Man Fights Alligator for Dog

Tuesday, May 30, 2006

Michael Rubin has some hefty huevos rancheros.

He was out walking his two dogs, a Golden Retriever and a Border Collie, when the Golden, a six month old puppy, ran ahead to the edge of a pond.

That's when an alligator came up out of the pond, snatched it up, and went back into water.

So what does Rubin do? He jumps in, wrestles the alligator, starts throwing punches at its noggin, and pries the dog out of its jaws. I suppose as long as a gator has something in its mouth it ain't going to bite.

Apparently, the puppy is doing good, though I don't think she'll be retrieving stuff out of the water anymore.

World Kitchens Beef Jerky

Tuesday, May 30, 2006

This is actually a brand of jerky for people.

So what's this doing on a dog blog? Well, it happens to be awful jerky for people, but probably great stuff for dogs. And it's not all that expensive.

I picked up this bag of World Kitchens Beef Jerky at the supermarket yesterday, because as the blogger I am, I need plenty of animal flesh to keep my brain and fingers working.

This particular brand contained a whole pound (16oz) of jerky in one bag, compared to the 4oz you get from other brands. Better yet, it costs only $9.99, compared to $5.99 for the smaller 4oz competitors. A great bargain I thought.

But right away I knew something was wrong immediately after popping a piece into my mouth. It just didn't taste right, it tasted kinda stale. I checked the expiration date, but it said it was good until "09/20/07", so it appeared to be fresh.

After giving it some chews, it crumbled apart in my mouth. It didn't feel like "meat" to me; there's nothing chewy about it. Certainly it was beef, as the packaging said, but then again "beef" could be anything, like beef hearts, beef liver, beef tongue, etc. Giving it some more chews, it started tasting like liver.

The package says it was made in Brazil, and says that it contains "sliced beef". I dunno. It just tastes awful as beef jerky.

So, perhaps it's great as dog treats.

Pricewise, it's not that expensive. A 6oz bag of Beggin Strips from PetSmart costs $3.29 (roughly 55 cents per ounce), compared to about 62 cents per ounce for the World Kitchens beef jerky.

Your dog will probably prefer it over Beggin Strips, it won't cost you much more money, and you'll have the satisfaction of feeding it human grade food. Or at least, I think it's human grade.

$9.99 at Albertson's, and other grocery stores.

Surgery Usually Best for Dog's Ligament Tear

Sunday, May 28, 2006

Dr James Roush, a veterinarian at Kansas State University, issued a press release stating that special surgery is usually the best course of treatment for ligament tear in dogs.

The press release contains some pretty good reading for dog owners who've dealt with ligament tears in their dogs. It does, however, sound a bit promotional.

Nonetheless, I reprinted the entire press release here on DoggieNews. Visit "Special Surgery Usually Best for Dog's Ligament Tear".

City of Chicago Considers Draconian Laws on Dog Ownership

Sunday, May 28, 2006

The Chicago-Sun Times reports that the Chicago City Council is considering some tougher laws on dog ownership.

It's part of one person's quest to create a "safer and better environment" for dogs.

Here's what License Committee Chairman, Eugene Schulter, is proposing...

  • Mandatory microchipping

  • Stiff fines for letting dogs roam free

  • Higher licensing fees for non-fixed dogs

  • Increased regulation and licensing of pet service providers

  • Limit tethering to no more than 3 hours per day
Apparently in Schulter's ward, a dozen dogs and four cats were found living in filth and without food and water, at a boarding facility. The article in the Sun-Times suggests that was the impetus for these new laws.

So instead of going after the problem people, he's going after everyone, even the people who treat their dogs well. His proposals don't discriminate, everyone's a criminal in Schulter's eyes.

The reason why I feel these laws are unnecessary, is because there already are laws on the books, at the State level, to prevent against these problems.

The State of Illinois has a Veterinary Professions act, licensing and regulating veterinarians, and it has an Animal Welfare act regulating and licensing kennels, catteries, pet shops, and shelters. Moreover, the State already has an Animal Control act, which includes dangerous dogs, controlling your dogs, roaming dogs, etc.

So why does the City of Chicago still have a problem? It's because they don't have the money for code enforcement.

In other words, they have bigger problems with human health, violent crime, infrastructure, and schools, that they don't have enough man hours to spend on animal suffering.

That's why Schulter is proposing laws that will burden everyone. Rather than enforcing the laws they already have, he figures that at least 50% of the city's residents will follow like sheep and comply with the new laws. And if he can get that, then he'll see some positive results.

