing" includes any activity in which a dog is left untethered and allowed to track and pursue any rabbit, hare, or fox and that results in the injury or death of the rabbit, hare, or fox.
So, if you know your dog likes to chase rabbits in the backyard, and you allow it to do so, you will become a criminal if that rabbit is harmed, and may serve up to six months in a county jail, or a $1,000 fine.
The issue of Field Coursing became overblown when the ABC News affiliate in San Francisco
ran a story that covered the sport. Instead of portraying it as a beagling competition for hounds and beagles, they used words like, "Blood Sport", "slow terrible death", and "some of the pictures might be disturbing".
They've managed to turn a centuries old sport into a "rabbit rights" issue.

More Information on the MicroID Collar
Monday, March 27, 2006
Last week I wrote about the
MicroID Collar, the winning product idea in the IdeaFetch contest. I mentioned that the idea was not new, and that the
Top Tag Pet ID predated it.
I was contacted by Amanda Leesburg, who handles communications with
PetSafe, the company that hosted the IdeaFetch contest. She pointed out the differences between the two products, which justified the MicroID Collar as being an innovative new pet product idea.
The biggest difference is that MicroID's flash card is embedded into the collar, while Top Tag's flash card hangs from the collar. The embedded collar concept was tested with consumers, which they preferred because it avoided potential problems with the tag getting caught in heater grates and fences.
Moreover, the MicroID Collar has a toll-free number on the collar, in case a finder can't use the USB jack.

31% of Americans Prefer to Sleep With a Pet
Sunday, March 26, 2006

Carpenter Co., which makes pillows and mattress pads,
released the findings of its "Sleep Better" survey.
Among the findings is that 31% of Americans who own a pet, allow their pet to sleep in bed with them.
The Sleep Better survey was conducted to find out the leading causes of poor sleep, hence this finding was presented as a reason why people don't sleep well.
Carpenter Co. got together with Dr. Michael Breus, a sleep expert, to comment on the findings, which he replied...
Co-sleeping is certainly a preference and there is some data to suggest it helps promote a better relationship, but co-sleeping with an animal is not really a good idea. Sleeping with pets in the bed can cause an increase in allergen exposure, frequent awakenings due to movement, and in some cases fleas!
I suppose its a valid argument, but if pet owners are already allowing their pets to sleep with them, it's probably because it's not a bother to them.
We ran some articles on this subject before:

Is This the World's Ugliest Dog?
Sunday, March 26, 2006
Dane Andrew of Sunnyvale, CA, has put out a
press release touting his Chinese Crested, named Rascal, is the reigning "World's Ugliest Dog".

Rascal, The only living and competing Ugly dog to hold the coveted "Ring of Champions" title which makes him the current "World's Ugliest Dog". Originally won the contest at the Sonoma Marin Fair.
Andrews says Rascal does not get shaved, and is naturally hairless except for his mohawk and some hair on his tail and feet. He also has no teeth, and is not able to keep his tongue in his mouth.
Rascal comes from a dynasty of "Ugly Doy Royalty", with his Mom, Grandmother, and Grandfather all having held the title of "The World's Ugliest Dog". Rascal's Grandfather "Chi Chi" is in the Guinness Book of World Records for winning the most ugly dog contests and was undefeated with 7 ugly dog wins. Andrews goes on to say that Rascal may be the only dog, along with his Mom "Mai Tai" to receive a Mayoral proclamation.
I dunno. Personally, I think Rascal is more cute than he is ugly. What do you folks think? Is Rascal ugly, or he is cute?

Does Your Dog Blog?
Wednesday, March 22, 2006

My-Dog-Blog, a new blog host for dog owners.
Dog blogging is nothing new, with several pooches already posting their photos and daily journal entries on places like Blogger, Live Journal, Type Pad and others. The difference with My-Dog-Blog, is that they offer dog-themed templates, and the domain name will probably help with search engine referrals.
My-Dog-Blog offers all the usual slate of features, templates, RSS feeds, mailing lists, photo albums, create avatars, and so on. It also supports "friends lists", with an option to share special content to your most trusted friends.
Kinda like the MySpace.com for doggies.

Purina Beneful Prepared Meals
Tuesday, March 21, 2006

Purina Beneful is now available in a new variety called "
Prepared Meals".
The photos make it look pretty good, even for people. In fact, the photos make it look like something you might find at a Chinese buffet.
I remember when I was a kid, we'd joke about about poor folks having to eat cans of dog food. Today, dog food is looking better all the time! Not too long ago we bought some dog cookies that looked just like Oreos, except these were peanut butter. The ingredients list looked just like that on a real box of Oreos, and smelled just as good. I was tempted.
Take a look at the container these come in. I bet people would buy it just to get the reuseable containers.

Dogs Wow Dogs
Thursday, March 16, 2006

"
Dogs Wow Dogs" is the name of a DVD that teaches very young children about family life with a dog.
After reviewing some clips, the content is such that it's probably for kids aged 2 to 5 years, and is packed with enough songs and laughter that it'll keep their attention.
The programming uses a doggie sock puppet named "Stately" who looks and sounds like he could be related to the sock puppet mascot of Pets.com. He has this cat sidekick named Remix, and the two of them dance and sing their way through a variety of canine topics ranging from safety, feeding, grooming, bathing, playing, and a bunch of others.
It's produced by Larry Kay, who apparently has had a long history in children's media, having done extensive work with Disney and The Muppets.
The DVD contains two 30 minute programs.

