African Puppy Scams

Thursday, November 08, 2007

A couple months ago, I posted an article here about Online Puppy Scams.

I wanted to bring this issue back to the top, after someone posted the following comment to the above article...
I never knew about puppy scams until this week because it happen to me and know I'm tryin to make sure that everyone know about this woman that tried it on me! Her name(or so called)is Rev. Sister Melanie Green. She is claiming that she will send you a FREE puppy as long as you pay shipping and give a donation to AWWAH MOTHERLESS BABIES FOUNDATION in Cameroun. She told me that she had already paid for the puppies flight but when I called there was no such reservation. When I emailed her and told her that I checked she said that she needed a Western Union code before she would put the puppy on the flight. I put a hold on the western union money...THANK GOD!!! I called one more time to the airlines and they had no reservation but found out that there was a puppy put on board...so I went to dallas and to my suprise NO PUPPY!!! SO BEWARE!!!!
The so-called African Puppy Scam is real, as evidenced by this person.

In the navigation bar at the top of this website, I put a link for "Adopt a Dog". This link takes you to PetFinder.com. PetFinder is a place you can go to adopt a puppy, without being scammed. The puppies there are from shelters and rescues in your local area.

If you're going to adopt a dog, adopt one from your local area so that you can see it in person, touch it, play with it, and know that you're not going to get scammed.

  • My comment is just this, I found one of these ads also. However after they emailed me and most of the spelling of words were so awfull. I just knew something wasn't on the up & up. This was for a Malteese puppy. Thank God nothing happened. I emailed them and told them that as a "vet assistant" that the shipping of a young puppy was dangerous(health wise). That I didn't want anything to do with this and for them to rethink this. Immorral.

  • First off - no airline would allow any pet on board a flight of more than 10 hours. Any pet coming from a foreign country would need to be quarantined for up to 2 weeks before allowed to enter a home. You can find all this info out on any airline website. So be informed first.

  • I can't believe anyone would fall for this scam. Red flags should have gone up immediately...

  • yes i want to testify to that there are so many puppy scams out there and my friend was a victim once as she lost 500 dollars.but i want to make sure that we are not talking about thesame Melanie Green here because i just got a puppy that came in today and it was from Rev.Melanie Green from a Mission home in Washington.I actually paid the flight just to try and see but to my greatest surprise,my puppy came and i have her with me now even as i write.

  • Yes it happened to my family too! I contacted a breeder from puppyfinder.com she refered me a revrend she sold two English Bulldogs to but he went to africa on a christian mission and cant keep the dogs to xtreme heat. we spoke to him via email and phone and numerous times he has come up with xcuses of y he needs more money to ship the pup. The breeder that referred me was caroleoshaughnessy@yahoo.com the guys is rev.peter202@fastermail.com
My lesson was learned too bad it was too late.

  • FYI
There were 3 ads in newspapers in Florida. One was from Pastor Eric Castell on a Christian Mission in Africa the email that I got a response from: ericcastell@yahoo.com
He states in the email he will ship via Delta Pet Airlines.
The other was for an English Bulldog named Delly. Same type of thing. The "owner" is located in Cameroon and the 3rd response did not say they were in Africa, but charges only for shipping. The email is fedtorres@yahoo.com Just wanted to pass it along.

  • Here is my story. The original email came from candy meacham stating that she had a friend in the House of Representatives that was sent to work in Nigeria. She was asked to put the puppies up for adoption. She put me in touch with Miguel Thrasher. He has hounded for money to be sent through Western Union. Once he received the initial payment, he needed more to get the puppy through customs. Thank God we found out it was a scam before my daughter was out anymore money. I don't understand why someone can't catch these people and prosecute them. They are going to Western Union and retreiving the money, so they do exists.

  • This same thing happen to me i looked on petfinder.com and was refferd to a women who was a doctor in africa and needed someone to adopt her maltese puppys and i feel for it I sent the women $250 and she emailed me the next day saying the puppy was stuck in customs i needed to send more money. I new it was a scam then i wish i would have done more research and protected myself. western union needs to be more strict on who they let pick up money because they said they can't track it or do anything about it. The ladys name was shelly hatmen but im sure they change there name each scam