Keep in mind that the City still has no money to enforce the new laws. The other 50% that refuses to comply will go scott free.

Question for everyone:

What do you think is the answer?

Is it better to create more layers of strict and redundant laws hoping that at least half the population will automatically comply?

Or is it better to put more tax dollars into enforcing the laws we already have? Where do we get the money for this, raise taxes higher, or cut out wasteful spending?

Woman Fined For Drunk Chihuahua

Monday, May 22, 2006

A woman in McHenry County, Illinois was fined $100.00 for having a drunk chihuahua.

Diane Marcotte claims she had left a glass of wine in the car, and that Chico must have gotten into it. The dog started having seizures, so she took it to the vet.

Interestingly, local police testified in court that they smelled alcohol on Chico's breath. Can you visualize cops holding a chihuahua's mouth up to their nose? "Yup, this dog's been hitting the bottle!".

The judge ordered placed the dog with new owners. He also fined her with child endangerment, and fined her for driving under the influence of alcohol. All because her dog got into some wine, and tried to take it to a vet.

Perhaps she would have walked to the vet, and let the dog die on the way over. At least, she wouldn't have gotten busted on the latter two charges.

Everyone makes mistakes. It doesn't solve anything to crucify people for them.

$1.6 Million Dog

Monday, May 22, 2006

An Oregon man claims his dog was worth $1.6 million, in a lawsuit.

Mark Greenup's dog Grizz was ran over by car driven by his neighbor. The dog was severely injured. Instead of providing veterinary care, Greenup had it euthanized. He claims the dog provided love, friendship, and protection to all of his family members.

The neighbor, Raymond Weaver, claims the dog's injuries were not that serious enough to require euthanasia.

Doesn't anyone see the conflict here?

If this dog was so important to his family, as determined by his $1.6 million figure, shouldn't he have spared no expense to save its life?

Cities Need More Dog Parks

Saturday, May 20, 2006

Walking dogsThe BBC reported today that a south London borough adopted a new law that limits the number of dogs people can walk simultaneously through city parks.
From July, anyone exercising four to eight animals will need to apply for a special licence.

There will also be rules about walkers congregating together and creating a "super pack" of dogs.
The town council said it's not the professional dog walkers they're concerned about. It's the dog owners and the unlicensed professionals they're targeting. They let the dogs off their leads, congregate with other dog walkers, and take their eyes off the dogs.

Perhaps it's a good thing that there are more dogs getting their exercise these days; we don't want to discourage people from doing so. If you take away "congregation", that gives people less of an incentive to walk their dogs.

Instead of enacting dog walking laws, cities need to create more dog parks.

Instead of cities trying to micromanage their citizens, create solutions that still encourage them to take their dogs out, allow them to socialize with other dog walkers, yet keep the dogs confined.

Dog parks, that's the answer.

Police Dog Dies After Being Left In Car

Friday, May 19, 2006

Stories of dogs dying after being left inside a hot car are everywhere. But it's not often you hear about a police dog dying in the same manner.

Officer John Baker (where have we heard that name before?) left his canine partner Atilla in the car, which is actually a normal procedure.

Cars used by K-9 officers have a temperature monitor that activates the siren and rolls down windows if the car's temperature gets above 85 degrees. But the device wasn't activated in Baker's car.

The officer was suspended, and The Humane Society has begun a criminal investigation.

Ugly Dog Contest Gets Hacked

Friday, May 19, 2006

The San Jose Mercury reports that Hackers broke their way into the computer server that was storing the vote count for the Sonoma-Marin World's Ugliest Dog Contest, and deleted some votes.

The leading contestant, Pee Wee, who we featured here on DoggieNews, had 40,000 votes erased, while another dog, Victoria, had 30,000 votes erased.
That put Lucille Bald -- a purebred Chinese Crested from Florida -- in the lead until fair officials noticed the vote theft. Contest officials said they do not believe there is any link between Lucille Bald and the presidential-votes controversy in the dog's home state several years ago.
Contest officials said they installed a firewall, and will restart the voting May 22.

Brake-Fast Doggie Bowl

Friday, May 19, 2006

Brake-Fast Doggie BowlThe Brake-Fast Dog Food Bowl is a new invention designed to slow down a dog from eating too fast.

The three prongs sticking up from the bowl act as barriers to keep a dog from snatching up mouthfuls of dry or wet dog food.

It's marketed as a way to help prevent Gastric Dilatation/Volvulus (GDV), when a dog's stomach distends with air to the point that it goes into shock and possibly dies.

