I don't see the Bichon on this list. It is by far one of the best small breeds to own, in my opinion.
Of course I own one, he is named Nygel.

I know a dane is a big dog, which limits many people from owning one, however, they are such great family dogs!!!! They are great with children, and great protectors. They have been competing in obedience, agility, flyball, tracking, and even outdoor sports and doing exceptionally well. Most people don't realize that danes can be very very quick in sports, and quite coordinated. They also are very funny.
In spite of their size, they are couch potatoes when indoors. Obviously, they need plenty of exercise outdoors as well, but you can have one in a small house because of this. Good inspiration for their owners to get exercise too!! (hey, that's a good thing!)
I realize lots of other dogs are great as well, but hate to see the dane ruled out. Oh well.

I have two furkids! Handfuls, yes; but nor would I trade either of them for the world.
1. "Mama Milly, my Yellow Lab
2. "Punk" my Yellow (from Mama), and Golden Retriever (from Papa).
The Punkster will be 2 years old on March 27th...
She suffered a terrible accident when she was about 3 weeks old; out of a litter of ten I ended up keeping her. I did not trust that anyone else would have properly cared for her, even knowing about her history.
Growing up on a farm, I have had many dogs over the years, but the special relationship between these two is something so special to be a part of.
I don't know what I would do without either of these animals/kids.
Having been adopted myself, having raised 4 children, and now having 4+ grandchildren, I believe I know the absolute definition of "family" too...
These (any) dogs ARE "family", in the greatest sense of the word.
They are funny.
They are genuine.
And when the situation allows, they are "fierce" too.
(Just three days ago, Punk risked life and limb to save me from a mouse)! I don't think I have ever laughed so hard in my life...
I don't believe it matters what "breed" of dog(s) you own. As long as they have been raised with love and kindness.
Any dog that has been given those things will give 1000% back to you and your family.
Just love them, care for them always, (even when the weather doesn't suit YOU), and you will have loyal and loving friends for life!
XOXO
Anne

Do you all not realize this is a list of the top breeds owned by people statistically, i.e., not a list of which dog breeds are best. The list does not express that the labrador is the top dog breed to have, but is the top dog breed that the most people own.

German Shepards should not even BE on that list. They claim they are family dogs, but half the time they are EVIL ATTACK DOGS!! WHY DO YOU THINK THEY ARE USED BY POLICE!!

I'm pretty bummed too, to see that there are so few Bullmastiff owners. I Heart Bullmastiff.

Well i have a female 2yr old Miniature pinscher & she's smart as a whip, has a bubbly personality, & is great with my 2 boys, not an agressive bone in her body! She's not big enough to be a watch dog, but she's exactly what we wanted in a housedog. We love her & consider her one of our kids. Min-pins aren't a popular breed, but to me they should be at least be in the top 20. (my opinion of course)

I am very disappointed that the Australian Shephard is not on the list. Not only are they very cute, they are exceptionally smart, loyal, and easy to train. Mine is adorable and loving.

I think it is wrong to pick one bread and signal them out as a BAD dog. Any Dog can be GOOD or BAD depending on how the HUMAN trainer trains him to be. It has nothing to do with the DOG... I know that I have seen many Dogs that are so sweet and people say its not normal for the BREAD of dog to be that sweet!!! I say to heck with that!!! Its the OWNER/TRAINER not the DOG who should be blamed for a dog being mean or nice!!! I wish people could see that any dog can be a good pet if you get it as a puppy and TRAIN it right. Don't let your kids kick, hit, punch, pull, or do anything mean to it. A lot of times the meanness in an animal has a reason behind it. It has been abused by someone in the family that could be a child just as easily as it could be an adult. So watch your kids people! And if you don't know how to train your pets then see a professional they are out there and its best for you to train them right. There is NEVER any reason to hit an animal! Training is just taking time and effort on your behalf to make sure he or she knows what is right and wrong just as you would with a child!

i dont know how you could think that german shepards are evil attack dogs, the police don't use that one particular breed, they use many breeds, the breeds that they use are used because those particular breeds are intelligent and easily trained, so if they are smart and easy to train it would make a great deal of sense that those breeds of dogs would make excellent pets and family members, i know because i have a german shepard and she is very smart and easy to train, yes she is protecive of our family as all dogs are, don't all dogs bark when somebody is at the door or when they hear something in the night that is out of place? that is, after all, what all dogs do, regardless of breed or size, jrose is right when the owner acts like a dog owner should then the dog acts like it should, kind and loving with it's family and cautious of strangers just like we humans do.
p.s. i've also known quite a few pit bulls that are sweethearts

As I was reading the comments. One hit the spot. These breeds mentioned on the "top ten list" are the ones commenly owned. Not necessarily the one right for you!!! The commen "mutt" can be very good also.! The list is only one of a.k.c rigistered breeds. Keep in mind that you should compare the charecter of the dog with your needs, and abilty to care for the said dog. And individule dogs very in temperment and other qualities within the breed. They are not clones! My Doberman is unique and different from other dobermans. And the right one for me. Let us not be sheep and run out and get a dog only cause the breed made a "top ten" list.