  • Wow. I had no idea. i've never bought any pets online but it's so hard to find a english bulldog breeder with a reasonable price. so when I started to look on puppyfind, live deal and kijiji there was this same breeder on here. email address: Jennifer rev.smithpups@yahoo.com who said I was in luck that I contacted her in time because one of the people that adopted 2 of her bulldog pups had to go on a missionary in Africa and could not keep them due to the conditions and the heat.
well enstead of asking her for my own pups I thought I would help the missionary pups and give them a good home. what kind of people pretend to be missionaries and reverands and could do this sort of thing. anyway so rev. jennifer smith gave me the email of the guy with the pups these are the email addresses he used:
    Chris Kelly revchris02@yahoo.com
    and...REVANDERSONPETER101@YAHOO.COM
and he asked for my name address nearest airport and phone numbers, which I stupidly gave him..thinking a reverand would never do anything like that.. well he told me it would be 500 for shipping that he didnt want to make profit on them he just wanted them to go to a good christian home and that it was very important to him that someone take care of his "babies"..well after I sent him my info i got this really weird feeling..so i started to look up the reverands names, nothing, so then I looked up african missionary bulldog puppies and I couldnt believe the amount of sites and different things on scams that came up and when I saw this one the stories were almost exactly alike. thank god i havent sent him any money. someone definately needs to prosecuits these people. or get this on the news or something! also I looked up the website the pictures had on them and look at what their front page story is:
    http://www.champbulldogs.com/scam.htm
I am so sorry for everyone that found out too late. something must be done!! I think ill call our local news station!

  • My mother also wanted two puppies from this man. Some things didn't click right with me, but I asked him further questions, regarding fees. Like Tracy, his poor spelling and grammar made me think. I am also aware of animals having to be quarantined, and he failed to mention that as well. Finally, I wondered why he wouldn't have put the puppies up for adoption before leaving the US. The man is now pretending to me doing missionary work in Africa with his wife and three children.

    By Blogger D, at 1:12 PM, May 22, 2008

  • I answered an ad in the paper about adopting two yorkie puppies (teacups) ..and asked questions. I wanted to know what gender they were and anything about them. The man is now pretending to me doing missionary work in Africa with his wife and three children. And needed to get a good home for his "babies" he called it. Red Flags went up all over this email for me. Then I asked him more questions...about fees, etc. He emailed me back and wanted a lot of personal information. He even offered to split the shipping costs to have the puppies shipped. (Still sounded way to fishy for me!) So I started doing some searching on adoption of puppies from Africa. And sure enough...RED FLAGS jumped out at me! SCAMS SCAMS SCAMS! I'm sure glad I didn't give him any personal information. And its ashame that law enforcement authorities cannot do something about it. There are way too many scams out there...something should be done to put a stop to them! I mean...come on....why take a puppy to africa in the first place? And to top it all off...the man even sent adorable pictures of the "fake" puppies!
Funny....the man is probably here in the USA.
Another red flag that went up for me...he is suppose to be in africa...and he is answering my emails right away. Time difference in africa ...he should have been sleeping! LOL

  • Hi everyone I found a English bulldog scam today and a grate dane one a while ago. They both had the same story. "Im holding the dog for a friend that is a good Christian that is in Africa..yadyadayada...he wants it to go to a Christian home"-BULL SH!T. So when I find these guys I write back to them that i worship the devil and would have loved to buy their dog for a sacrifice. (OF coarse this is me lying but I think it's a good way to say F-OFF. :) I was scammed on craigslist for a car. And it was horrible! It was a uncommon scam type and it looked perfectly official. I hate cons!

  • i all most fell for it until i looked up the email on google becuse i did not some of the info she gave and i got about 1000 pages saying scame and i was getting ready to leave to send her the money.

  • This happened to me!!! I lost 100 dollars and he wanted more! He said he was a missionary working in Cameroon serving God, and that hsi puppies couldnt stand the heat. I payed him the "shipping" fee, and told him when I got my puppies he would recieve my donation to his cause. Well he said he took them to the airport, but two hours after the supposed flight was supposed to take off i get an email from a make believe manager of the airline saying that I had to pay 700 for insurance on the puppies before they could board. The words were all spelled wrong..just like the emails from the dude. Thank goodness I smartened up and when I refused to pay, and email from the guys "wife" came saying she would pay 500 of it if i would just send 200. It just kept getting weirder and weirder, so finally I told him I wasnt sending another dime until i got my dogs, he said he was goign to the airport to get them. he even made a fake plane ticket and sent it to me!!! He had copied and pasted the flight information

  • i was almost the victim of the same scam involving a "missionary" living in victoria island, cameroon. I found an add for a english bulldog puppy for sale for $250 and the lady told me that all i had to pay for is to have the puppy deliverd via airplane ride which was $130. Well i read some stories on this web site and they matched perfectly with my stories. Its a shame that people are using God in their scams and the poor puppies. By the way you can look up pet delivery agencies at IATA.com they have a directory of agencies that deals with pet transportation. Fast Pet Delivary International Services (something like that) doesnt exist!!!

