PETCO Offers Some Tips to Ensure Safe Summer Travel With
Pets
Consider these travel tips to keep your pooch safe and
happy.
SAN DIEGO, June 15, 2004 -- It's summertime. The weather's
heating up, the kids are out of school, and parents all over
the country are preparing themselves for some time away from
the rat race. As you sit down to plan the perfect family getaway,
ask yourself: will the fluffy members of your family be joining
you on your trip?
To ensure a healthy, happy, stress-free vacation for you
and your pet, PETCO Animal Supplies, Inc., offers these helpful
summer travel tips.
Check with your vet. Before you pack Fido's bags,
make sure you clear your vacation plans with your vet. You'll
want to obtain documentation to show that your pet is in good
health with up-to-date shots.
Destination. If you are traveling to a different country,
contact that nation's embassy to find out their restrictions
on animal travel. Some countries require long quarantine periods
before a pet can put their paws on foreign soil.
Mode of transportation. Though you have many options
when it comes to summer travel, you may find that some companies
won't allow Kitty on board. Before making any plans, PETCO
advises you to find out if your carrier allows pets, if they
require specific documentation, and if they charge additional
fees.
If you are traveling by automobile, remember that it is
dangerous to let a dog or cat freely roam around the car.
PETCO offers a variety of carriers and seat belt-type harnesses
to ensure a safe journey for you and your pet. And never
leave Buster unattended in a vehicle; heat can pose major
health risks.
If you are flying, the size of your pet may become a factor.
If your pet is small, it's best to keep them in a carrier
under the seat in front of you. Larger animals will have
to go below the cabin. If this is the case, inform the cabin
crew as they may take special precautions when they are
aware that an animal is on board. A direct flight will lessen
the stress on your pet.
Accommodations. If you plan to stay at a hotel, remember
that a number of chains-including Loews, Motel 6, and Red Roof
Inn-allow pets in their rooms. Make sure you call ahead to confirm
that Spot can stay with you, and to see if the hotel requires
an additional security deposit for your pet. If you are staying
at a house, be sure that the occupants know ahead of time that
you are bringing your pet. PETCO recommends that you get your
pet a temporary nametag with the phone number of the new location.
Above all, PETCO asks that you consider the stress and safety
of your pet. You can find travel-related information and products
in any PETCO store, or in the Travel Center at http://www.PETCO.com.
