“Whether you are bringing your dog to the office every day or just for one day a year, you and your canine need to be on your best behavior,” says Miss Fido Manners. “Take your dog to the office only if he is housebroken, friendly with strangers, and remains calm in a foreign environment. Your pooch should also be well-mannered, walking nicely on a leash and having a training repertoire of come, sit and stay.”

Miss Fido Manners offers seven strategies on how to make your canine a Sirius star at the work place:

  • Doggie Style - Make a favorable impression by arriving with a healthy, clean dog that is parasite-free. Your dog’s appearance is what makes the first real impression when he arrives at the office. If he is clean and pleasant smelling, it reflects that you are pet aware of those around you.

  • Working Dogs - Be prepared for a day of pet tails. Bring his bowls, toys, treats, bed, blanket or crate to the office. With his favorite things around, he will not be distracted by the corporate hubbub and will easily settle down with some of his own pet projects.

  • Take a Doggie Break - Give him the opportunity to eliminate and exercise at lunch time by taking him on a long walk. This will give him the opportunity to have a drink of water and eat one of his favorite snacks.

  • Paw-ing off Responsibility - Recognize that your dog is your responsibility. Don’t ask your assistant, a secretary or a junior associate to take care of your dog for the day.

  • Dog Tricks of The Trade - When riding elevators, meeting and greeting office personnel, place your dog in a sit/stay. By being obedient, he will demonstrate that he is a reliable and confident team player that can follow direction.

  • Ruff Attitude - Although it is hard to believe, not everyone loves dogs. Be considerate and respectful of those who are fearful and/or allergic. If necessary, keep your dog in your office.

  • Bark fest - If you dog become unruly, be prepared to immediately take him home.

Charlotte is a pet expert and columnist for several magazines including Fido Friendly Magazine where she pens the Dear Miss Fido Manners column. As Miss Fido Manners, she is a firm believer that “well-behaved pets are more pleasant to be around; are treated better by everyone” get invited to more places including restaurants, parties and the workplace.