  • I too am one of the latest scam victims. A woman I contacted on petfinder.com about English Bulldogs redirected me to a Dr. Peter Gordon that got a call from God to go to Nigera and can't keep the bulldogs he adopted from Lisa Scullion {scullionlisa@hotmail.com} due to the extreme heat. All he wanted was for his babies to go to a good home and to send pictures every 2 months. I even was emailed pictures of 2 dogs get this, named Adam and Eve. Well long story short he wants me to send money Western Union so now I am just messing with him and told him my husband would be in his area in the next 2 days and that he would love to meet him and he would still pay him there when he picked up the dogs. I don't think we can do anything about these scammers but post these alerts on as many sights as you can.

  • Hello! So finding a maltese for free only having to pay the flight ticket of $135 sounded AWESOME, right? Well I fell into the same boat as most of us did and contacted him and checked my email more then I have ever checked my email getting all excited about this puppy from a very "christian" home. They wanted pictures to be sent, sounded fine to me! Asked personal information and i gave it to WHOEVER unfortunately and tomorrow I was planning on going to western union and doing the whole "transfer money". Tonight I figured something wasn't right. I mean come on.. a maltese 12 week old cute as can be puppy for only the flight ticket? My other maltese ran 700 dollars. The dude called me today acting very "sketchy" telling me about how he made the flight arrangements and I have to transfer the money. After reading all of these comments about almost exactly what happened to me if not a little bit different i can not give someone i don't even know money whether it be a dollar or whatever. BE CAREFUL!

  • I had been looking for a shorkie all over the web. So today I received in my email from a Flower Williams stating
"The puppy advertised has been bought by one Mrs Carolina and the pup is doing quite well with her and her family according to her recent update me about the pup welfare at her home. I want to refer you to one Dr. Ray Smith He bought two puppies from me as well. He has been transfered to West Africa in continuations to his work as a Doctor. He went there with the two puppies he bought from me. Unfortunately, Africa is not the place for these type of dogs.He contacted me to find a caring parent that will adopt the dogs back to the USA.He had no time for them, also the african weather is so harsh for them according to him and this is really troubling him and his mission in West Africa. Contact Dr. Ray Smith and tell him I refered you to him. He will be excited if he knows you are from me. Write Dr. Ray Smith on his email address Below
    mailto:dr.raysmith202@yahoo.com"
I then receive an email immediately from Dr. Smith with this response:
    Hello,

Thanks for the interest in my pups and i'm happy to hear that Flower directed you to me. I need an urgent home for the pups because i can't take good care of them do to nature of my work. I am a Doctor and can't risk my job for the pups, my wife could have been the one taking care of them but Unfortunately she is dead, but she is late now and i have to send the pups to another home to care for them.I am looking for that good and comfortbale home where they will be furnished with lots of love. The pups are ready for any good home and i have already packaged their kits. i have the two Yorkshire Terrier Puppies with me here , they are 10 weeks old Black & Brown . Weight: 2lbs Adult Weight is: 4-5lbs grown. Sex: Male and Female Up to date on shots and vaccination. the asking price for one pups is $200 shipping included both pups is $400 shipping included.

I must tell you, the money is not the issue for me, i'm concern on the pups health, i want to make sure that i ship them to a good and comfortable home where they will be happy all the days of their life and i hope you are going to promise me that home. Pls, get back to me with your address phone number and nearest airport so i can conclude arrangement on the shipment. let me know when you want them shipped. I will be waiting to read from you asap.

    God bless you

    Dr. Ray Smith

Please beware. I had no idea and in fact I thought it was this one puppy that I have my heart set on that was gone. But after I read the Doc's email I knew it was a scam. So I emailed him back and asked him to write my name on a piece of paper and take a picture of the pup for me. Of course no response. And I wasn't even looking for a Yorkie so that is what got me at first. Don't send any money - you would be better off to fly to the state or just look in your own state and drive there. That is what I am going to do now. Unfortunately, now I am very sceptical of everyone.

  • Yes the last one was a SCAM: I received a similar email in response to classified ad #240375 listed on DomesticSale.com:

    Hello,
The AKK puppies that I advertised have been adopted by one Mrs. Bessie Dredge and the pups are doing quite well with her and her family according to her recent update about the pups welfare at her home. I want to refer you to one Rev. Leo Booth who bought two puppies from me as well. He has been transferred to West Africa in continuations to his missionary work. He went there with the two puppies he bought from me. Unfortunately, Africa is not the place for these type of dogs. He contacted me to find a caring parent that will adopt the dogs back to the USA. He had no time for them, also the africa weather is so harsh for them according to him and this is really troubling him and his mission in West Africa. Contact Rev. Leo Booth and tell him I referred you to him. He will be excited if he knows you are from me. Write Rev. father Leo Booth on his email address Below:
    fatherleobooth@live.com
Get me informed as soon as you adopt the pups from him.
    Best Regards

  • Saw an add on my local papers classified website. Started emailing and it seemed to good to be true and it was. I pressed the person on the other end for information. They must have been desperate for money as they gave me an address and phone number. I called the phone and someone actually answered, and verified all the false date I had been giving them.

