If
you like to climb the rocks and boulders dotting the Arizona
landscape, you might find a Pug climbing up with you. Vincent
Thomas Pug (aka, "Vinny the Pug") loves to climb
rocks and boulders, and is becoming a celebrity in the Scottsdale,
AZ area.
It all started in the Summer of 2001 when Vinny and his owner
Allen Kimble was taking a walk. Vinny encountered a boulder
and tried to climb it. He ended up failing, but he tried again
and again on later attempts, and finally succeeded. "When
he climbed the boulder he seemed quite satisfied" said
Allen. "I swear he had a smile on his face".
Since then Vinny and Allen has gone on to complete a challenge
they dub the "100-Day Challenge", climbing 1,000
boulders in 100 days. Allen documented the event by taking
over 1,300 photographs, and posted them on Vinny's Photo Weblog.
Photos of the challenge attracted attention, and soon Vinny
was featured in the April 2003 issue of Sweat Magazine, a
publication dedicated to Arizona Sports and Fitness. He has
also been featured in Climbing Magazine, Scottsdale Views
Magazine, and Loving Pets Magazine.
For those who might think that Vinny just climbs small boulders,
think again. He climbs up such Arizona landmarks as Camelback
Mountain and Pinnacle Peak. And yes, Vinny actually climbs
up these obstacles with his own paws.
Vinny and Allen are now channeling their energies into animal
rescue and adoptions. They have created "Vinny the Pug
Enterprises" for the purposes of helping rescue and adoption
groups raise needed money.
