Barking Up the Right Tree - Tales Out of Dog School
Dog owners who have enjoyed the humorous and moving stories
in this new book will never look at their dogs in quite
the same way again!
September 9, 2004
Vera Reeves has authored a new book, "Barking Up the
Right Tree: Tales Out of Dog School", that offers several
stories about dogs, often humorous, touching, and inspiring,
from her own 35 years of experience working as a professional
dog trainer.
A
true original, Reeves’ irreverent wit and candor about human
behavior quirks (including her own) is as sharp as her eye
for finding the hidden talents in dogs, many of which had
been branded “incorrigible”. As a professional trainer and
vocal advocate for dogs’ rights for more than 35 years and
an expert witness on dog behavior in Federal Court, Reeves
knows exactly what is wrong with wayward and disagreeable
dogs: their humans, and the often ludicrous advice they are
given by self-styled experts.
Humorous and moving anecdotes about dogs are timeless and
have always been popular. This book goes much further. Each
story deepens the readers’ understanding of the true nature
of dogs and teaches a lesson about finding and guiding the
(often overlooked) talents in our canine companions.
From soothing the angst-ridden owner of Dixie, the young,
boisterous Doberman, bent on a perpetual search-and-destroy
mission to her portrayal of Maggie, the impish Kerry Blue
Terrier, whose hobby is chasing people in parks on top of
picnic benches, Reeves lightheartedly and sometimes poignantly
relates the trials and tribulations and ultimate triumphs
of owners who had all but given up on their actually superbly
gifted dogs.
“If these stories don’t touch your heart, you are not
human, or worse, you have never loved a dog!” (Judy
Kempler, President, North Bay Working Dog Association, Santa
Rosa, CA)
"What an entertaining and literate writer Reeves is!
I can sincerely recommend ‘Barking’ to my clients.”
(Dr. Kerrin Hoban, veterinarian and behavior consultant,
Santa Cruz, CA)
As a dog trainer for 35 years, Reeves has worked with close
to 4,000 dogs and their owners. She was a kennel manager for
25 years, the last 15 as co-owner of Atherton Acres in Marin
County, California, a well-known boarding and training facility.
She has 20 years experience as training director for working
dog clubs, taught college courses on dog behavior and classes
for aspiring dog trainers (State of California approved curriculum).
She is also a certified expert witness on dog behavior in Federal
Court.