Pets Abandoned Due to Bird Flu Scare
Sunday, March 05, 2006
The AP
reports that some pet owners owners in France have abandoned their animals due to the Asian Bird Flu worries.
France's food safety had ordered all residents in affected areas to keep their cats indoors and their dogs on leashes to avoid spreading the virus. This led to a panic, causing some people to get rid of their pets in an attempt to protect themselves.
While the Bird Flu is deadly to birds, it's been reported that people and other animals have died from it too. They can definitely harbor the virus and the spread it around, however. Earlier in the week, it was reported that a cat in Germany died from the Bird Flu.
When the Bird Flu hits hard here in the USA, will Americans abandon their dogs and cats too?

Pet Sitting is a Fast Growing Industry
Saturday, March 04, 2006

The Arizona Republic
reports that the pet sitting industry is experiencing a boom.
The report features the business of
Holly Huntimer, who started her pet sitting business while attending college.
"When I started I thought I'd be the little neighborhood pet-sitter, nothing big, nothing extraordinary," Huntimer said. "Business started snowballing. And then I put the ad on the Internet." In May, Huntimer had to hire three employees to help with the growing demand...
She now has 100 active clients.
Holly's business offers several services including pet-sitting, house-sitting, dog walking, overnight stays, and on-site poop-scooping.
The report goes on to say that Pet Sitters International, a trade organization for pet sitting businesses, has grown from 300 members in 1994 to about 7,400 members today.
It sounds like a business idea that's frought with money to be had.

eBay Stops Dog Fur Sales
Saturday, March 04, 2006

The Daily Mirror, a UK based newspaper,
reports that eBay removed a Korean dog fur coat from its site yesterday. The newspaper credits itself for the decision.
A concerned animal lover saw the coat on eBay, and was alarmed by its description:
Described as being "in great condition", it had an asking price of £50 and appeared alongside a photo with the heading: "Fur coat - Korean dog".
The Daily Mirror was contacted, and the paper contacted eBay about it. The sale of dog fur is permissible in the UK.
A spokeswoman for PETA claimed that, "People who choose to wear fur of any kind should be aware that they are directly responsible for a great deal of unnecessary animal suffering."
However, the Daily Mirror says otherwise. The paper notes that the fur is likely to have been a by-product of the Korean meat trade. About two million dogs are killed every year for dog meat in Korean and sold to 6,000 restaurants.
This is
exactly what I
commented in an earlier article about the Chinese dog fur industry, that it's actually a by-product of the dog meat industry. You can't stop the dog fur industry without first stopping the dog meat industry. And you cannot stop the dog meat industry without first addressing cultural norms, and poverty.
The consumption of dog meat came about due to harsh realities of the lower class society. So much of Chinese and Korean families have been in the lower class, that eating dog meat has since become engrained into the culture. Even if we could ship them all free beef, they'd still eat dog because of it being part of their culture.
PETA, on the other hand, would prefer you to believe that these families are all psychotically deranged, and is using that picture to keep donations flowing their way. They'll get the donations, but they'll never change Asian culture.

Ear Protection for Flying Dogs
Thursday, March 02, 2006
Mutt Muffs offers hearing protection for dogs that fly with their owners in light aircraft.
Aviators know how loud it gets in the cockpit, and if it gets too loud for them, it gets even louder for dogs who have a keener sense of hearing than humans.
Mutt Muffs are a patent-pending invention of pet owner Michele McGuire who noticed her dog Cooper acted a bit frazzled when flying with her in her Cessna. After spending money on engineers and doggie treats, she came up with the right design, and now Cooper enjoys flying as much as Michele.

Wednesday, March 01, 2006

Aspen Pet Products Inc., which makes the Booda brand of dog chews, is rolling out two
new dental chews hoping to grab some market share while Greenies is under fire.
The "Pup-RRR-mint Sticks" and "Muttz-RRR-ella Sticks", are dual-layer dog chews with a taste, shape, hardness, and dental health benefits that it hopes dog owners will applaude.
Pup-RRR-mint Sticks are fortified with dill, parsley, and mint to freshen breath, clean teeth and provide great taste, while Muttz-RRR-ella Sticks, are made with a real-cheese center. Aspen's own "independent taste tests" show that dogs prefer Muttz-RRR-ella Sticks 3:1 and Pup-RRR-mint Sticks 2:1 over Greenies.
And since digestibility is what's putting Greenies out to pasture, Aspen says that their new sticks are made from an extrusion process, formed in much the same way as pasta, and are more easily broken down and digested. Moreover, the sticks have a uniform shape such that the ends are not larger, which is the cause of many intestinal blockage cases.
Pup-RRR-mint Sticks and Muttz-RRR-ella Sticks are available at PetSmart and PETCO stores.
