The Associated Press reports that twenty-one dogs have been
poisoned, eight of which have died, after ingesting pieces
of food laden with poison. The tainted morsels were placed
by someone throughout areas in Idaho and Wyoming.
It's believed the intent is to kill off a growing population
of wolves, after cattle and sheep ranchers are seeing a rise
in wolf attacks. However, the efforts have resulted in the
poisoning of dogs that visit these areas with their owners.
Local authorities fear that babies and toddlers could accidentally
ingest poisoned bait.
Nearly a decade ago, the federal government reintroduced
wolves into Yellowstone National Park, while they were still
protected under the Endangered Species Act. The wolves population
numbers have grown at a fast rate, and have fueled the anger
of locals just as quickly.
Authorities are still trying to determine who is placing
the poisonous bait.
