Chihuahua Attacked by Hawk

Thursday, December 20, 2007

The Downers Grove Reporter ran a story about a chihuahua that was attacked by a hawk in an Illinois suburb...
When she went out to check on the noise, she found her 2 pound, 5 ounce Chihuahua, Tico, in the talons of a large hawk. She began throwing things at the bird, starting with a bottle of oil, snow and a piece of wood. The bird would not let go of her pet.

Eventually she grabbed a snow shovel and threw it, finally scaring the bird off her pet, though it continued to perch on a fence.
Tico now suffers from a head puncture, swollen face, and lost the use of its hind legs.

You never think of hawks attacking small pets, but it's something I see down here in Southern California. I live in the inland area, where hawks are everywhere. I've seen hawks fly into my backyard to go after vermin and small birds, the birds are not all shy about it. One neighbor had a dog attacks by a hawk, but was able to get away.

The article went on to say that the owner has a Yorkshire Terrier, and that it's too big for hawks. But I mentioned another hawk-attack story a few years ago, where a Yorkshire Terrier was attacked...

I suppose this kind of thing is unheard of in Illinois, but you just can't let your guard down. I hope little Tico will recover.

  • I have hawks in my area. The Red Tailed Hawk. I live in a wooded area where they are flying around looking to hunt down my Squirrels.I love Squirrels. Hate Hawks. They are protected here so we can't shoot them. My Sheltie hates hawks too. He watches over my Chihuahua and my Yorkie when they are all in their exercise pen area. I have seen him lunge after a hawk when one came in a little close to his flock (dogs). It was like watching a "Lassie Movie". (O:

  • My Sheltie (Dasher) protects my Yorkie and my Chihuahua from the pesky Red Tailed Hawks that fly around my home. They are after the wild Squirrels that live in our woods. Which we live in the middle of. One day I saw Dasher lunge after a hawk protecting his flock (the other dogs). It was like watching a "Lassie Movie".

  • I see hawks almost daily on the Southwest side of Chicago. I am in a well-populated area, not near a wooded area, nor near railroad tracks. I feed the birds and squirrels and the hawks come by to prey on them. A squirrel was running on the telephone line with a hawk on its back trying to grab him. I have 4 large dogs, shepherd-rottweiler-labrador mixed. They have not been out when the hawk attacks. I put the dogs inside so they will not chase away the feeding birds and squirrels. Last week a hawk left a dead pigeon hanging in my tree. When it fell to the ground, its head was missing. Another time as I was putting food in the bird feeders, a bird flew into a fence as they all scattered. It was only then that I saw a hawk landing in a nearby tree. The hawks like to prey on the beautiful light green colored Monk Parakeet birds that have rapidly reproduced in my area. It is great to see such a tropical-looking bird living in cold Chicago temperatures. The Monk Parakeets are very noisy and they fly in groups, which probably makes them easy targets for the hawks.

I heard that hawks were brought in to reduce the pigeon population in downtown Chicago. Looking out of the 22nd floor window at my job, I can see 3 or 4 hawks circling and then diving down. Once on the ground, I can see the pigeon parts.

If it is true about the hawks being brought in to reduce the pigeon population, the hawks have multiplied and may be getting out of control.