Reported all the information I had on this guy to Nigerian authorities. I'm sure nothing will come of it, just wanted to get it on their radar.

BE AWARE. They claim the puppies are AKC register. If any seller can not provide #'s when they claim the puppy is registered, that should always be a red flag.

Also, I am a Network Engineer that specializes in security. These scammers tend to use email adresses from servers that are very old and typically have changed hands ie....rocketmail is now controlled by Yahoo. If you suspect something is up do a little research into their email adress, and I bet you find something funny. Rocketmail transfer happened years ago and the only reason not to upgrade would be if you were looking to hide something. These people do not take many steps to try and hide that this is a scam, so if it looks to good to be true IT IS!!!!!!!

  • I've read everyone's post, and have to add, the moment I started asking about how does quarantine work, and I've had a dog airshipped and it wasn't that much, and how long is the flight, the African person who was helping "Kim Sanchez" place these two yorkie dogs stopped calling me. He had been calling my cell number all hours of the day, the middle of the night, etc. This threw up major red flags - he was desperate for the money. His price went from over $1,000 to airship this "yorkie" to me, to $400. It's been almost a year, and guess what? Today this person IM'd me, and when I asked if this was the person I met on a vacation, he went right along with it and then went on to ask if I still wanted a dog!!! Can you believe it? So, buyer be aware! I ended up buying a yorkie from a local breeder, and haven't had to deal with getting scammed.

  • We went online looking for a bulldog in the EastBay. Today was the first time I heard about the puppy scam. A "nun" from Cameroon was selling an English bulldog puppy(yes, on a east bay website). First she asked that we pay her $480, when we said no she said to pay $250 so that she can send "Kelsie" and the other $230 when we received her. Supposedly she didn't have money to pay for the shipping (which is cruel to the puppy), but she was pretending to be a nun , being in the computer the whole day sending(personal) emails, she had a personal phone, the puppy had "1 year health insurance, shots, toys, etc." She said she couldn't keep the dog because of the weather conditions.....I know, it was extremely dumb to talk to her in the fist place.

  • I went to puppyfiders.com and found a puppy named Jane. I fell in love with her on sight. Contacted the seller and made arrangements to purchase the dog along with an additional fee of 80 dollars towards shipping. I have never done this before let alone purchase a purbred dog. this was done on the 25th of October and now is the 31st and I have no dog, no money and I am finding out that this woman has been trying to sell my dog(who prob. dont exist)Even to my daughter in NC. I contacted the police because we wanted to catch her so this wouldnt happen to another person. Concenquently the local police here in Willits, Ca. have told me that this is a civil case and refused to take a report. If we cant get help in situations like this how are we ever suppose to stop these people. If anyone would like any info that might be helpful to them please e-mail me at ralloctap@yahoo.com. and make a note letting me know it is in regards to puppy scams. I dotn open mail that I dont know. God Bless you all. Pat PS I have all the e-mails from this lady aprox 22. I would love to see her jailed but cant afford the attorney to do so. Pat

  • Yes, I am one of those sucked into the puppy scam. I'm out $650.00 for a Shiba Inu. I was on the site puppyfind.com. The name was Jennifer Mytre, then two days later Claire Hart with the same picture. The supposed Rev Dennis Loydd was the one who got my money. I talked to him quite a bit, first gave hime 350.00 the fee for "Jessy". Then later that day said he needed 400.00 more for the insurance. Then another email saying she couldn't be shipped because she was ill and needed 300 more for a treatment. I received another email this morning, saying that he would borrow the money from his parish members to pay for the treatment and then send her. On wednesday I am supposed to get back the 300 I forked out. Yah right, I don't see that happening. I feel so dirty and violated believing people like that.

  • I got suckered right in. The scammers kept saying god bless and praising the lord so of course i thought they would never scam like that. I got sent pictures of 2 bulldog AKC/CKC registered puppies, but in one picture there was a caucasean hand with a wedding band on it but what really made no sense was the day after we sent the puppies the man claiming to be name Niba Yannick called me and told me that my puppies were on the plane but i could hardly understand him because he had such a heavy african accent, yet a white hand in the picture it made no sense.

  • Well I am currently going through something simular. The man told me $150 for the maltipoo with a whole bunch od stuff. He told me to Western Union him as well but I got it mixed up and did a Money Gram. I ended up cancelling the money gram and as I satrted to western union on the side it had a number for fraud. I called to see what they had to say and they told me about the scams. I told the guy I didn't feel comfortable and I changed his mind. He claims he's not a scammer, so to prove it he's going to send me the puppy and once i receive it I'll pay him...We'll see how this ends up. My advice have them do the same as this guy is doing for me if not find a breeder near you so you can drive to pick up your puppy and save money for shipping.
