September 15, 2004
Today the Governor of Pennyslvania, Edward G. Rendell, issued
a proclaimation naming today as Responsible Dog Ownership
Day.
The governor noted in his proclaimation of the need to educate
first-time dog owners about the responsibilities of dog ownership
and help current owners enhance their relationships with their
pets.
The event was marked by a visit from State Secretary of Agriculture,
Dennis Wolff to the Bucks County Society for the Prevention
of Cruelty to Animals in Lahaska.
"Owning a dog is a great American tradition but one that
carries with it great responsibility as well," Wolff said.
"Part of being a responsible dog owner is complying with all
of Pennsylvania's laws, which include licensing of all dogs
over the age of three months, and vaccinating all dogs for
rabies. State dog wardens working in the Department of Agriculture
are responsible for enforcing these laws."
The proclaimation also coincides with with the American Kennel
Club's Responsible Dog Ownership Day. Almost 450 events are
being held by AKC clubs and other pet-related organizations
throughout the month of September.