Interestingly, the bowl doesn't have a rubber base, and will slide across the floor. The manufacturer says this actually helps slow down the eating process.

It has a no-tip shape, is dishwasher safe, and comes in a 5-cup medium size.

$14.99

City Hires Dog Translator to Address Barking

Friday, May 19, 2006

Howling DogAn article in the Telegraph said that a city in England hired an animal behaviorist to interpret various dog barks to figure out why dogs were barking.

The town of Peterborough launched "Noise Action Week" in an attempt address the town's problem of excessive dog barking. They hired an animal behaviorist to help teach the public on why dogs are barking, what they are saying, and how to stop it.

Shockingly, the animal behaviorist discovered the dogs were complaining about high taxes, big government, and wasteful spending.

So instead, the city relied heavily on a leaflet published by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, explaning that a bark is pretty all-embracing, covering everything from greeting and playing to threatening and being defensive; and from "contact seeking when alone" to a group activity.

In the end, the city advised dog owners to close their curtains, and turn on their radios.

Dog Bite Prevention Week

Wednesday, May 17, 2006

dog bite preventionThe week of May 21 to 27 has been designated as "Dog Bite Prevention Week", through a collaborative effort of several organizations, including the U.S. Postal Service, the American Veterinary Medical Assoc. (AMVA), and Doggone Safe Inc.

Doggone Safe, a non-profit organization dedicated to dog bite prevention through education offers the following tips to prevent dog bites...

The 3 Most Important Things to Teach Your Kids

1. Dogs Don’t Like Hugs and Kisses – Teach your kids not to hug or kiss a dog on the face. Hugging the family dog or face-to-face contact are common causes of bites to the face. Instead, teach kids to scratch the dog on the chest or the side of the neck.

2. Be a Tree if a Strange Dog Approaches – Teach kids to stand still, like a tree. Trees are boring and the dog will eventually go away. This works for strange dogs and any time the family dog gets too frisky or becomes aggressive.

3. Never Tease a Dog – and never disturb a dog that’s sleeping, eating or protecting something.

The 2 Most Important Things Parents Can Do

1. Supervise – Don’t assume your dog is good with kids. If a toddler must interact with your dog, you should have your hands on the dog too. Even if your dog is great with kids and has never bitten – why take a chance?

2. Train the dog – Take your dog to obedience classes where positive-reinforcement is used. Never pin, shake, choke, hold the dog down or roll the dog over to teach it a lesson. Dogs treated this way are likely to turn their aggression on weaker family members. Involve older children in training the family dog while supervising. Don’t allow children to punish the dog and don’t punish the dog yourself. Condition the dog to enjoy the presence and actions of children using positive experiences.

The 3 Most Important Things Dog Owners Can Do

1. Spay or Neuter Your Dog – Neutered pets are calmer, healthier and less likely to be aggressive. Neutering prevents unwanted dogs that may end up in shelters or in less than ideal conditions where they may grow up to be poorly socialized or aggressive.

2. Condition Your Dog for the World – Give your puppy lots of new positive experiences. Train using positive methods e.g. clicker training.

3. Supervise Your Dog – Supervise your dog at all times around children. Do not allow children to hug and kiss the dog. If visiting children are bothering your dog, put the dog away or send the children home.

Visit Doggone Safe for access to more complete information on dog bite prevention.

Summer Is Most Dangerous Time for Dogs

Friday, May 12, 2006

Wet Dog Shaking Off WaterSome interesting claims statistics released by Veterinary Pet Insurance revealed the summer months are the most hazardous for dogs.

The fact that people and their pets are spending more time outdoors during these months, high temperatures, insect infestations, abundance of plant growth, all add to increased ailments suffered by dogs.

According to 2005 claims data...

 FebJunJulAug
Foreign Body - Any20258583
Foreign Body - Eye7353021
Foreign Body - Nasal10814325
Foreign Body - Oral13272219
Foreign Body - Foot12768762
Burn6161111
Insect Bites/Sting68207256311
Near Drowning1314
Heat Stroke4365031
Ear Infections3,6294,2854,5784,756

Dr. Carol McConnell, manager of veterinary education and services for VPI, provides some explanation of the injuries...

  • Foreign Bodies: Foxtails, a type of grass with sharp points throughout the grass awn, are common in dry summer months. The sharp points force the grass awn to move forward (not backward), allowing the foxtail to imbed in the pet's paw, ears, eyes, or nose. As a penetrating foreign body, the foxtail inevitably causes an infection. See our article, "Protect Your Dog From Cheatgrass and Foxtails".