I remember when the rottweiler was on the top 10 list. It was a disaster for the breed. Every Tom, Dick and Harry bred them for profit, not careing about genetics or health issues.

I am glad to see the dashund made it. They are wonderful and very smart dogs.

I haven't seen anything about the Boston Terrier. I love this breed because they are short-haired so easy to maintain, few major health problems and very smart. I have four (mom, pop and 2 kids)and I wouldn't trade any of them. I've had cockers in the past and they are great as well, but the long hair and country life just don't mix as well. But then again, anything with four paws usually wins my heart before I know it!

In responce to the comment about German Shepards, they are not evil attack dogs. I owned one for 11 years and he was a sweetheart. No, he did not like strangers unless I said they was OK. But he did Die protecting me and my kids when my husband was in Iraq during the first conflict. Without him I dont know what we would have done. I do hope you choked on those words you used "evil" . In this house we use the words LOYAL,LOVING,KIND,AND PROTECTIVE.

As an owner of a Rottweiler, I am disappointed they are not in the top ten. But I agree that every person should not go out and but a dog because it is on the top ten. I have always loved rottweilers and I am fascinated with them. They are the best breed for my family and I know I have 3. They may look scary to people but everyone in my neighborhood knows they are the friendliest dogs in the neighborhood. They wouldn't hurt a fly unless that fly was trying to hurt a family member. I think in today's society it is important to have a dog that will have a watchful eye on your family and go above and beyond to protect it. Recently we found out that we had a man breaking into homes where he thought it was just women living in there and robbing and raping them. I never thought he'd try to break into my house, but boy was that a mistake. My rottweiler's attacked on command like they are supposed to and when I said stopped they stopped and that man laid there until the police arrived. I am thankful that my dogs possibly saved my life and the women in our neighborhood. Thanks to them the kids can play outside and the women can be a little more at peace. I'd give my life for my dog and its incredible to know they would do the same.

I love my Yorkie, Benjamin, not because of his breed, but because he is my best friend. He is truly family

It's easy to see why the Shih Tzu would be in the top ten....they are wonderful and smart animals with lovely personalities and just the greatest all-around demeanor!

My sister and brother-in-law own a Rottweiler and a PitBull, both gotten as puppies. You would think that no one would want to go to their house because of the breed of dogs they owned. Yes...they have a reputation and just looking at them can make you hesitate, but I want you to know that they are two of the most loving animals I have ever known. They greet you with kisses and roll over on their backs for a belly rub like any other friendly dog. They are cherished family members who give nothing but love to everyone. And the more wonderful thing is, the dogs adore each other. So much for assuming that Rottweilers and PitBulls are evil breeds.

My breed, the German Shepherd Dog, has been in the AKC's Top Ten list for several years and I don't actually see that as a good thing.
You see, when a breed is very popular, that means lots of people are buying them because they are popular. That, in turn, encourages irresponsible breeders to churn out puppies left and right without doing the things responsible breeders dog, such as health and temperament checks on their breeding stock, titling, and careful screening of their puppy buyers. Which hurts the breed as a whole.
I also want to say something to the Anonymous commenter who said that German Shepherds are "evil attack dogs" and that this is why they are used by the police.
Obviously, that person does not know the first thing about dogs in general and German Shepherds in particular.
Law enforcement and the military use a variety of breeds, although their main breeds are German Shepherds and Belgian Malinois. The reason they are mainly using those breeds is not because they are "evil" or "attack dogs", but because they are very agile, very adaptive, highly intelligent, and easy to train. That makes them ideal working dogs.
Incidentally, any type of "attack" work is a GAME for the dog, and the bite is the dog's reward. It has nothing to do with being "evil".

I am new to doggie news and enjoyed it for my first time. It's sad to see that the haters have to get on and ruin it for the rest of us animal lovers. If you hate any one breed than you cannot be a true animal lover. The nasty comment about the GSD just shows there are still alot of ignorant people in the world which is why I like dogs best!! The GSD is not my favorite breed but I agree with the other comments stating that no breed is a bad breed. I have been aquainted with many breeds for many years(with breeders, vets, boarding kennels, training schools, and daycares)I saw NO bad breeds just bad people! You may be indifferent to a breed or don't prefer it, but DON'T HATE! Does anyone have any good info. on killing clover without harming dogs with the chemicals?