  • Stings/Bites: Insects and spiders of all shapes and sizes come out of their hiding places in the summer months. Mosquitoes congregate near pools of water. Rid your yard of even the shallowest pools of water (including the toddler's pool) so mosquitoes don't breed. Additionally, pet owners should keep their pets away from bees, wasps and woodpiles that may harbor spiders.

  • Hyperthermia: To prevent heat stroke during the summer, keep pets indoors as much as possible during the warmest hours of the day (usually 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) Never leave your pet in the car unattended.

  • Burns: Hot sidewalks can be painful for pets, and may account for the rise in claims for burns. In addition to burns on the pet's paws, sunburns are more common in the summer months, especially on body areas not protected by fur or dark skin. Pet owners should keep their pet indoors as much as possible during the times of day when the sun is at its peak.

  • Otitis Externa: Ear infections are frequently caused by water getting trapped in a dog's ear after swimming or bathing. If your pet is prone to water activities in the summer, speak to your veterinarian regarding specific ear cleaning products that will help dry the ear canal after water exposure to prevent recurring ear infections.

  • Near Drownings: Although relatively rare, cases of near drownings do increase in summer months. If this happens, be sure to keep the pet warm, and dry thoroughly with towels. Then, take the pet to the veterinarian immediately. Consider installing a Skamper Ramp in your swimming pool to help dogs that accidentally fall in.

ThermalWear Canine Cooling System

Friday, May 12, 2006

ThermalWear Canine Cooling SystemWhat makes this doggie cooling-vest different from the others is that it doesn't use ice packs or gel packs, but something the manufacturer refers to as a "phase changing substance".

Instead of freezing at 32°F, it freezes at 50°F, meaning you can "recharge" it much more quickly than with ice packs or gel packs.

The company's freezing substance doesn't freeze into a solid, but into something like snow, making it flexible for comfortable wear. It maintains a constant 50°F for two hours or longer, instead of the freezing temperatures that ice-packs and gel packs produce.

The manufacturer, Thermo-Tec, Inc. claims their dog vests have been used professionally by police K9 units and search and rescue dogs.

Available only in large size, you can buy it online for $75.00.

Pug Could Become Official State Dog

Thursday, May 11, 2006

PugLawmakers in the State of Delaware are considering a bill that would make the Pug the official state dog.

Apparently, the pug's intelligence and small stature best reflect's the nation's second smallest state. I wonder if snorting had anything to do with it?

Rep. Robert Valihura, who sponsored the bill, said he did so upon the request of a pug-owning constituent.

If only getting a Congressman to respond to all demands could be as simple.

Taking Little Dogs Away From Old Ladies

Wednesday, May 10, 2006

Old Lady with DogNBC6 of South Florida reports of a condominium association in West Palm Beach threatening to take a 79 year old lady's dog away from her.

The lady is suffering from bone cancer and breast cancer, and her little chihuahua named "Baby" is her only companion. The condo association has a rule against pet ownership, and it doesn't want to make an exception.

Americans can't even have a dog in their own home!

In a way, this dog is kinda like medical marijuana; it doesn't have any medical benefit, but it makes you forget about your problems.

So, do we make exceptions for certain people, and bend the rules?

My answer is that this is an excessive rule. The rule, rather, should be that each owner must control their pets so as not to bother other residents. If your dog barks too much, you have to put a stop to it, or else face fines.

It appears this condo association went about it backasswards.

I hope the residents of the association changes the rules, and kicks out the board members. Let the lady keep her dog.

Tuesday, May 02, 2006

Pee WeeI received an e-mail asking me to visit a blog containing photos and news about Pee Wee, also known as, "Son of Sam", the offspring of two ugly dogs, Zippy and Sam. Sam is the famous "world's ugliest dog".

The photo on the right is little Pee Wee. I suppose he is ugly, though I have to say he's more cute than ugly.

Pee Wee is trying to win the World's Ugliest Dog contest this coming June at the Sonoma-Marin Fair.

Sold under the Lick Your Chops brand, they're natural doggie treats made with real meat, cheese, and other stuff like rice, sweet potato, et al.

The Chicken Dumbells with Rice (pictured here) are kinda cool. They look like little buffalo wings. The meat part is made of chicken breast and rice, while the bone part is rawhide.

So now you and Max can munch down on buffalo wings while watching the NBA playoffs!
